Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use a combination of numerical simulation and experiment to evaluate the performance of laser surface texturing (LST) in the field of gear lubrication, and to more accurately predict the lubrication characteristics of different surfaces. Design/methodology/approach The method used in this paper is developed on the basis of the deterministic solution of the three-dimensional (3D) mixed elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model and the model parameters are corrected by friction test. The film pressure, film thickness and friction coefficient of different micro-textured tooth surfaces are predicted on the basis of accurate 3D mixed EHL models. Findings The results demonstrate that the micro-texture structure of the tooth surface can increase the local film thickness and enhance the lubricating performance of the tooth surface without drastically reducing the contact fatigue life. The stress distribution and friction characteristics of the tooth surface can be optimized by adjusting the micro-texture arrangement and the size of the micro-textures. Originality/value A new evaluation method using a 3D hybrid EHL model and friction test to predict the lubrication characteristics of LST is proposed, which can effectively improve the processing economy and save time. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an adjustable oil film thickness test rig for detecting lubrication characteristics of the slipper. The mathematical analysis of lubrication is introduced. Based on the results from the test rig, the results comparison from test rig and mathematical analysis is carried out. Design/methodology/approach This paper introduces a mechanism which can adjust the oil film thickness between the slipper and swash-plate. Feasibility is ensured, and the accuracy of test rig is guaranteed by the three-coordinate measuring machine. Three displacement sensors show the oil film thickness and its shape. The reacting force and torque resulting from oil film can be achieved by three S-type force sensors and a torque sensor, respectively. Findings The relative error of the reacting force is small. The relative error reduces and is acceptable when the deformation of retainer is taken into account. The thickness and tilt angle of oil film have less effect on the reacting force. However, they are significantly impact on torque. Originality/value The test rig proposed in this paper is able to adjust the oil film thickness, which is used to detecting the lubrication characteristics in pump design. Purpose This study aims to uncover the influencing mechanism of the tilt angles of the cage pocket walls of the high-speed cylindrical roller bearing on the bearing skidding. Design/methodology/approach A novel cylindrical roller bearing with the beveled cage pockets was proposed. Using the Hertz contact theory and the elastohydrodynamic and hydrodynamic lubrication formulas, the contact models of the bearing were built. Using the multibody kinematics and the Newton–Euler dynamics theory, a dynamics model of the bearing was established. Using the Runge–Kutta integration method, the dynamics simulations and analysis of the bearing were performed. Findings The simulation results show that the effects of the tilt angles of the front and rear walls of the pocket on the bearing skidding are remarkable. Under a 5° tilt angle of the front wall of the pocket and a 10° tilt angle of the rear wall, the bearing skidding can be effectively decreased in the rotational speed range of 10,000-70,000 r/min. Originality/value In this paper, a novel cylindrical roller bearing with the beveled cage pockets was proposed; a dynamics model of the bearing was established; the influence mechanism of the tilt angles of the front and rear walls of the pocket on the bearing skidding was investigated, which can provide fundamental theory basis for optimizing the pocket. Purpose This paper aims to experimentally investigate the film-forming capability of base oils containing poly-methacrylate (PMA) and poly-isobutene (PIB), in a point contact under pure rolling. Design/methodology/approach By using the relative light intensity method, the film thickness is calculated from the interferometer images which are captured by multiple-contact optical elastohydrodynamic lubricated test rig. Findings The test results reveal that polymers, both PMA and PIB, have a significant contribution to the film-forming capability of base oils and the film thickness increases with concentration. The forming-film capabilities for PMA and PIB in base oils are similar at low concentration, while PIB gives a higher film thickness than PMA at high concentration. Shear-thinning phenomenon are observed in all polymer-based oils. Originality/value The polymer usually as an additive is added into the low viscosity base oils to improve the properties of lubricant oil. This paper reports the lubricated properties of PMA and PIB with different concentrations in base oils and to evaluate their functional mechanism in a point contact. Purpose This paper aims to study the influence of the dimension change of bush-pin on the pressure, oil film thickness, temperature rise and traction coefficient in contact zone by using a thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model for finite line contact. Concretely, the effects of the equivalent curvature radius of the bush and the pin, and the length of the bush are investigated. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the contact between the bush and pin is simplified as finite line contact. The lubrication state is studied by numerical simulation using steady-state line contact thermal EHL. A constitutive equation Ree–Eyring fluid is used in the calculations. Findings It is found that by selecting an optimal equivalent radius of curvature and prolonging the bush length can improve the lubrication state effectively. Originality/value Under specific working conditions, there exists an optimal equivalent radius to maximize the minimum oil film thickness in the contact zone. The increase of generatrix length will weaken the stress concentration effect in the rounded corner area at both ends of the bush, which can improve the wear resistance of chain. Purpose This paper aims to explore the possibility of converting the nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) water-lubricated bearing material into a self-lubricating bearing material by the action of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles and water lubrication. Design/methodology/approach A group of experimental studies was carried out on a ring-on-block friction test. The physical properties, tribological properties and interface structure of PTFE-NBR self-lubricating composites filled with different percentages of PTFE particles were investigated. Findings The experimental results indicated that the reduction in friction and wear is a result of the formation of the lubricating film on the surface of the composites. The lubricating film was formed of a large amount of PTFE particles continuously supplied under water lubrication conditions and the PTFE particles here can greatly enhance the load capacity and lubrication performance. Originality/value In this study, the tribological properties of PTFE particles added to the NBR water-lubricated bearing materials under water lubrication were investigated experimentally, and the research was carried out by a ring-on-block friction test. It is believed that this study can provide some guidance for the application of PTFE-NBR self-lubricating. Applying elastic-hydrodynamic lubrication theory, oil film thickness of tooth surface was studies in accordance with the quasi-steady state. This paper focused on the influence of gear parameters such as gear ratio, module and center distance on the thickness of oil film of tooth flank. The results show, as speed ratio increases, oil film thickness increases significantly. When the number of teeth is fixed, oil film thickness increases significantly with the increase of module. When center distance is fixed, oil film thickness declines greatly with the increase of module in both into meshing and out of meshing points. Therefore when center distance is fixed, less module and more teeth are selected,on the condition that gear intensity is met. By results analyzing, the minimal oil film thickness may occur in the single tooth meshing area and into meshing or out of meshing points.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the characteristics of gas foil conical bearings (GFCBs) considering the misalignment, the static and dynamic performances with different misalignment cases were studied. Design/methodology/approach A test rig on the air compressor supported by GFCBs has been developed to measure the practicability. A nonlinear bump stiffness model and one-dimensional beam top foil stiffness model were used as a basis for the calculation of static and dynamic performance. The finite element method and finite difference method are adopted to solve the Reynolds equation and the film thickness equation coupled, in which different misalignment cases were considered by changing the film thickness. Findings The supporting performance of GFCB is excellent, and the film clearance plays a critical role. The misalignment effects depend on the assembled angle and the misalignment angle. The load capacity, friction torque, temperature of GFCB decrease when the misalignment assembled angle is between 120° and 240°, while the dynamic bearing stability is improved. The static and dynamic performances show the opposite law for the other assembled angles, and the misalignment effect is more dramatic when there is a larger misalignment angle. Moreover, the bearing and running parameters largely affect the bearing performance. Originality/value The present study focuses on the static and dynamic characteristics of GFCB and investigates the effects of misalignment on the bearing performance. Purpose The analysis of lubricating properties and efficiency is important for aviation high-speed gear. So far, the project of lubricating properties and efficiency are processing under the condition of a given lubricating state, which is still depending on practical experience. This paper aims to mostly focus on the analysis of given lubricating state but lost sight of the relevance of lubrication parameters and lubricating state, which not only makes the analysis of aviation high-speed gear transmission and efficiency fail to trace to practical situation but also has an adverse effect on the reliance and validity of the project. Design/methodology/approach Based on this, the numerical model of spraying oil and oil film spreading is established, and the quantitative relationship between spray lubrication parameters and spreading characteristics of oil film is studied. According to the geometric and mechanical conditions of meshing points and taking the influence of rich-oil/starved-oil lubrication and roughness of teeth surface into consideration, corrected film thickness under condition of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication and lubricating state of mesh points are analyzed. On this basis, power consumption and efficiency of gear transmission are also calculated by figuring out the solid friction and oil friction separately. Findings Through the research of this thesis, the effect of friction power consumption and efficiency with lubrication parameters is discussed. The effect of lubrication parameters on friction power consumption and efficiency of gear is complex. With the increase of spreading film thickness and film length, the frictional power consumption is less and the efficiency is higher. Originality/value This work provides a systematic technological approach to lubrication design and efficiency calculation of aviation high-speed gear transmission, which has remarkable engineering significance for the accurate lubrication design of the aviation mechanical parts.
