Interdiscursivity and Promotional Discourse: A Corpus-Assisted Genre Analysis of About Us Texts on Chinese University Websites

Abstract The debate on the marketization of discourse in higher education has sparked and sustained interest among researchers in discourse and education studies across a diversity of contexts. While most research in this line has focused on marketized discourses such as advertisements, little attention has been paid to promotional discourse in public institutions such as the About us texts on Chinese university websites. The goal of the present study is twofold: first, to describe the generic features of the university About us texts in China; and second, to analyze how promotional discourse is interdiscursively incorporated in the discourse by referring to the broader socio-political context. Findings have indicated five main moves: giving an overview, stressing historical status, displaying strengths, pledging political and ideological allegiance, and communicating goals and visions. Move 3, displaying strengths, has the greatest amount of information and can be further divided into six sub-moves which presents information on campus facilities, faculty team, talent cultivation, disciplinary fields construction, academic research, and international exchange. The main linguistic and rhetorical strategies used in these moves are analyzed and discussed.

Universities fulfill the mission of carrying out teaching, research and extension based on a recognition of education as an instrument of social transformation. In this sense, public institutions are being increasingly charged for the efficiency and effectiveness of their actions. From this context, evaluation mechanisms emerge to measure effectiveness and assign concepts to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). From the recognition of the instruments that recommend the institutional evaluation in Brazil, the mention of the planning actions, the Institutional Development Plan (PDI) becomes strategic, and in this it is observed as an indicator to be inserted, the accompaniment of graduates of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The objective of the research is to identify the actions and goals foreseen in the IDPs of Brazilian federal universities in the Southeast region to follow up their graduates. The development of this work was through the qualitative approach with documentary research, by searching the university websites for the available institutional information. The results point to two distinct contexts, in which most of the researched institutions inserted in their macro-document the theme, one group aims to implement the policy and another group intends to advance to other follow-up stages, since it is a policy already institutionalized.

Many governments, the university sector and the European Commission have recognized that increasing university autonomy represents a crucial step towards modernizing higher education in the 21st century. This study which was conducted at Kyambogo University highlights that in practice, public authorities still play a central role in the regulation of higher education systems more especially in the appointment and dismissal of academic staff. Despite the fact that the ministry has moved away from direct state control towards more “indirect” steering mechanisms, universities often continue to lack autonomy in many crucial areas, particularly in terms of filling staff positions. The purpose of this study therefore was to establish the level of institutional autonomy in academic staff appointment and removal at Kyambogo University. The researchers analysed each dimen¬sion of university autonomy in terms of appointment and dismissal of academic staff. We found out that appointment and removal of the academic staff in Kyambogo University was not in line with what is provided for in the Human Resource Manual and national guiding Acts, Laws and Standing orders. We recommend that since universities have a unique duty to perform that requires specific skilled staff, they should be given autonomy in the appointment and removal of these staff.

Universities engage in teaching and research. They prepare students to become men of action in practical politics, the civil service, the practice of law, medicine, surgery etc. Others studying at universities want to become scholars and scientists whose style of work is far removed from the on-the-spot decisionmaking which is so important among the former category. The professions and disciplines taught and developed at universities require a great variety of manpower and organization of entirely different kinds. Universities nevertheless insist on comprising all of them, in the name of an idea stemming from a time when one person was really able to master all the arts and sciences. They, furthermore, attempt to perform all these complex tasks within the framework of corporate self-government reminiscent of medieval guilds. Indeed there have been serious doubts about the efficiency of the university since the 18th century. Reformers of the “Enlightenment” advocated the abolition of the universities as useless remnants of past tradition and establish in their stead specialized schools for the training of professional people and academies for the advancement of science and learning. This program was actually put into effect by the Revolution and the subsequent reorganization of higher education by Napoleon in France. The present day organization of higher education in the Soviet Union still reflects the belief in the efficiency of specialized professional schools as well as specialized academic research institutions.

One of the most significant managerial functions is motivating which leads to the implementation of the particular organizational objectives, to shaping of engagement and loyalty of its members and, consequently, to the raising effectiveness of their actions. The properly constructed solutions in the area of employee motivating process may result in the several benefits for the organization, which is true also for the public institutions including the academic ones. The aim of the herein study was the identification of the factors which have an impact on the motivation of employees of the higher education institution. The research was conducted with the questionnaire survey among the non-academic employees of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland. The conducted survey concludes that the motivation of employees is affected by various factors, mostly concerning the remuneration for work and also with the self-development possibilitities, interpersonal relations, and effective communication. It is vital and worth to use the knowledge about them for improving the quality and efficiency of the organization.

This chapter reviews the history of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh. The IASH, formally established in 1970, is the oldest Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Britain’s first, and Scotland’s only IAS. However, in its nearly fifty-year history, no effort has been made to tell IASH’s story. This can be partly attributed to a lack of understanding of IASs within the history of education, as well as a gap in the literature concerning IASs more generally. Investigating the history of IASH and its role in the development of postgraduate study not only adds to the scholarship on post-war Scottish higher education but also highlights the impact of academic research in Scotland since the 1960s.

The Project for the Civic and Environmental Commons is a cluster of initiatives, started by the Appalachian Center, University of Kentucky, in 1999, to support academic/ citizen partnerships in action research for equity and sustainability in the Appalachian region. It tries to serve as a bridge between movements within and outside academe. First, it attempts to link the university with the global movement for community-based development. A ferment of creativity in the nongovernmental sector in the last two decades has generated a rich variety of research methods (especially in participatory and place-based techniques for community assessment) and new organizational models for decentralized and democratic planning. The Project attempts to channel new techniques and models from this grassroots experimentation into university training and research, and to provide whatever support academics can give to citizen-led, community-based development. Second, the Project for the Civic and Environmental Commons tries to join this community-based work with reform movements within higher education that argue that institutional change is necessary for higher education to adequately respond to emerging problems of the 21st century. Those who call for a "New Academy" and for "public scholars" argue that much of academic research needs to be more targeted to meeting public needs and problems, and that the professionalization process needs to do a better job of producing scholars who are intellectually and emotionally able to engage in community-based work.

The aim of the article is to discuss the issues related to teaching the subject of media education at Polish public universities. The article contains the analysis of the syllabuses of subjects from the 2019/2020 academic year, published on the university websites under USOS system, The basic research question, undertaken in the article, refers to the mutual compliance of the program contents described in individual syllabuses.
