Running times of high-speed rolling stock can be reduced by increasing running speed on curved portions of the track. During curving, flange contact causes large lateral force, high frequency noises, flange wears and wheel load fluctuation at transition curves. To avoid derailment and hunting, and to improve ride comfort, i.e., to improve the curving performances at high speed, forced/active steering bogie design is studied in this chapter. The actively steered bogie is able to negotiate cant excess and deficiency. The bogie performance is studied on flexible irregular track with various levels of cant and wheel wear. The bogie and coach assembly models are developed in Adams VI-Rail software. This design can achieve operating speed up to 360 km/h on standard gauge ballasted track with 150mm super-elevation, 4km turning radius and 460m clothoid type entry curve design. The key features of the designed bogie are the graded circular wheel profiles, air-spring secondary suspension, chevron springs in the primary suspension, anti-yaw and lateral dampers, and the steering linkages.

Hydrogen is an important raw material in chemical industries, and the steam reforming of light hydrocarbons (such as methane) is the most used process for its production. In this process, the use of a catalyst is mandatory and, if compared to precious metal-based catalysts, Ni-based catalysts assure an acceptable high activity and a lower cost. The aim of a distributed hydrogen production, for example, through an on-site type hydrogen station, is only reachable if a novel reforming system is developed, with some unique properties that are not present in the large-scale reforming system. These properties include, among the others, (i) daily startup and shutdown (DSS) operation ability, (ii) rapid response to load fluctuation, (iii) compactness of device, and (iv) excellent thermal exchange. In this sense, the catalyst has an important role. There is vast amount of information in the literature regarding the performance of catalysts in methane steam reforming. In this short review, an overview on the most recent advances in Ni based catalysts for methane steam reforming is given, also regarding the use of innovative structured catalysts.

In order to research the safety characteristics of carrier-based aircraft in yaw arrest, a complete dynamic model of the arresting system of a certain type of aircraft was developed to understand more about its dynamic properties. Based on the discrete kink-wave model, a simulation of centering arrest was conducted. The simulation results were compared with experimental data from the United States (US) military standards, demonstrating that the basic changing laws are almost the same. On the basis of centering arrest, a simulation of yaw arrest was carried out. The results show that in yaw state, the difference in the lengths of the arresting cables on either side of the hook is smaller in the early stage after the hook hangs on the rope, which leads to little influence on load fluctuation produced by the kink-wave. With the increase in arresting distance, the difference in the lengths of the arresting cables on either side becomes larger, resulting in a situation in which the cable tension on the departure side will gradually become greater than that on the opposite side. In this situation, yaw landing has a negative impact on the characteristics of arresting safety, and the excessive yaw angle causes the aircraft to rush out of the safe landing area.

In order to meet the user’s electricity demand and make full use of distributed energy, a hybrid energy system (HES) was proposed and designed, including wind turbines (WTs), photovoltaic (PV) power generation, conventional gas turbines (CGTs), incentive-based demand response (IBDR), combined heat and power (CHP) and regenerative electric (RE) boilers. Then, the collaborative operation problem of HES is discussed. First, the paper describes the HES’ basic structure and presents the output model of power sources and heating sources. Next, the maximum operating income and minimum load fluctuation are taken as the objective function, and a multi-objective model of HES scheduling is proposed. Then an algorithm for solving the model is proposed that comprises two steps: processing the objective functions and constraints into linear equations and determining the optimal weight of the objective functions. The selected simulation system is a microgrid located on an eastern island of China to comparatively analyze the influence of RE-heating storage (RE-HS) and price-based demand response (PBDR) on HES operation in relation to four cases. By analyzing the results, the following three conclusions are drawn: (1) HES can comprehensively utilize a variety of distributed energy sources to meet load demand. In particular, RE technology can convert the abandoned energy of WT and PV into heat during the valley load time, to meet the load demand combined with CHP; (2) The proposed multi-objective scheduling model of HES operation not only considers the maximum operating income but also considers the minimum load fluctuation, thus achieving the optimal balancing operation; (3) RE-HS and PBDR have a synergistic optimization effect, and when RE-HS and PBDR are both applied, an HES can achieve optimal operation results. Overall, the proposed decision method is highly effective and applicable, and decision makers could utilize this method to design an optimal HES operation strategy according to their own actual conditions.
