Objective To assess the reproducibility of a wedge-guided bitewing image receptor-holding device (IRHD-WG) compared to a commercially available bitewing image receptor-holding device (IRHD-XCP). Methods and materials Ten operators randomly acquired bitewing radiographs of four posterior regions (Premolar, Molar 1, Molar 2, Molar 3) distributed in two dry bone skulls and mandibles using 2 IRHDs (IRHD-WG and IRHD-XCP). The radiographs corresponding to the same region and IRHD but acquired by different operators were paired for reproducibility comparison. A total of 360 pairs of radiographs were randomized for analysis. Objective analysis consisted of extracting the pixel values from each radiograph and comparing the values between each pair by intraclass correlation coefficient. For subjective analysis, the IRHDs images were digitally removed. Five oral radiologists blinded for the study conditions classified the radiograph pairs according to their similarity and diagnostic value. The answers’ relative frequencies were compared by the chi-square test (α = 0.05). Results The IRHD-WG presented a higher reproducibility (Mean = 0.850; SD = 0.144) than the IRHD-XCP (Mean = 0.615; SD = 0.287) in the objective analysis. Radiographs acquired with the IRHD-WG were more similar than those acquired with the IRHD-XCP (p < 0.001). The diagnostic value of bitewing radiographs acquired with the IRHD-WG was considered superior to those acquired with the IRHD-XCP (p < 0.001). Conclusion For the objective and subjective analyses of reproducibility, the IRHD-WG performed better than the commercial IRHD-XCP.

Abstract Estimation of allelic and genotypic distributions for continuous data using kernel density estimation is discussed and illustrated for some variable number of tandem repeat data. These kernel density estimates provide a useful representation of data when only some of the many variants at a locus are present in a sample. Two Hardy-Weinberg test procedures are introduced for continuous data: a continuous chi-square test with test statistic TCCS and a test based on Hellinger's distance with test statistic TCCS. Simulations are used to compare the powers of these tests to each other and to the powers of a test of intraclass correlation TIC, as well as to the power of Fisher's exact test TFET applied to discretized data. Results indicate that the power of TCCS is better than that of THD but neither is as powerful as TFET. The intraclass correlation test does not perform as well as the other tests examined in this article.

Abstract The author seeks an answer to the question whether a higher intensity of tourism movement is connected with a higher share of tourism in the economy in selected tropical island territories. With the use of the Spearman correlation coefficient, the existence of the average positive correlation between the intensity of tourism movement and the share of tourism in the economy has been determined. In the second part of paper, the author looks at the conditions which affect the role of tourism in the economy in proportion to the intensity of tourism movement. For this purpose, the Chi-square test and detailed case studies of chosen tropical islands are discussed.

ABSTRACTStress can be perceived as a response to threats situations (either physical or psychological) caused by individual inability  to overcome existing threats within his/her environment. Job stress is the result of interaction between an individual (i.e. a worker) and his/her occupation. The objective of this study to identify the factor affecting tojob stress by the divers at PT. X. This study applied cross-sectional design conducted by observing the divers at PT. X. The population of this study was all divers working at PT. X. Data was analyzed by Spearman Correlation Test, Pearson Correlation Test, and Chi-square Test. The results of this study is strong correlation between personality type and job stress (as indicated by correlation coefficient 0.645). The divers’ age (correlation coefficient -0.283), educational level (correlation coefficient -0.220), years of service/experience (correlation coefficient -0.158), length of diving session (correlation coefficient 0.083), and threats of marine animal attack (correlation coefficient 0.156) had lower correlation with job stress. While the divers residence might also affect their job stress (as indicated by correlation coefficient 0.539).Keywords: job stress, diver

ABSTRACT Objective To compare the level of satisfaction in the use of wraparound Hawley and thermoplastic maxillary retainers. Materials and Methods The study sample included 70 orthodontic patients (24 males and 46 females), who were in the retention stage (mean age = 20.80 years). All patients wore the two types of maxillary retainer for 1 month each, along with a 3×3 fixed mandibular retainer. After the use of each retainer, the patients responded to a questionnaire evaluating the level of satisfaction with their use of the maxillary retainer. Intergroup comparison was performed by independent t tests. Chi-square test was used to evaluate preference for the type of retainer by gender. Results The thermoplastic retainer was better for swallowing and the wraparound Hawley appliance was better for hygiene and durability. The other factors evaluated (adaptation, speech, comfort, esthetics, satisfaction, and fitting) did not show significant differences between the retainers. There was also no significant difference in preference for the appliances. Conclusions Regarding the overall satisfaction and the preference, there was no difference between the wraparound Hawley and thermoplastic retainers. The wraparound Hawley appliance was better in hygiene and resistance than the thermoplastic retainer; and the thermoplastic appliance was better than the wraparound Hawley for swallowing fluids and saliva.

Abstract Background Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is one of the most aggressive malignancies. Late diagnosis may be responsible for the high mortality. MicroRNA-106b (MiR-106b) is accepted as an important regulator in various human malignancies. The current study was aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of miR-106b in CCA. Methods Serum levels of miR-106b in CCA patients and healthy control were evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Chi-square test was used to analyze the association of miR-106b with the clinicopathological features. To evaluate the diagnostic value of miR-106b in CCA, the ROC curve was constructed. Results The expression of miR-106b was significantly increased in CCA samples compared with the healthy controls (P < 0.001). The overexpression of miR-106b was remarkable correlated with the lymphatic node metastasis (P = 0.038), clinical stage (P = 0.017) and differentiation (P = 0.009). ROC curve suggested that miR-106b was an effective diagnostic biomarker in CCA with the AUC of 0.913. The optimal cutoff value was 2.525, with the sensitivity of 89.7% and the specificity of 79.3%. Conclusions MiR-106b functions as an oncogene in CCA, which may be an potential diagnostic biomarker for CCA.

Abstract Background: This study aimed to examine the expression of serum miR-378 in prostate cancer (PCa) patients and healthy individuals and to identify the value of miR-378 in PCa diagnosis. Methods: The expression of serum miR-378 between groups was compared by t-test. The association between miR-378 expression and clinical characteristics of PCa patients was assessed using Chi-square test. The diagnostic value of serum miR-378 in PCa was estimated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: The expression level of serum miR-378 in PCa patients was significantly lower than that in healthy individuals (P<0.0001). MiR-378 expression was affected by positive AR (P=0.004), large Gleason score (P=0.013) and advanced TNM stage (P=0.020), however, it had no relationship with age, serum PSA, NED rate and urine retention (all, P>0.05). The ROC curve showed that the optimal cutoff value was 1.845, giving the sensitivity and specificity of 75.21% and 89.77%, respectively. Besides, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.894, indicating serum miR-378 was of great diagnostic value in screening PCa patients from healthy controls (P<0.0001, 95%CI =0.852-0.936).Conclusions: Taken together, the increased expression of serum miR-378 might act as a potential biomarker for PCa diagnosis.
