Objectives: In fluoroscopy-guided interventional practices, new dose reduction systems have proved to be efficient in the reduction of patient doses. However, it is not clear whether this reduction in patient dose is proportionally transferred to operators’ doses. This work investigates the secondary radiation fields produced by two kinds of interventional cardiology units from the same manufacturer with and without dose reduction systems. Methods: Data collected from a large sample of clinical procedures over a 2-year period (more than 5000 procedures and 340,000 radiation events) and the DICOM radiation dose structured reports were analysed. Results: The average cumulative Hp(10) per procedure measured at the C-arm was similar for the standard and the dose reduction systems (452 vs 476 μSv respectively). The events analysis showed that the ratio Hp(10)/KAP at the C-arm was (mean ± SD) 5 ± 2, 10 ± 4, 14 ± 4 and 14 ± 6 μSv·Gy−1·cm−2 for the beams with no added filtration, 0.1, 0.4 and 0.9 mm Cu respectively and suggested that the main cause for the increment of the ratio Hp(10)/KAP vs the “standard system” is the use of higher beam filtration in the “dose reduction” system. Conclusion: Dose reduction systems are beneficial to reduce KAP in patients and their use should be encouraged, but they may not be equally effective to reduce occupational doses. Interventionalists should not overlook their own personal protection when using new technologies with dose reduction systems. Advances in knowledge: Dose reduction technology in interventional systems may increase scatter dose for operators. Personal protection should not be overlooked with dose reduction systems.

Radioiodine in the thyroid gland after a therapy dose of 131I was measured serially in 7 patients without Carbimazole, and in 11 patients starting Carbimazole 60 mg daily fourteen days after the therapy dose. Effective half-life for radioiodine in the gland initially 5.53±1.08 days fell to 4.26±1.12 days (p < 0.01) during Carbimazole, and returned to 5.83±1.21 days (NS) after stopping the drug. The radiation dose to the thyroid from a given therapy dose of 131I followed by Carbimazole was calculated to be 97% of that without Carbimazole when the drug was started after 14 days, and 90% and 75% when the drug was started after 7 days and 1 day respectively.

SummaryThe authors investigated the use of 197Hg EDTA complex for kidney scanning. They describe the physical, biological and toxicological properties of the compound; its distribution within the organism, its excretion with urine and faeces and its uptake by the kidneys. The authors have established that the renal cortex selectively secretes the material which makes it suitable for kidney scanning. Some scintigrams of both normal and pathologic kidneys are presented.Finally a detailed discussion of the dosimetry is included. The radiation doses due to 197Hg EDTA are compared with those due to 203Hg-neohydrin and to intravenous pyelography. This comparison shows clearly that the use of 197Hg EDTA considerably decreases the radiation dose to the patient.

SummaryThe distribution of 32P-polyphosphates (lineal and cross-linked) and 32Porthophosphate in normal and tumor bearing animals has been studied. Differences between the cross-linked and the lineal form are related to a different degree of susceptibility to the hydrolysis by the phosphatases. In contrast to orthophosphate, the polyphosphates showed a lower accumulation in soft tissues which gives an advantageous reduction of the total body radiation dose.
