The impact of production operating parameters on mechanical and thermophysical characteristics of commercial wood pellets

The flow of crude oil, water, and gas from the reservoirs through the wellheads results in its deterioration. This deterioration which is due to the impact of turbulence, corrosion, and erosion significantly reduces the integrity of the wellheads. Effectively managing the wellheads, therefore, requires the knowledge of the extent to which these factors contribute to its degradation. In this paper, the contribution of some operating parameters (temperature, CO2 partial pressure, flow rate, and pH) on the corrosion rate of oil and gas wellheads was studied. Field data from onshore oil and gas fields were analysed with multiple linear regression model to determine the dependency of the corrosion rate on the operating parameters. ANOVA, value test, and multiple regression coefficients were used in the statistical analysis of the results, while in previous experimental results, de Waard-Milliams models and de Waard-Lotz model were used to validate the modelled wellhead corrosion rates. The study shows that the operating parameters contribute to about 26% of the wellhead corrosion rate. The predicted corrosion models also showed a good agreement with the field data and the de Waard-Lotz models but mixed results with the experimental results and the de Waard-Milliams models.

AbstractThe powder mixture of gum arabic and maltodextrin was produced by spray drying. The inlet air temperature of spray dryer was varied from 160 °C to 260 °C and the maltodextrin content was varied from 0 to 50 % in the feed solution with the concentration of 42.5 % (w/v) total solids by weight. The properties of the finished product were characterized to examine the impact of changes in these operating parameters. The results showed that: the inlet air temperature had a stronger influence on the properties of finished product than the MD/GA ratio, whereas the feed rate was more clearly affected by the MD/GA ratio. Two optimal parameters obtained include MD/GA ratio equal to 0.615 and the inlet air temperature of spray dryer Te = 258 °C.

ABSTRACT It is important for the poultry industry to maximize product safety and quality by understanding the connection between bacterial diversity on chicken carcasses throughout poultry processing to the end of shelf life and the impact of the local processing environment. Enumeration of total aerobic bacteria, Campylobacter and Pseudomonas, and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing were used to evaluate the processing line by collecting 10 carcasses from five processing steps: prescald, postplucker, pre- and post-immersion chill, and post-air chill. The diversity throughout a 12-day shelf life was also determined by examining 30 packaged carcasses. To identify the sources of possible contamination, scald water tank, immersion chilling water tank, air samples, and wall surfaces in the air-chill room were analyzed. Despite bacterial reductions on carcasses (>5 log10 CFU/ml) throughout the process, each step altered the bacterial diversity. Campylobacter was a minor but persistent component in the bacterial community on carcasses. The combination of scalding, defeathering, and plucking distributed thermophilic spore-forming Anoxybacillus to carcasses, which remained at a high abundance on carcasses throughout subsequent processes. Pseudomonas was not isolated from carcasses after air chilling but was abundant on the wall of the air-chill room and became the predominant taxon at the end of shelf life, suggesting possible contamination through air movement. The results suggest that attention is needed at each processing step, regardless of bacterial reductions on carcasses. Changing scalding water regularly, maintaining good hygiene practices during processing, and thorough disinfection at the end of each processing day are important to minimize bacterial transmission. IMPORTANCE Culture-based and culture-independent approaches were utilized to reveal bacterial community changes on chicken carcasses at different processing steps and potential routes from the local processing environment. Current commercial processing effectively reduced bacterial loads on carcasses. Poultry processes have similar processes across facilities, but various processing arrangements and operating parameters could impact the bacterial transmission and persistence on carcasses differently. This study showed the use of a single tunnel incorporating scalding, defeathering and plucking may undesirably distribute the thermoduric bacteria, e.g., Campylobacter and Anoxybacillus, between the local environment and carcasses, whereas this does not occur when these steps are separated. The length of immersion and air chilling also impacted bacterial diversity on carcasses. Air chilling can transfer Pseudomonas from wall surfaces onto carcasses; this may subsequently influence chicken product shelf life. This study helps poultry processors understand the impact of current commercial processing and improve the chicken product quality and safety.

This study examines the impact of projected land use changes in the context of growing production of industrial wood pellets coupled with expected changes in precipitation and temperature due to the changing climate on streamflow in a watershed located in the northeastern corner of the Oconee River Basin. We used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for ascertaining any changes in streamflow over time. The developed model was calibrated over a seven-year period (2001–2007) and validated over another seven-year period (2008–2014). Any changes in streamflow were simulated for a combination of 10 land use and climate change cases, from 2015 to 2028, under the two scenarios of High and Low Demand for industrial wood pellets. Our results suggest that streamflow is relatively stable (<1% change) for land use and temperature-related cases relative to the base case of no change in land use and climate. However, changes in precipitation by ±10% lead to considerable changes (±25%) in streamflow relative to the base case. Based on our results, expected changes in precipitation due to the changing climate will determine any changes in the streamflow, rather than projected land use changes in the context of rising demand for industrial wood pellets for export purposes in the selected watershed, keeping land under urban areas as constant. This study contributes to our broader understanding of the sustainability of the transatlantic industrial wood pellet trade; however, we suggest undertaking similar research at a larger spatial scale over a longer time horizon for understanding trade-offs across carbon, biodiversity, and water impacts of the transatlantic industrial wood pellet trade.

Abstract In order to better reflect the actual ecological performance of vehicles in traffic conditions, both the emission standards and the applied emission tests are being developed, for example by considering exhaust emissions for a cold engine start. This article presents the research results on the impact of ambient temperature during the cold start of a gasoline engine in road emission tests. The Real Driving Emissions (RDE) tests apply to passenger cars that meet the Euro 6 emissions norm and they are complementary to their type approval tests. A portable emissions measurement system was used to record the engine and vehicle operating parameters, as well as to measure the exhaust emissions during tests. This allowed for parameters such as engine load, engine speed and vehicle speed to be monitored. The cold start conditions for two different temperatures (8°C and 25°C) were compared in detail. Moreover, the engine operating parameters, exhaust concentration values and road emissions for the 300 s time interval, were compared. The summary of the article presents the share of a passenger car’s cold start phase for each exhaust compound in the urban part of the test and in the entire Real Driving Emissions test depending on the ambient temperature.

ChemCAD was applied to the simulation of distillation, and SCDS was used as a platform. to simulate distillation of benzene rectifying, obtaining the simulation result and the impact of operating parameters were analyzed to select the appropriate distillation conditions. Providing theoretical instructions for engineering design, and optimizing operations.
