Abstract Background Evidence-based practice is among core competencies of health care professionals (HCPs). However, the levels of evidence-searching capability may differ among various disciplines of HCPs as they receive different education and trainings for various durations in medical schools and teaching hospitals. Methods This study aimed to compare the evidence-searching capability among different disciplines of HCPs and identify which aspects need to be reinforced. From a teaching hospital, we recruited 80 HCPs of various disciplines and compared their evidence-searching capability by using a validated scale. To examine if sex and education levels affect evidence-searching capability, we performed a multiple linear regression analysis with collinearity diagnostics. Results Physicians and pharmacists performed significantly better than other disciplines in the seven formative assessment items and the summative item (all P < 0.05). No collinearity was detected between discipline and age nor level of education. Except for the 2nd formative assessment item (correlation coefficient 0.24 ± 0.12, P = 0.04), participant’s levels of education did not affect evidence-searching capability. Age was associated with lower evidence-searching capability in five formative and the summative assessment items. Conclusions We found a better evidence-searching capability among physicians and pharmacists than other HCPs who may require more training on evidence-searching skills. Also, evidence-searching skills training should be provided to HCPs irrespective of age and education levels.

Hospital reimbursements are linked to patient satisfaction surveys, which are directly related to interpersonal communication between provider and patient. In today’s health care environment, interactions are challenged by diversity — Limited English proficient (LEP) patients, medical interpreters, International Medical Graduate (IMG) physicians, nurses, and support staff. Accent modification training for health care professionals can improve patient satisfaction and reduce adverse events. Surveys were conducted with medical interpreters and trainers of medical interpreting programs to determine the existence and support for communication skills training, particularly accent modification, for interpreters and non-native English speaking medical professionals. Results of preliminary surveys suggest the need for these comprehensive services. 60.8% believed a heavy accent, poor diction, or a different dialect contributed to medical errors or miscommunication by a moderate to significant degree. Communication programs should also include cultural competency training to optimize patient care outcomes. Examples of strategies for training are included.

Introduction:Evidence-based training and curriculum are seen as vital in order to be successful in preparing paramedics for an effective disaster response. The creation of broadly recognized standard core competencies to support the development of disaster response education and training courses for general health care providers and specific health care professionals will help to ensure that medical personnel are truly prepared to care for victims of mass casualty events.Aim:To identify current Australian operational paramedic’s specific disaster management education and knowledge as it relates to disaster management core competencies identified throughout the literature and the frequency of measures/techniques which these paramedics use to maintain competency and currency.Methods:Paramedics from all states of Australia were invited to complete an anonymous online survey. Two professional bodies distributed the survey via social media and a major ambulance service was surveyed via email.Results:The study population includes 130 respondents who self-identified as a currently practicing Australian paramedic. Paramedics from all states except South Australia responded, with the majority coming from Queensland Ambulance Service (N= 81%). In terms of experience, 81.54% of respondents report being qualified for greater than 5 years. Initial analysis shows that despite the extensive experience of the practitioners surveyed when asked to rate from high to low their level of knowledge of specific disaster management core competencies a number of gaps exist.Discussion:Core competencies are a defined level of expertise that is essential or fundamental to a particular job, and serve to form the foundation of education, training, and practice for operational service delivery. While more research is needed, these results may help inform industry, government, and education providers to better understand and to more efficiently provide education and ongoing training to paramedics who are responsible for the management of disaster within the Australian community.

Context:  The ability to engage in interprofessional and collaborative practice (IPCP) has been identified as one of the Institute of Medicine's core competencies required of all health care professionals. Objective:  To determine the perceptions of athletic trainers (ATs) in the collegiate setting regarding IPCP and current practice patterns. Design:  Cross-sectional study. Patients or Other Participants:  Of 6313 ATs in the collegiate setting, 739 (340 men, 397 women, 2 preferred not to answer; clinical experience = 10.97 ± 9.62 years) responded (11.7%). Main Outcome Measure(s):  The Online Clinician Perspectives of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice survey section 1 assessed ATs' perceptions of working with other professionals (construct 1), ATs engaged in collaborative practice (construct 2), influences of collaborative practice (construct 3), and influences on roles, responsibilities, and autonomy in collaborative practice (construct 4). Section 2 assessed current practice patterns of ATs providing patient care and included the effect of communication on collaborative practice (construct 5) and patient involvement in collaborative practice (construct 6). Between-groups differences were assessed using a Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U tests (P &lt; .05). Results:  Athletic trainers in the collegiate setting agreed with IPCP constructs 1 through 4 (construct 1 = 3.56 ± 0.30, construct 2 = 3.36 ± 0.467, construct 3 = 3.48 ± 0.39, construct 4 = 3.20 ± 0.35) and indicated that the concepts of constructs 5 and 6 (1.99 ± 0.46, 1.80 ± 0.50, respectively) were sometimes true in their setting. Athletic trainers functioning in a medical model reported lower scores for construct 5 (1.88 ± 0.44) than did those in an athletic model (2.03 ± 0.45, U = 19 522.0, P = .001). A total of 42.09% of the ATs' patient care was performed in collaborative practice. Conclusions:  Athletic trainers in the collegiate setting agreed that IPCP concepts were beneficial to patient care but were not consistently practicing in this manner. Consideration of a medical model structure, wherein more regular interaction with other health care professionals occurs, may be beneficial to increase the frequency of IPCP.

Background. Job satisfaction and working atmosphere are important for optimal health care delivery. The study aimed to document working atmosphere and job satisfaction of health care professionals in Kenya and to explore associations between job satisfaction, staff characteristics, and working atmosphere.Methods. Data from the integrated quality management system (IQMS) for the health sector in Kenya were used. Job satisfaction was measured with 10 items and with additional 5 items adapted to job situation in Kenya. Working atmosphere was measured with 13 item questionnaire. A stepwise linear regression analysis was performed with overall job satisfaction and working atmosphere, aspects of job satisfaction, and individual characteristics.Results. Out of 832 questionnaires handed out, 435 questionnaires were completed (response rate: 52.3%). Health care staff indicated high commitment to provide quality services and low levels regarding the adequacy and functionality of equipment at their work station. The aspect “support of the ministry of health” (β= 0.577) showed the highest score of explained variance (32.9%) regarding overall job satisfaction.Conclusions. IQMS which also evaluates job satisfaction and working atmosphere of health care staff provides a good opportunity for strengthening the recruitment and retention of health care staff as well as improving the provision of good quality of care.

This study aims to find out how the influence of apprenticeship programs and life skills training partially or simultaneously influences the growth of new entrepreneurs. This research was carried out in the city of Medan with a total sample of 100 community members who had been nurtured through apprenticeship programs and life skills training organized by the North Sumatra UMKM Center. This research is a quantitative descriptive study with MPDEL multiple linear regression analysis. The data used in this study are primary data obtained through questionnaires. The results show that all indicators of apprenticeship program variables, life skills training, and new entrepreneurial growth are valid and reliable so that they are worthy of being used for sample testing. The results of the sample test show that partially apprenticeship and Life Skills Training influence the growth of new entrepreneurs. Simultaneously there is the influence of apprenticeship and life skills training on the growth of new entrepreneurs.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimanakan pengaruh program pemagangan dan pelatihan kecakapan hidup secara parsial maupun simultan berpengaruh terhadap penumbuhan wirausaha baru. Penelitian ini laksanakan di kota Medan dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 100 orang warga masyarakat yang telah dibina melalui program pemagangan dan pelatihan kecakapan hidup yang diselenggarakan oleh UMKM Center Sumatera Utara. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kuantitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Data yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah data primer. Teknik pengumpulan data penelitian adalah teknik angket dan wawancara. Kuesioner yang dikembangkan terlebih dahulu diuji validitas dan reliabilitasnya, kemudian disebar kepada sampel. Model analisis data penelitian adalah model regresi linier berganda. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa semua indicator ukur variabel program pemagangan, pelatihan kecakapan hidup, dan penumbuhan wirausaha baru valid dan reliable sehingga layak digunakan untuk uji sampel. Hasil uji sampel menunjukkan bahwa secara parsial pemagangan berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap penumbuhan wirausaha baru, dan Pelatihan kecakapan hidup berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap penumbuhan wirausaha baru. Secara simultan pemagangan dan pelatihan kecakapan hidup memiliki pengaruh yang positif dan signifikan terhadap penumbuhan wirausaha baru.
