Attachment buffers against the association between childhood sexual abuse, depression, and substance use problems among transgender women: A moderated-mediation model

This study examined gender differences in a moderated-mediation model examining whether perceived social support moderated depressive symptom and academic achievement mediation pathways from peer victimization to substance use among 1,334 U.S. early adolescents (11-14 years, 50% girls, 51% White). Surveys were administered in schools at three 6-month intervals. Multiple group analyses suggested that the moderated-mediation model differed for boys and girls. Indirect effects suggested that declines in academic achievement mediated the relationship between peer victimization and substance use for girls and boys, while elevated depressive symptoms mediated this relationship for girls only. Higher family and friend support attenuated the relationship between overt victimization and academic achievement for boys and between relational victimization and depressive symptoms for girls. These findings implicate two risk pathways that account for why peer victimization enhances substance use risk and emphasize the importance of perceived support following peer victimization during early adolescence. Gender differences require replication.

Depression, substance use, and impulsivity have been linked to family violence exposure and to the development of violent offending during adolescence. Additionally, the indirect effects associated with these factors may not generalize across different racial/ethnic adolescent populations. The present study tested whether race/ethnicity moderated the mediated relationship between family violence exposure and violent offending, with depression, substance use, and impulsivity as mediators. A sample of 1,359 male adolescents was obtained from a juvenile correctional program. Between-racial/ethnic group comparisons were generally consistent with previous findings. The overall moderated mediation model was significant in predicting violence for both racial/ethnic groups. Different factors influenced violent offending among African Americans and European Americans in the tested model. Furthermore, race/ethnicity moderated the relationship between family violence exposure and impulsivity and substance use. Implications and future directions resolving issues are discussed concerning whether race/ethnicity should be included as a moderator in models of violence.

Although interparental conflict is a risk factor for adolescent problematic internet use (PIU), little research has investigated the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association from the perspective of "school × family" interplay. To address such gaps, this study tested the idea that interparental conflict might be associated with PIU in adolescents via restraining the protective effect of future positive time perspective and via boosting deleterious effect of future negative time perspective. In addition, this study also investigated the moderation effect of teacher-student relationship in the association between interparental conflict and future time perspective. Using three-wave longitudinal data, with each time point spanning three months apart, this study examined the aforesaid questions in a sample of 523 Chinese adolescents (M age = 14.64, SD = 1.37; 276 boys and 247 girls). Results of moderated mediation model indicated that interparental conflict at T1 was associated with PIU at T3 in adolescents through future negative time perspective at T2, especially for adolescents with a great teacher-student relationship. These findings shed light on the underlying mechanisms that explain how interparental conflict is associated with PIU in adolescents and provide effective prevention and intervention strategies of PIU in a Chinese cultural context
