Evaluating the use of LoLa in European conservatoires: The SWING project

The research presented in this article reports on the SWING project, a qualitative case study initiated by The Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen (AEC) into the use of LoLa (low-latency audio-visual streaming) for instrumental music teaching between conservatoires. LoLa is a software package that allows musicians to perform and interact together synchronously in real-time with high-quality audio, something not currently possible with standard videoconferencing platforms. LoLa is a relatively new technology and there is limited research available on how effective it is when used for instrumental music teaching. Trials of LoLa technology were conducted in three conservatoires in Austria, Italy and Slovenia in early 2019. Follow-up interviews were conducted with music teachers, students and technicians to understand their experiences of using the technology, what changes took place in the teaching, and to determine the potential and limitations of LoLa for teaching in conservatoires. Participants in the trials reported overall satisfaction with the system, with many being surprised at the high quality. The findings showed that LoLa can expand the possibilities for artistic development by facilitating synchronous interaction between teachers and students in different conservatoires. These possibilities include one-to-one lessons, group masterclasses, examinations, and opportunities to rehearse and perform synchronously with musicians from other institutions. This aligns with current research which calls for a reappraisal of the traditional one-to-one conservatoire studio lesson.

Ubiquitous computing scenarios such as the one-to-one model, in which every student is issued a device that is to be used across all subjects, have increased in popularity and have shown both positive and negative influences on education. Music teachers in schools that adopt one-to-one models may be inadequately equipped to integrate this kind of technology into their classrooms. The purposes of this study were to observe the behaviors and explore the dominant perceptions and concerns of music teachers in schools with one-to-one technology programs. This four-case study was based on the concerns-based adoption model, which has previously been used to analyze stakeholders’ concerns about adoption of an innovation such as a new technology. Participant teachers expressed their concerns about adoption of one-to-one technology in their schools and classrooms as they related to musical goals, extent of integration, changes that could improve the programs, and other pedagogical factors. Results showed that while the participants used the technologies in distinct ways and to varying extents, they shared concerns about technical support, pedagogical support, and authenticity of integration.

The aim of this article is to explore a range of largely embodied vocalisations and sounds produced by learners of string instruments and how they relate to the potential self-regulatory use provided by such vocalisations. This type of “singing” while learning to play an instrument may have similarities to the use of private speech in other types of learning tasks. This report describes a multiple case study based on the naturalistic observation of learners playing string instruments in different situations. We observed private rehearsals by six adult guitarists from different music cultures (classical, flamenco and jazz) who had different approaches to learning (traditional and constructivist). In addition, we observed the one-to-one lessons of a constructivist cello teacher with a 7-year-old beginner and a 12-year-old student. All sessions were recorded. We applied the System for Analysing the Practice of Instrumental Lessons to the video lessons and/or practices and participant discourse for constant comparative analysis across all categories and participants. From the theoretical framework of private speech, we identified a set of qualities in private singing, such as whistling, humming, and guttural sounds, with different levels of audibility. Self-guidance and self-regulation appeared to be the functions underlying both psychomotor learning and reflective-emotional learning from an embodiment approach. Guitar learners from popular urban cultures seemed to use less explicit singing expression than classical guitar learners, the explicitness of which may be related to the instructional use of the notational system. In the one-to-one cello lessons, we observed a process of increasing internalisation from the younger to the older student. Both results are consistent with the literature on private speech, indicating that this process is a natural process of internalisation at higher literacy levels. Singing is not as frequent in music lessons as might be expected, and it is even less frequently used as a reflective tool or understood as an embodied process. The examples provided in this article shed light on the multiplicity of applications and on the potential benefits of private singing in instructional contexts as a powerful learning tool.

Although resources exist to help instrumental music teachers assist learners in inclusive settings, students’ voices may be absent from those resources. As such, music teachers may struggle to honor the needs and experiences of students with physical differences. Students with physical differences may be steered away from instrumental music or toward an instrument that may not be the student’s preference. The purpose of this study was to understand the stories of students with physical differences and their teacher to examine how participation in instrumental music was enabled in this setting. Data were generated through examining artifacts and completing interviews with the instrumental music teacher, students, and students’ parents. Interview data were analyzed using process/action coding. Main themes that emerged were (a) previous experiences and prior knowledge, (b) recognizing strengths and challenges, (c) perseverance toward desires in the face of uncertainty, (d) help and support from others, and (e) materials. Implications for future research and possible applications to music teaching and music teacher education are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to determine if 1-week technology workshops can be an effective means for the professional development of music teachers in using technology for instruction. The results indicate that three indicators of effectiveness—teacher knowledge, teacher comfort, and frequency of teacher use—can he significantly improved in these settings. Participants ( N = 63) were music teachers enrolled in summer music technology workshops. At the beginning of the workshops, participants completed a questionnaire designed to provide demographic information and assess their knowledge of music technology, degree of comfort with music technology, and the frequency with which they used music technology in their teaching. Following an intensive weeklong workshop dealing with strategies for teaching music to K—12 students using music technology, participants completed a second questionnaire that was parallel to the first. Participants completed another similar questionnaire 9 to 10 months after the workshop. Significant differences were found between the pre-and. postworkshop questionnaires, between the preworkshop and follow-up questionnaires, and, between the postworkshop and follow-up questionnaires in all three areas. There was also a moderate correlation ( r = .43, p = .00) between participants' frequency of technological use and the degree to which they reported their access to technological resources.

The purpose of this case study was to explore how teachers and students use iPads in class, the obstacles and barriers to teacher and student iPad use, and the relationship between types and frequency of use, in one high school in Southern Oregon. The study consisted of classroom observations and follow-up interviews with nine teachers with iPad carts over a three week period. Qualitative data was emphasized, with some quantitative data to support it. Overall, iPad use was low, even though access to iPads was high. When iPads were used, teachers used iPads mostly for communication and delivering instruction, and students used iPads mostly for reading, writing, and research. Observational data and interview data results on the types of use were consistent, indicating that teachers are well aware of how they use iPads in their classrooms.

The increasing availability of mobile technologies is allowing users to interact seamlessly with a variety of content anytime, anywhere. One of these new Web 2.0 technologies, or technologies that aim at enhancing and creating opportunities for user collaboration, is podcasting (Wikipedia, 2008; O’Reilly, 2005), an online audio and video publishing tool. Podcasts are increasingly being used by language educators and learners, yet in the educational realm, podcasting is still in a development phase as teachers and students are just beginning to experiment with ways to best use the technology. Therefore, few guidelines exist in terms of researching this new technology, specifically with regards to language learning and teaching (Rosell-Aguilar, 2007). In this chapter we begin to close this gap by first providing an overview of podcasting. We then discuss the potential of podcasting to transform ways in which languages are learned. In doing so, we cite illustrative examples of podcasts currently being used by language educators and students, and suggest ways in which the effects of this technology on language learning processes may be researched in order to make pedagogically sound decisions about using podcasts for language learning and teaching. After presenting a case study investigating the use of podcasts at Iowa State University, we conclude with a reflection on the potential for podcasts to transform language learning and teaching.

This case study analyzes the availability and uses of teaching techniques and computing technologies in Grades 10, 11, and 12 Computer Applications Technology classes in a remote town in South Africa. The technologies and techniques trialed show promise of usefulness in being more engaging to student interest than the prior method. Human factors issues focus on ease of use and intuitiveness of technologies for both teachers and students. With 50-minute classes, if the technology becomes a hurdle rather than a vehicle for teaching a class concept, it defeats its own purpose. Thus, to be successful, technologies need to be selected carefully, matched to pedagogical goals, calibrated for student skills, installed, tested, and ready for use. Students need support, encouragement, and, occasionally, prodding to use new technology. Thus, ICTs in the classroom require a technologically and pedagogically knowledgeable teacher.

Multiple forms of support for teachers new to the profession are important and necessary. The use of an online community by 11 novice instrumental music teachers at the middle school and high school levels was investigated in this case study. The teachers exchanged messages and information within the online community during the 2010–2011 school year; data sources included all transcripts from the online community and multiple interviews with each participant. The participants’ experiences in the utilization of the wikispace as an online community of practice was analyzed using Wenger’s three components of domain, community, and practice. The findings suggest that the online community appeared to have met novice teachers’ emotional needs as they learned to become music teachers but that their positions were often also quite different in terms of specific responsibilities and music curricula they taught. Thus, online conversations focused more on the affective issues that surround being a new music teacher rather than on curriculum and classroom-specific content.

The perspectives of music teachers and students on the main benefits of collaborative musical learning are explored in this chapter. Qualitative data from two recently conducted studies are discussed through the main conceptual resources of the “embodied approach” to mind. In these studies, an open-ended questionnaire was administered to expert music teachers and students from the European Union and North America who took part in individual and collective instrumental music classes. The overall results indicate that the joint element of the tuition allowed students to become more responsible for their own learning, helping teachers foster more inclusive settings where interactions among peers are prioritized. Having considered the relevance of the results in light of classic views on peer-learning by Piaget and Vygotsky, it is argued that an embodied approach can help researchers and educators better capture the relational dynamics of collective pedagogies.
