Lithuania probe hurts China's high-end phone market

Significance Notably, the report suggests censorship in China may be increasingly hardware-based, triggering international concerns about Chinese-made phones. Lithuania's defence ministry has called on citizens to stop purchasing Chinese smartphones and, if possible, to dispose of those they already own. Impacts The Chinese-language nature of the report’s findings may cause a greater spotlight on diaspora communities in Europe. Other Chinese smartphones will likely face similar scrutiny as governments try to gauge the prevalence of the censorship hardware. The Xiaomi story will feed growing distrust of Chinese hardware and software services, especially in advanced markets.

Purpose Despite the importance of the first Chinese language movement in the early 1970s that elevated the status of Chinese as an official language in British Hong Kong, the movement and the colonial state’s response remained under-explored. Drawing insights primarily from Bourdieu and Phillipson, this study aims to revisit the rationale and process of the colonial state’s incorporation of the Chinese language amid the 1970s. Design/methodology/approach This is a historical case study based on published news and declassified governmental documents. Findings The central tenet is that the colonial state’s cultural incorporation was the tactics that aimed to undermine the nationalistic appeal in Hong Kong society meanwhile contain the Chinese language movement from turning into political unrest. Incorporating the Chinese language into the official language regime, however, did not alter the pro-English linguistic hierarchy. Symbolic domination still prevailed as English was still considered as the more economically rewarding language comparing with Chinese, yet official recognition of Chinese language created a common linguistic ground amongst the Hong Kong Chinese and fostered a sense of local identity that based upon the use of the mother tongue, Cantonese. From the case of Hong Kong, it suggests that Bourdieu’s conceptualisation of state formation paid insufficient attention to the international context and the non-symbolic process of state-making itself could also shape the degree of the state’s symbolic power. Originality/value Extant studies on the Chinese language movement are overwhelmingly movement centred, this paper instead brings the colonial state back in so to re-examine the role of the state in the incorporative process of the Chinese language in Hong Kong.

Purpose – The information technology (IT) sector in India is the leading exporter from the service sector domain and also is a significant contributor to the overall export kitty of India. The IT sector’s contribution in total Indian exports (merchandise plus services) increased from less than 4 percent in FY1998-1999 to about 25 percent in FY2011-2012 as per IT industry nodal body National Association of Software and Services Companies and the central bank of the country, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). As this industry earns most of its revenue in foreign currencies it is exposed to the foreign exchange risks. The purpose of this paper is to validate the macro-economic theory that depreciation in domestic currency boosts export as it makes domestic good and services cheaper and appreciation in domestic currency deters export as it makes domestic good and services costlier. The authors are validating this theory for Indian rupee and keeping software services export in the focus. Design/methodology/approach – In this study the authors have done the multiple regression analysis on the obtained time-series data. The research was totally based on the secondary data from Quarter1 (April-June) of FY 2000-2001 to Quarter4 (January-March) of FY 2011-2012. It comprises of data for 48 consecutive quarters. The authors have taken the growth rate, so the final data set consist of data of 47 quarters. The main source of data are published data by RBI. Data have been collected for export of software services, merchandise export, real effective exchange rate, US-dollar-Indian rupee exchange rate, gross domestic product of India and selected countries. Findings – Data analysis leads the authors to the following findings: real effective exchange rate has no significant impact on software services export; US-dollar-Indian rupee exchange rate has no significant impact on software services export; external gross domestic product growth has no significant impact on software services export; and gross domestic product growth of India has no significant impact on software services export. The results obtained from multiple regression analysis are also supported by the results obtained from Granger Causality test. It does not identify any single factor as a major cause of software export. Results shows that the external GDP is having the statistically significant impact on the software export but the low value of R2 denotes that the impact is very low. Originality/value – There are no published studies available which has attempted similar kind of an approach to study using aggregated export data and other macro-economic variables like real effective exchange rate (REER) and GDP growth rate. All previous literatures used REER to measure the impact of the exchange rate on export.


Significance Not only has the range of software services provided widened, but a host of other services are being delivered remotely and in person through digital platforms to Indian consumers. This diversification is changing the working conditions of India’s burgeoning digital economy workforce. Impacts Wages in the digital gig economy will fall as more workers enter this segment. Platform work in unskilled areas such as food delivery will lower India’s long-term skills base. Gender gaps in the digital economy will persist given the lack of policy correctives.

PurposeThis review study focuses on the framework for pre-primary education and language acquisition for non-Chinese-speaking students (NCS students) from ethnic minority families (EM families) in Hong Kong.Design/methodology/approachThis paper adopts a multidisciplinary perspective that involves both assessing the broader governing framework and researching their specific needs. In its overview of the significant changes made in recent years and an exploration of the gaps in the framework, with reference to other jurisdictions, along with input from developmental psychology as it relates to the issues faced by NCS students.FindingsThis study contributes to the literature on how to shape further policies and reforms to optimize learning of NCS children in Hong Kong from a young age. This helps NCS students and families achieve their right to education and equal opportunities and schools to cater the needs of these students and families, which is essential to providing an enriched learning environment for our children regardless of their ethnicity.Originality/valueThis study uses multidisciplinary approach to study pre-primary education and Chinese language acquisition of ethnic minority students in Hong Kong.

PurposeThis paper investigates the effectiveness of metacognitive teaching methods on students' reading comprehension through a lesson study case conducted in Shanghai.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts an experimental design with control groups and experimental groups. Plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycles of lesson study were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of modeling, self-questioning, think aloud and KWL strategy in Chinese language lessons. Metacognitive teaching strategies were implemented at a junior high school in Shanghai. The data was collected via lesson observation, interviews and pre- and posttests.FindingsResults identified a significant difference between the incremental scores of students' reading comprehension in the experimental group and control group. The findings from the lesson observation showed that metacognitive teaching strategies in Chinese language developed students' reading comprehension. Moreover, PDCA cycles of lesson study helped the teachers improve metacognitive teaching strategies.Originality/valueFew studies have been conducted to validate metacognitive teaching through lesson study in the context of China schools, and this study contributes to a new research dimension of lesson study on developing pedagogical practices to improve student learning outcomes.

Purpose Since China’s “opening-up” in the late 1970s, Singapore has played a major role in enhancing China’s engagement with the world, especially in economic terms. This traditional relationship is well manifested in the third government-to-government (G–G) project under the BRI, which is known as the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative (CCI). The purpose of this paper is to address the following question: despite Singapore’s initial reluctance to agree on a third G–G project with China, why did Singapore eventually decide to join the CCI? Design/methodology/approach This paper draws on archives of over 700 Chinese language media reports and over 400 English language media reports, as well as private interactions with scholars interested in Sino-Singapore relations and with both sides’ officials in charge of the CCI project. Findings The paper finds that it is the goal of connecting the region, along with the need to maintain Singapore’s relevance to China and the regional economy that led to Singapore’s participation in the third G–G project. This paper also uses this case to analyse the changes that are taking place in the bilateral economic relations. Originality/value Despite wide media coverage, op-ed commentaries and respective government statements, there are a limited number of academic studies on the rationale of the third G–G project and contemporary Sino-Singapore relations in the literature. The scholarship has not addressed the rationale for Singapore’s changing attitude towards CCI and the manner in which the CCI has improved cooperation (or upgraded cooperation to a broader and regional level).

Purpose This paper highlights the role of an individual’s early life experiences (formative years’ experiences) in the learning and development (L&D) journey of their careers. Hence, it is useful for the individual managers as well as organizations to better understand and improve the effectiveness of their L&D processes. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws insights from a small subset of the data collected as a part of a larger study on leadership development processes in the context of medium-sized rapid growth organizations in the Indian software services industry. Findings The respondents, i.e. senior managers in the software services firms, shared some of their experiences in their formative years (family/school/university/career) which they felt had a huge impact on the way their careers had shaped up. These stories spanned across diverse experiences like values instilled in childhood by parents/grandparents, influence of schoolteachers, friends and peers during growth years, academic performance during college/university days, and successful or positive experiences during early career years. Originality/value The paper can be useful to managers in their career development, as well as to organizations in making their L&D processes more effective. It provides a more nuanced understanding of how the experiences in formative years can help improve one’s development and performance in organizations; while the organizations allow, and create, conducive environment for the managers to harness these experiences gained early in life.

Purpose The shortage of Chinese language teachers have been identified as a pressing issue globally. This paper aims to respond to the needs by investigating and designing the learning innovation with autonomous programmable robot, NAO. Design/methodology/approach By thoughtfully embedding NAO robot into teaching basic Chinese language, this research demonstrates an inquiry qualitative case study of artificial intelligence design principles and learning engagement with rule-based reasoning and progress test design. Findings This state-of-the arts robot use its emotion recognition and body language automated (LED eye with various colours) to demonstrate the Chinese words, to increase learners’ understanding and enhance their memory of the words learned. The responses conclude that the novel learning experience is more fun and interesting, thus the engagement from the axis of novelty, interactivity, motivation and interest is enhanced. Research limitations/implications It is recognised that the number of research participants was small, but the qualitative finding demonstrate key issues and recommendation that may inspire future empirical research. Practical implications Today, robotics is a rapidly growing field and has received significant attention in education. Humanoid robots are now increasingly used in fields such as education, hospitality, entertainment and health care. Educational robots are anticipated to serve as teaching assistants. Originality/value The learning engagement paradigm has shifted from manual engagement to personal response systems or mixed-reality on mobile platforms, and now with the humanoid robot, the recommendation of four principles and future work and for designing humanoid robot as a language tutor are discussed. The educational robot model can be changed to a newer robot such as CANBOT U05E.

Purpose This paper aims to recommend an approach which can help ensure the fast-track career progression of employees. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses data from a larger study on leadership development practices in the context of rapid growth organizations. This was based on semi-structured interviews with 43 senior managers from medium-sized organizations in the Indian software services industry. Findings The study suggests that many respondents, who were from a pool of fast-track employees, had experienced some kind of success early on in their careers or particular roles. This was due to various reasons such as exciting opportunities, proximity to top management, a supportive boss, or challenging assignments. Originality/value The paper can be of immense help to organizations by helping them to plan their induction and onboarding activities more effectively, so as to provide new recruits with early success experience of some sort, which in turn will help them to fast-track their career growth.

PurposeThe paper aims to focus on the “Window of Shanghai”, a cooperative program initiated by Shanghai Library that aims to connect people and promote understanding, by the donation of new books published in China to foreign libraries, especially those that are functioning as the major local information gateway for people of various communities and/or with different cultural origins.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is a review of the program.FindingsThe paper shows that the purpose of the program, to cooperate with overseas partners – public libraries and other information institutions – to introduce and spread Chinese language and culture through the donation of Chinese domestic publications, has provided opportunities and future challenges. The program has helped Chinese migrants around the world to be better understood and identified, and has contributed to aiding the continuation of their languages, customs and traditions in subsequent generations.Originality/valueThe paper provides information on a program that is helping to spread Chinese language and culture.
