An Appreciative Inquiry Approach to Community-Based Research for Development of a Social Enterprise

For over five years, Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (SEE), a community partnership in Northern Ontario, has been developing a supportive ecosystem for social enterprise, entrepreneurship, and innovation. This article sheds light on how the SEE partnership has established a broad spectrum of supports and a healthy ecosystem for alternative economies in a northern, rural, and Indigenous region, from an initial focus on youth, with asset mapping and pop-up events, to its current emphasis on regional networking and train-the-trainer programs for economic development officers. This article argues that the partnership’s strong emphasis on community engagement and empowerment, and the cyclical nature of the community-based research methodology has enhanced the sustainability of the ecosystem and leads to systemic social innovation and transformation.

Community-based research generally focuses on achieving benefits for both communities and researchers on a local, place-based scale. This case study profiles the six-year evolution of a community-based social enterprise sector survey across Canada. What started as a class project, and then a one-time study of two provinces, grew, over time, to become a pan-Canadian social enterprise sector survey. The evolution of the survey was led by social enterprise intermediary organizations within provinces who recognized the potential value of the initial survey in their own context. This case study demonstrates that with time and commitment, the core values of community-based research can be successfully scaled-up.

The aims of study is to describe combination of two big theory between Socialization model of tacit-tacit transfer knowledge and appreciative inquiry approach conceptually. This research idea comes to find better ways in tacit-tacit transfer of knowledge in knowledge management theory. This research is conceptual research and the limitation is about empirical study itself. The result of conceptual paper combine the process of tacit-tacit tansfer knowledge and appreciate inquiry in mental model, creative dialogue and develop mutual trust. Appreciative inquiry as a method to increase positive sense in tranfer knowlegde can be applied in tacit-tacit transfer knowledge phase in SECI Model.
