The mechanism by which fever and influenza-like symptoms occur, after the administration of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) to patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, was investigated. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells, obtained from two patients with fever and/or influenza-like symptoms related to the administration of rHuEPO for the treatment of anaemia were cultured with or without rHuEPO (100, 200, and 300 U/ml). Production of interleukin-1 β and tumour necrosis factor-α was higher in cultures with rHuEPO than in cultures without rHuEPO, although the dose relationships were not clear. These findings suggest that increased production of interleukin-1 β and tumour necrosis factor-α, induced by administration of rHuEPO, may cause fever and influenza-like smptoms.

Spontaneous regression of hepatocellular carcinoma is a rare phenomenon. Abscopal regression of tumours resulting from the effect of irradiation of a tissue on a remote non-irradiated tissue is also rare. The case of a 76 year old Japanese man with hepatocellular carcinoma that regressed after radiotherapy for thoracic vertebral bone metastasis is described. Serum levels of tumour necrosis factor-α increased after radiotherapy. The findings suggests that such abscopal related regression may be associated with host immune response, involving cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor-α.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between leptin and cytokines in depressed patients. Methods: Thirty-three unmedicated patients (24 female, nine male) with depressive disorder and 23 healthy controls (16 female, seven male) were assessed for serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and leptin. Results: Levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in depressed patients were higher than in normal controls. There were significantly lower leptin levels in depressed patients than in normal controls. There were also significant differences in the leptin levels, being higher in female than in male patients, and in female than in male controls. Conclusions: IL-6 and TNF-α cytokines and leptin are important in the psychoimmunology of depressed patients. There were gender differences in leptin levels in depression.
