ABSTRACTThis study is intended to acquire empirical evidence regarding the impact of the teacher's Indirect Written Corrective Feedback on students' writing ability of explanation texts. Fifty six students enrolling at a high school in Jakarta were selected as the sample. They were separately distributed in the experimental class and the control class that respectively contained 28 students. Purposive sampling was utilized to recognize who the research subjects were and what level of their competence was for inclusion in this study. A quasi-experimental design, which is a subpart of a quantitative method, was employed. The data were assembled by running a writing test in the pre-test and post-test sections, whose results were followed by normality and homogeneity tests. The findings showed that the experimental class’ post-test outcome was 64.71, while the control class’ post-test was 58.25. Since the t-value surpasses the t-table (2.502>1.675), it indicates that the teacher's Indirect Written Corrective Feedback has a significant effect on improving students' writing explanation texts.ABSTRAKStudi ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh bukti riil terkait pengaruh dari umpan balik tertulis tidak langsung oleh guru terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks eksplanasi.

This research aims at finding out whether or not the use of extensive reading is effective for teaching writing explanation text to the eleventh grade at Islamic University in Semarang. Quasi experimental research was applied as the method. The researchers took two groups as the sample, they were XI MIPA 6 as the experimental class and XI MIPA 2 as the control class. The total subject of this research was 65. This research used SPSS in analysing the data of writing test through several activities. They were pre-test before treatments, and post-test after treatments. The result of the research shows the significance difference in the writing ability of explanation text between eleventh-graders who were taught by using extensive reading and those were not taught by using it. It can be seen in the result of mean score in the post-test of experimental class which is 64.4118 and control class which is 48.5484 and as a result Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00 < 0.05. Therefore, the null hyothesis of this research is rejected. It means that the use of extensive reading had significantly improved the eleventh-graders’ writing ability of the explanation text in English teaching and learning process of the experimental class at Islamic School in Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019.

This article presents the results of a study examining the effectiveness of written corrective feedback (CF) on the simple past tense and the impact beliefs may have on students’ uptake of the feedback they receive. A seven-week study was carried out with 42 advanced EFL learners in Vientiane, Laos. Students’ beliefs about written CF were first collected, after which they were assigned to either the control group or to groups that received written CF according to their feedback preferences. Students produced four pieces of writing (pre-test, post-test and two delayed post-tests) that responded to four different narrative prompts. The targeted grammatical feature was the simple past tense. The study found that the three feedback groups showed significant improvement in the use of the targeted feature while the control group did not. Furthermore, the results seemed to indicate that beliefs might have impacted on the extent to which the Lao students improved their linguistic accuracy because the students who received their preferred type of feedback were more successful at eliminating the targeted errors than the ones who did not.

This research aimed to investigate the effect of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and face-to-face (F2F) communication on the students’ writing. The subjects were the English department students of the fourth semester at the private University in Madiun. The researchers employed the students in class A and B as the research subjects. The research method used was a quasi-experimental design. The research design was divided into pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Both of the two groups were given pre-test to see the homogeneity of the two groups. The experimental group was given CMC, and the comparison group was given F2F communication. Then, both of the two groups were given post-test. The data collection technique was done by giving the students a writing test. Data analysis was done by employing the independent t-test. The result shows that the students’ writing after employing F2F communication is more effective than students’ writing after employing CMC. The students like to share the ideas directly than they employ CMC because it is more complicated. In addition, it is because the students find difficulty in sharing the ideas through CMC, so, F2F communication is better than CMC on the students’ writing quality.

The experiment group was taught with Edmodo while the control group was taught with Quipper School. The instrument was a writing test. The findings of this research, with respect to the comparison of post test mean scores between the experimental group and the control group, were as follows. There was a significant difference on students’ general writing ability. There were significant differences on students’ writing ability in the aspects of content and language use. However, there was no significant difference. The students’ responses were positive toward the use of Edmodo as a blended learning. Further studies are recommended for other school levels. It seems that Edmodo is more effective than Quipper School in writing lesson since the learning platform in Edmodo gives facilities for the students to work independently, enables them to improve their quality and has more practical, interactive, and interesting features.

The studies on error correction have been laying their emphasis on grammatical structures of the language with lack of focus on non-grammatical aspect such as lexical collocation. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the effect of direct and indirect written corrective feedback on low-performing ESL learners. Ninety-two students of a public university involved in the study. Three intact groups that have equal proficiency were identified at the beginning of the university’s academic term. A quasi-experimental design was employed with two experimental groups receiving indirect WCF and direct WCF separately, and a control group deprived of any treatment. The groups were measured in three different time points with pre-test before the intervention, immediate post-test after the intervention, and delayed post-test to measure retention effect. One-way ANOVA and repeated-measures ANOVA were used to measure the effect. The findings reveal that significant differences were detected in immediate post-tests of direct and indirect WCF groups which indicate that both WCF strategies can enhance participants’ collocational competency. Additionally, the findings also show that direct WCF strategy greatly affects participants collocation errors despite both groups performed better than the control group. This study demonstrates that retention effect was detected in the group that received direct WCF while the indirect WCF group was not able to retain - in delayed post-test. Recommendation is also discussed for Future directions of studies.Â
