Generalisation is a key feature of learning algebra, requiring all four proficiency strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (AC:M): Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. From a review of the literature, we propose a learning progression for algebraic generalisation consisting of five levels. Our learning progression is then elaborated and validated by reference to a large range of assessment tasks acquired from a previous project Reframing Mathematical Futures II (RMFII). In the RMFII project, Rasch modelling of the responses of over 5000 high school students (Years 7–10) to algebra tasks led to the development of a Learning Progression for Algebraic Reasoning (LPAR). Our learning progression in generalisation is more specific than the LPAR, more coherent regarding algebraic generalisation, and enabling teachers to locate students’ performances within the progression and to target their teaching. In addition, a selection of appropriate teaching resources and marking rubrics used in the RMFII project is provided for each level of the learning progression.

The likelihood that learned skills will be maintained in natural performance settings may be affected by the number of opportunities to perform the skills following acquisition. To examine this hypothesis, 17 high school students with moderate to severe mental retardation were selected from three public school classrooms. Each student had learned one adaptive skill that he or she had performed at least twice per month without additional training for 5 months prior to this study (high opportunity). Each student had also learned one adaptive skill that he or she had not performed more often than once per month over the 5 months immediately preceding the study (low opportunity). Performance of both behaviors was probed under conditions as similar as possible to those experienced during training. Twelve of the 17 high opportunity skills were performed successfully while only 4 of the 17 low opportunity skills were completed. A sign test indicated these differences to be statistically significant. Implications of the results for selection of IEP goals and the inclusion of “opportunity” objectives are discussed.

This is a study of high school students’ attitudes toward the English language in Lebanon. The purpose of this research is to assess the extent of use of English inside and outside the schools taking into consideration the attitude towards the language. Two schools were selected, one upper middle class and one lower middle class. This selection of different social classes aims at finding whether a student’s socio- economical background affects his/ her attitude toward the English language. The sample of respondents returned 52 questionnaires from the two schools. Although this sample was a modest one, it highlighted the differences in attitudes towards the English language, but these attitudes did not relate much to the socioeconomic class as much as personal preferences. However, what was salient in this research is how students from the lower middle class were more inclined to use English to raise their social status and both groups agreed that English is essential to their progress in life.

Anak Pelangi Indonesia (API) Foundation is a non-profit foundation that offers scholarship programs for elementary, middle and high school students. This institute is supported by donaturs who give contribution to the Foundation. The donation is processed to be a cost that is used to pay Sumbangan Pembinaan Pendidikan (SPP) or Education Development Donation of each student. Currently, the provision of monthly donor fund is at uncertain amount so that the Foundation needs to determine the students of whom SPP will be firstly paid. However, the funding needs of each student are different due to the different amount of SPP and a giving fine from the school for the tardiness in paying the tuition. From these matters, the Foundation finds it difficult in deciding which students whose the tuition will be paid first. The solution to this problem is to use the four criteria referring to the tuition payment, namely the difference of pay date, fine, rank, and the amount of payment. The four criteria is then given the same integrity which is 25% for each criteria and counted by using Weighted Product (WP) method. The result of this research is an information system to the selection of scholarship payment using Weight Product method that takes the biggest value from the calculation result as a reference in deciding which students of whom SPP will be initially paid in accordance with the current fund condition.

Elimination of Negative Character Features as an Element of Building a Positive Image of Physical Education TeacherIntroduction. In the era of the development of a number of ways and forms of communication, positive image has become an important medium of information, including teacher-student relationships. One can now recognize it as one of the elements of effective implementation of the mandates of teaching and upbringing. The aim of this study was to determine what physical education teacher's features are most undesirable for senior high school students, and thus negatively affect his image. Material and methods. The study used the method of diagnostic survey, in which the questionnaire technique was used. The data obtained from 763 students of two senior high schools (484 females and 279 males) was analyzed. For statistical evaluation of the data the log-linear analysis method was used. Results.Quick temper and severity were found to be the features that the students found to be most undesirable in the physical education teacher. The choice of such features as: compliant, indulgent, moody and quick tempered was significantly dependent on gender (p<0.05), and such as strict, hesitant and distracted, significantly depended on both gender and grade (p<0.05). The school turned out to be a variable that did not differentiate significantly choices made by students. None of the independent variables conditioned the selection of such features as passive and unreliable. Conclusions. Knowing what features should not characterize a physical education teacher is one of the important elements that should be taken into account in the process of building a positive image of teachers. It can be assumed that the elimination or restriction of the expression of these features contributes significantly to the positive perception of teachers, and it is followed by improved relations with students and increased effectiveness of teaching and educational interactions.

Various types of educational devices that are used as a support for the creation of a good education are certainly important. One of them is using an effective method to provide a concept to students optimally. This study aims to analyze how high and important the influence of the experimental method on science subjects at the junior high school. The method used is a qualitative research method with a mini survey method on 47 samples consisting of junior high school students, high school students, college students, and alumni students as well as a literature study method (library study) which is carried out by screening electronic books (e-books) and e- journals. The results showed that 94% of experimental research methods were effectively used and 6% were not effectively used in the science learning process. The effectiveness of this method is that students can prove that an accepted concept is in accordance with the given theory and students can hone their psychomotor abilities. The weakness of this method is that it can be seen from the inadequate infrastructure, the ability of teachers, controlling students, and the selection of practicum materials.

A representação do espaço é um elemento essencial para a ciência geográfica, no entanto, no que se refere à geografia escolar, encontramos certa dificuldade dos professores com o uso de elementos cartográficos nas aulas de geografia, fato que pode ser consequência da formação inicial que, muitas vezes, enfatiza a cartografia básica, dando pouca atenção à cartografia escolar. Procurando superar esta dificuldade, um grupo de acadêmicos bolsistas de Iniciação à Docência optou por desenvolver uma oficina de maquete com alunos do ensino médio de uma escola estadual. O objetivo era proporcionar a construção de conhecimentos cartográficos partindo da atividade prática (construção da maquete) para compreender a teoria, em um movimento de problematização, estimulando assim a aprendizagem. A atividade possibilitou um aprofundamento metodológico para os bolsistas de Iniciação à Docência, pois eles realizaram a mediação do processo ensino-aprendizagem, que resultou em um avanço, por partes dos alunos da educação básica, no processo de leitura e interpretação de cartas topográficas e das análises da representação do espaço bidimensional e tridimensional, além de resultar em uma valorização da geografia escolar pelos alunos que participaram da atividade, pois conseguiram entender esta disciplina como um instrumento para o entendimento da realidade. Maquete. MODEL WORKSHOP: the search of an enhancement of teaching/learning process ABSTRACT The representation of space is an essential element to geographic science, however when its refers to school geography, teachers confront a certain difficulty using cartographies elements on geographic classes, this can be caused by teacher initial education which sometimes emphasize basic cartography on the other hand giving less attention to scholar cartography. In order to overcome this difficulty a scholarship holders group of initial teaching took the initiative of developing a model workshop with high school students from a public state school. The aim was to provide the construction of cartographic knowledge through practice activity (construction of models) to comprehend the theory, in a problematization movement thus stimulating learning. The activity has allowed a methodological enhancement to initiation scholarship holders to teaching, as they carried out the teaching-learning process measurement that resulted in a breakthrough, by the basic education students, in the process of reading and interpreting topographic maps and analysis bi-dimensional and tri-dimensional space representation and also resulted in a valorization of scholar geography by students which took part of activity since they understood this discipline as an instrument for understanding of reality KEYWORDS Geography. This research considered students’ abilities to read images about dispersed systems, taken from the chemistry textbook. 103 high school students (37 males, 63 females, and 3 unknown) from the school “Svetozar Marković“ in Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia, were included as the research participants. Students’ abilities to suggest the titles of the realistic, conventional, and hybrid textbook images about dispersed systems, as well as their written interpretations of images contents, were examined. The collected data were analysed qualitatively, and information about students’ conceptual understandings and misunderstandings about selected chemistry topic was provided. Identified misunderstandings, some of which are the contribution of this research, gave significant results. Additionally, it was concluded that the majority of students’ difficulties were related to reading realistic textbook images. Students relied on what they literally saw in the photography without making proper connections with chemical contents about dispersed systems. The findings of the present research could be helpful for science teachers and educators, interested in how and why students use textbook images to learn science concepts. They will also alert authors and textbook illustrators to pay more attention to the selection of appropriate textbook images. To do well in school and for enhanced academic success, effective Learning and Study strategies are important. The objectives of this research work were to determine gender differences, if any, in Learning and Study strategies in high school students and to find the relationship between these strategies and Academic achievement. To do this, Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) - Weinstein & Palmer, (2002) was administered to a group of 684, 8th std., school students, of which 363 were boys and 321 were girls. These students were selected from private schools of Bangalore; all the 4 zones – north, south, east, and west - were represented. All the students chosen were studying the state syllabus. The results of the research indicate gender differences in the following strategies – processing of information, motivation and selection of main ideas. No gender differences emerged for Academic achievement. Further, academic achievement was found to be significantly related to levels of anxiety, attitude, concentration ability, selection of main ideas, effective time management and test taking strategies.Keywords: Learning strategies, Study strategies, Academic Achievement, Gender difference.

The paper offers a few activities for high school students which use the magnetometer of a smartphone to measure the value of magnetic fields. The first part of the paper deals with finding the magnetometer of the used smartphone. Following is the first selection of activities which are focused on discovering the equation for measuring the magnetic field of coil with a negligible length, while the second selection of activities use the discovered equation to measure the permeability of vacuum and finally to measure the magnetic field of the earth. Sample results of the experiments are given, showing the accuracy and effectiveness of the conducted experiments. The activities offer teachers a novel way for teaching the equation for calculating the magnetic field of a coil, as well as measuring the permeability of vacuum in a classroom environment.

Schools generally prepare class XII students to continue their studies at the higher education level, both official and non-official, this is done because almost 90% more high school students choose to continue their studies in higher education. In general, students take two selection courses at tertiary institutions, namely the national selection of state tertiary institutions (SNMPTN) and the joint selection of state tertiary institutions (SBMPTN). Both of these selections require intense preparation and guidance by the school conducted by the homeroom teacher and tutor. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the optimization of career services can improve the success of students who are accepted into state universities. This study uses qualitative methods, namely research procedures that produce descriptive data in the form of written or oral words from people or observable behavior. The study was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Sidoarjo. In this study the source of the data obtained from interviews and observations to counseling guidance teachers, vice principals in the field of student affairs, public relations and school principals. Research data uses alumni data from Muhammadiyah 2 Sidoarjo High School from the 2015-2016 academic year until 2019 - 2020. Guidance and counseling have a very important role in helping the achievement of national education goals, and helping students achieve maximum potential development, independence in their lives, and decision making and choices to create a productive, prosperous and caring public welfare life.
