Arts Learning Across a City: How Ecosystem Thinking Helps Shape Understanding of Black-Centered and Eurocentric Arts Programming

Given historical patterns of unequal access to arts education, we used an ecosystem perspective to investigate Black Centered Arts and Eurocentric Arts in a mid-sized U.S. city, with a focus on youth programs, museums, and other youth arts organizations. We found that practitioner-leaders valued arts quality, equitable access, community embeddedness, and cultural preservation. Programs that provided access to Eurocentric arts tended to be older, larger, and better funded, and network analysis revealed a subnetwork made up largely of Black Centered Arts organizations. Results will inform an ongoing research-practice-philanthropy partnership structured to develop a more equitable city-wide arts ecosystem.

An increasing number of creative artists, arts organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are working on socially-engaged initiatives that aim to bring about positive change in communities. Examples of outstanding arts practices can be found throughout the world; however, there are major gaps in our understanding about how this work operates. Drawing on insights from 100 Australian arts organizations and NGOs working in this field, this article aims to address some of these gaps. It outlines a typology of change agendas in these organizations, in order to advance a deeper understanding of this field and inform future research, practice and policy.

Social injustice and intercultural tensions are often bound up with conflicts that create intolerances: conflicts of memory, conflicts of value, and conflicts of cultural stereotyping, which serve to demarcate one group from the alien “other.” Raising awareness through research needs to position academics, researchers, non-academics, and arts organizations as collaborative partners for deliberating about and developing intercultural translation; this requires dialogue, exchange, and co-construction. What forms the core of this chapter, then, are findings of ongoing research, presented as a layered story interlocking elements in theory and practice relating to how different types of creativities are recognized and communicated in the diverse practices of a particular organization, Musicians without Borders, whose projects work with the power of music to connect communities. This chapter presents an exploration of the empathic and intercultural creativities that emerge in the songwriting and improvisational practices of musical creativities, empathy, interculturality, practices, improvisation, and songwriting.

Partnerships between researchers and stakeholders offer an opportunity to bring scientific and practice-based knowledge and experience together to improve the quality, value, and relevance of implementation science efforts and increase the application of findings. The chapter covers (1) a continuum of engagement for research–practice partnerships, including the benefits and challenges of engaged implementation science; (2) challenges and opportunities for partnerships in implementation science in community, policy, public opinion, and public–private partnership domains; (3) implementation science partnership evaluation, with an emphasis on social network analysis; and (4) a series of questions for the field as increasing attention is paid to partnerships for implementation science.

This study examines the historical establishment and shifting residential access to city parks over time. It begins by engaging and extending a theory of urbanization as socioenvironmental succession. It then assembles and analyzes longitudinal data on city park creation and neighborhood change in Houston from 1947 to 2015. Results reveal how socially privileged residents have long enjoyed unequal access to city parks as well as strong influence over where new ones are established. At the same time, growing minority populations have managed to gain more equitable access not by having new parks come to them so much as by moving into neighborhoods where Whites once lived. These dynamics obscure past processes and patterns of inequality while allowing newer, unexpected ones to emerge. We conclude with a discussion of what these findings imply for understanding not just unequal access to city parks but broader processes of urbanization.

Abstract Objective To survey network analyses of datasets collected in the course of routine operations in health care settings and identify driving questions, methods, needs, and potential for future research. Materials and Methods A search strategy was designed to find studies that applied network analysis to routinely collected health care datasets and was adapted to 3 bibliographic databases. The results were grouped according to a thematic analysis of their settings, objectives, data, and methods. Each group received a methodological synthesis. Results The search found 189 distinct studies reported before August 2016. We manually partitioned the sample into 4 groups, which investigated institutional exchange, physician collaboration, clinical co-occurrence, and workplace interaction networks. Several robust and ongoing research programs were discerned within (and sometimes across) the groups. Little interaction was observed between these programs, despite conceptual and methodological similarities. Discussion We use the literature sample to inform a discussion of good practice at this methodological interface, including the concordance of motivations, study design, data, and tools and the validation and standardization of techniques. We then highlight instances of positive feedback between methodological development and knowledge domains and assess the overall cohesion of the sample.

Abstract This workshop aim is to explore the call that is proposed by the WHO declarations of Nairobi and Shangai, that institutions should move forward to become health literate organizations. This workshop addresses qualitative and quantitative health literacy research work settings of health and non-health professionals. Health literacy has evolved into a significant public health and health promotion goal which is especially influenced by the social and cultural background, the availability of resources, and the settings in which it is practised. Basically, health literacy can be defined as the knowledge and skills to access, understand, appraise and apply health information in order to promote health and well-being. For a long period most research had focused on adult patients in clinical settings, but in the recent past there have been significant efforts from research, practice, and policy towards citizens in other organizational settings, which is due to findings stating that effective health literacy promotion begins and continues across all settings in a whole society approach since health is mostly shaped outside the health care setting. Such approaches can also be influential when addressing the reduction of health inequalities. The main objective of this workshop is to present first time empirical findings and developments from ongoing research projects of the Health Literacy in workplace (ProLiSa). Thereby, it will shed light on the health literacy of professionals, and link the current debate with contemporary public health approaches to advance the field of health literacy. The workshop will include 5 presentations with up to 15 minutes input followed by discussions. The first presentation is a tentative to understand health literacy and ehealth tools to improve quality of life. From Brazil a second presentation will consider health care organizations (hospitals) and the perspective to move to health literate organizations. From Portugal a third presentation will consider migration and integration and the case of health literacy as a foundation to promote cultural sensitiveness in the organizational setting. A forth presentation will consider how communicating with migrants can be a challenge and how children’s health literacy, digital technology can become and critical help. Finally the last presentation considers the role of health literacy and physical activity as buffers to counter act work related stress. This workshop offers a forum for researchers, practitioners and policy-makers interested in health literacy. By dialogue and two-way communication lively interaction and vivid discussions will be facilitated. This will allow discussing results with regard to their benefit for improving health literacy research, practice, and policy-making, support further synergies, break down barriers between research infrastructures, facilitate networking and collaboration, and support international capacity building. Key messages There is need for empirical health literacy research in work settings. It will allow informing sustainable and effective interventions and the development and application of better tools. Addressing the social environment will have impact on public health research & practice, will facilitate the development of health literate organizations, new concepts/strategies for health promotion.

Background: People with intellectual disabilities are entitled to equitable access to psychological support. Traditional therapeutic approaches often rely on a person’s ability to verbally articulate a description of their life, which can be particularly difficult for emotionally salient information. Methods: A systematic literature review was undertaken to determine the evidence base underpinning the use of participant-produced photography within therapeutic settings. Evidence across a range of specialisms was examined in order to extrapolate areas of best practice and make recommendations for its implementation alongside people with intellectual disabilities. Results: A systematic search of peer-reviewed journals identified 13 relevant documents. Participant-produced photography showed promise, although evidence pertaining specifically to people with intellectual disabilities was sparse ( n = 2). Conclusion: Participant-produced photography within therapeutic settings shows promise for people with intellectual disabilities. Methodological limitations made it difficult to derive firm conclusions regarding the effectiveness of different approaches. Implications for clinical and research practice are discussed.

This article focuses on the impact of COVID-19 in Africa, describes its effects for ongoing research, and asks how it may impact African studies. In Africa, as elsewhere in the world, the pandemic is changing the way people think about the future. The crisis gives rise to a feeling of uncertainty, while casting doubt on future orientations based on forecasts and planning. This scepticism does not concern the African continent alone, but it is here that the call to open a fresh perspective on the future is expressed most emphatically. COVID-19 reinvigorates the question of how African futures are imagined and shaped in relation to the world at large. Against this backdrop, this article suggests three areas where future-oriented African studies should be revised in response to the current crisis – namely, how to incorporate uncertainty, how to decolonise understandings of African futures, and how to translate these considerations into research practice.
