Chitosan/ Polyethylene glycol and silver nanoparticles based antibacterial coating has been synthesized and applied to cotton cloth using sonochemical technique. In addition to the synthesis of nanoparticles using Pyrus seed extract (Green synthesis), Chitosan and PEG compound has also been used to develop the coating in this research. The coating obtained with this compound possesses good antibacterial properties and results. The study shows that the coated fabrics and silver nanoparticles show highly potent antibacterial activity towards gram negative and gram-positive bacteria. A comparison of coating with single and multiple components is studied; specifically, a comparison of pure chitosan and polyethylene glycol coating with their blend is studied. Agar plate test is performed against pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and the proposed process is helpful in healthcare industry and specified applications.

Transparent sol-gel film with antibacterial coating property incorporating silver nanoparticles has been successfully developed. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by precipitation method at room temperature. XRD structural studies show that crystallite sizes in the range of 18 nm to 40 nm were produced. The coating system used methyltrimethoxy silane as binder and N-propanol as diluent to obtain the highest transperancy. 2.5% wt of nanosilver crystallites was added as antibacterial agent. The coating mixture was applied onto glass plates using sponges and tested againstStaphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli, andPseudomonas aeruginosa. Values of antimicrobial activity of 4.6, 7.2, and 4.2 were, respectively, obtained forStaphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coliandPseudomonas Aeruginosa. Coating with antimicrobial activity greater than 2 classified as antibacterial.

The nuclear envelope is composed by an outer nuclear membrane and an inner nuclear membrane, which is underlain by the nuclear lamina that provides the nucleus with mechanical strength for maintaining structure and regulates chromatin organization for modulating gene expression and silencing. A layer of heterochromatin is beneath the nuclear lamina, attached by inner nuclear membrane integral proteins such as Lamin B receptor (LBR). LBR is a chimeric protein, having also a sterol reductase activity with which it contributes to cholesterol synthesis. Lukasova et al. showed that when DNA is damaged by ɣ-radiation in cancer cells, LBR is lost causing chromatin structure changes and promoting cellular senescence. Cellular senescence is characterized by terminal cell cycle arrest and the expression and secretion of various growth factors, cytokines, metalloproteinases, etc., collectively known as senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that cause chronic inflammation and tumor progression when they persist in the tissue. Therefore, it is fundamental to understand the molecular basis for senescence establishment, maintenance and the regulation of SASP. The work of Lukasova et al. contributed to our understanding of cellular senescence establishment and provided the basis that lead to the further discovery that chromatin changes caused by LBR reduction induce an up-regulated expression of SASP factors. LBR dysfunction has relevance in several diseases and possibly in physiological aging. The potential bifunctional role of LBR on cellular senescence establishment, namely its role in chromatin structure together with its enzymatic activity contributing to cholesterol synthesis, provide a new target to develop potential anti-aging therapies.

Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) fiber probe provides abundant interaction area between light and materials, permits detection within limited space and is especially useful for remote or in situ detection. A silver decorated SERS fiber optic probe was prepared by hydrothermal method. This method manages to accomplish the growth of silver nanoparticles and its adherence on fiber optic tip within one step, simplifying the synthetic procedure. The effects of reaction time on phase composition, surface plasmon resonance property and morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum (UV-VIS absorption spectrum) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that when reaction time is prolonged from 4–8 hours at 180 °C, crystals size and size distribution of silver nanoparticles increase. Furthermore, the morphology, crystal size and distribution density of silver nanoparticles evolve along with reaction time. A growth mechanism based on two factors, equilibrium between nucleation and growth, and the existence of PVP, is hypothesized. The SERS fiber probe can detect rhodamin 6G (R6G) at the concentration of 10−6 M. This SERS fiber probe exhibits promising potential in organic dye and pesticide residue detection.
