ABSTRACT Priming is an alternative to improve the performance of seeds that have germination problems, such as Urochloa brizantha seeds. This study aimed at evaluating the appropriate hydration period and chemical agents used for priming, via direct immersion, in the physiological quality and carbohydrate content of U. brizantha seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 x 4 factorial arrangement, with four replicates of each treatment, consisting of lower, median and higher hydration periods, in the phase II of the absorption curve, and agents used for priming: water, gibberellin, sucrose and antioxidant (riboflavin). Germination and vigor tests were carried out, as well as carbohydrate contents determination, in the seeds. It was observed that seeds hydrated in the lower period show higher physiological potential. Priming with gibberellin provides a greater seedling emergence, and with sucrose higher carbohydrate contents.

ABSTRACT The season of harvest is one of the most important factors influencing seed quality. This study evaluated the effect of different harvesting times on the physiological quality of Coriandrum sativum L. seeds, cv. Palmeira. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six treatments (harvest times) and four replications. The experiment was conducted during the months of April to October 2010. The first moment to harvest seeds was carried out 15 days after full bloom, when approximately 50% of plants were in flowering phase. Other harvests (22, 29, 36, 43 and, 50 days after bloom) were carried out at 7 days intervals until the seeds reached 16.0% of moisture, which occurred in the 6th harvest. Immediately after each harvest, the seeds were analysed for water content, germination and vigor (first count, seedling emergence and emergence rate index). The harvest season most suitable for C. sativum seeds cv. Palmeira occurred between 46 and 50 days after flowering, when the seeds have the highest physiological quality and moisture content between 20 and 16%.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different spray volumes, via industrial treatment, on the physiological quality of soybean seeds with different levels of vigor. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x5 factor scheme, with four replications. Factors consisted in two levels of seed vigor (high and low) and five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL. 100 kg-1). Products used to obtain the volumes were: fungicide (carbendazin + thiram); insecticide (imidacloprid + thiodicarb); nematicide (abamectin); micronutrients (cobalt, molybdenum and zinc); polymer (peridiam); biostimulants (kinetin + gibberellic acid) and inoculum (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). The used cultivars were BRS 360 RR and BRS 1010 IPRO. The physiological seed quality was determined by the following evaluations: germination, first count of the germination test, seedling emergence in sand, emergency speed index, total length of shoot and root of the seedlings. In the different spray volumes, high vigor soybean seeds have higher physiological quality than low vigor seeds. The increased spray volumes in seed treatments reduce the physiological quality of low vigor soybean seeds.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of maturation fruit and drying temperatures stages on oil content and the physiological performance of crambe seeds. Randomized blocks were the experimental design, with four replications. Harvests occurred when the plants reached 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% brown color fruits. After harvest, seeds were dried at different temperatures (natural and artificial air at 30, 45 and 60 °C). The seeds were evaluated for the weight of a thousand seeds, productivity, oil content, germination and vigor (count of the first germination and seedling emergence). Crambe seeds, FMS Brilhante cultivar, reach the maximum oil content with harvests made from 70% of total brown color fruits. Drying temperatures do not affect the oil content of the seeds. Harvesting crambe seed aiming at the highest physiological quality should occur when the plants have between 75 and 85% brown fruits. Artificial drying at 30 and 45 °C can be recommended for crambe seeds, favoring the production of quality seeds.

ABSTRACT Seed priming provides a variety of benefits, including seed invigoration and reduced dormancy. Urochloa brizantha seeds are typically primed with difficult-to-acquire potassium nitrate (KNO3). In this sense, calcium salts stand out as an alternative, but it is important to determine whether they provide the same benefits as potassium nitrate. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of U. brizantha seeds after priming with calcium salts, and compare the results to those obtained with potassium nitrate. Seeds were submitted to priming with calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2] and calcium sulphate (CaSO4) at -0.55 MPa and -1.10 MPa, for 12 h and 24 h, and potassium nitrate (KNO3) at -1.10 MPa for 12 h, as well as to no priming (control). A completely randomized design, with ten treatments and four repetitions, was used. Priming promoted a higher germination percentage and lower seed dormancy, with a greater seedling emergence in a shorter time period. CaSO4 did not differ from KNO3 in shoot dry weight of seedlings, but reduced the electrical conductivity of seeds. Calcium nitrate and calcium sulfate show a promising potential for use in the osmotic priming of Urochloa brizantha (BRS Piatã cultivar) seeds, since they are as efficient as potassium nitrate, as well as less costly and easier to purchase. Calcium sulfate priming at -0.55 MPa for 12 h, at 25 ºC, is recommended to replace the potassium nitrate solution.

ABSTRACT Seed priming is a practice for improving the expression of seed physiological potential. Such technique consists of synchronizing and reducing the time of seed germination by controlled hydration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of seed-priming with different sugar sources and concentrations on the physiological quality Urochloa brizantha seeds and initial seedling performance. Before treating, seeds were scarified chemically with concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4) for 5 minutes to overcome physical dormancy. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3 x 6 factorial scheme consisting of priming using three sugar sources (glucose, sucrose, and maltose) and six concentrations (zero [water control], 2%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%), with four replicates. The seeds were primed by direct immersion for 2 hours at 25 ºC and, after hydration, they were dried for moisture equilibrium recovery. Seed germination, vigor, viability, and initial seedling growth were evaluated. The results showed that glucose was the source able to promote beneficial effects on the germination of U. brizantha cv. MG-5 seeds. Moreover, the supply of glucose at the concentrations of 2 and 5% for physiological conditioning increased seedling dry phytomass.

AbstractExtracellular potential is an important parameter which indicates the electrical activity of live cells. Membrane excitability in osteoblasts plays a key role in modulating the electrical activity in the presence of chemical agents. The complexity of cell signal makes interpretation of the cellular response to a chemical agent very difficult. By analyzing shifts in the signal power spectrum, it is possible to determine a frequency spectrum also known as Signature Pattern Vectors (SPV) specific to a chemical. It is also essential to characterize single cell sensitivity and response time for specific chemical agents for developing detect-to-warn biosensors. We used a 4x4 multiple Pt microelectrode array to spatially position single osteoblast cells, by using a gradient AC field. Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) and Wavelet Transformation (WT) analyses were used to extract information pertaining to the frequency of firing from the extracellular potential.

Since the first publication of this statement, much new information has been published concerning the transfer of drugs and chemicals into human milk. This information, in addition to other research published before 1983, makes a revision of the previous statement necessary. In this revision, lists of the pharmacologic or chemical agents transferred into human milk and their possible effects on the infant or on lactation, if known, are provided (Tables 1 to 7). The fact that a pharmacologic or chemical agent does not appear in the Tables is not meant to imply that it is not transferred into human milk or that it does not have an effect on the infant but indicates that there are no reports in the literature. These tables should assist the physician in counseling a nursing mother regarding breast-feeding when the mother has a condition for which a drug is medically indicated. The following questions should be considered when prescribing drug therapy to lactating women. (1) Is the drug therapy really necessary? Consultation between the pediatrician and the mother's physician can be most useful. (2) Use the safest drug; for example, acetaminophen rather than aspirin for oral analgesia. (3) If there is a possibility that a drug may present a risk to the infant (eg, phenytoin, phenobarbital), consideration should be given to measurement of blood concentrations in the nursing infant. (4) Drug exposure to the nursing infant may be minimized by having the mother take the medication just after completing a breast-feeding and/or just before the infant has his or her lengthy sleep periods.

Food bar is high caloric food made from blended food, enriched with nutrients, then formed into a compact bar shape. It is usually consumed either as breakfast or as snack food and is better than cakes or chocolates. This study was aimed to characterize the effect of canarium nut addition on the making of banana puree food bar. A completely randomized experimental design with four levels of treatments, i.e. 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% was applied in this research. Result showed that banana puree food bar with canarium nut addition caused not only a decrease in moisture, ash, and carbohydrate contents of 3.96%, 0.1%, and 2.6% but also an increase in protein content and fat content of 1.99% and 4.68%, respectively. Keywords: canarium nut, food bar, Musa troglodytarum, puree, tongka langit banana   ABSTRAK Food bar merupakan produk pangan berkalori tinggi yang dibuat dari campuran bahan pangan (blended food), diperkaya dengan nutrisi, kemudian dibentuk menjadi bentuk padat dan kompak (a food bar form). Food bar biasanya digunakan untuk sarapan atau sebagai makanan ringan (camilan), food bar merupakan makanan yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan kue ataupun coklat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkarakterisasi pengaruh penambahan kenari dalam pebuatan food bar puree pisang tongka langit. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap faktor tunggal dengan perlakuan penambahan kenari 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa food bar puree pisang tongka langit dengan penambahan kenari menyebabkan terjadinya penuruanan kandungan air, abu, karbohidrat yaitu 3,96%, 0,1%, 2,6% dan peningkatan kadar protein sebesar 1,99% dan lemak 4,68%. Abstract: Initial seed vigor and sowing density interact in establishment of plants in the field, and can thus affect expression of the plasticity of the wheat crop and the yield and physiological quality of the seeds produced. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of seed vigor levels in combination with sowing densities on the yield and physiological potential of wheat seeds. The cultivars BRS Gralha-Azul and BRS Sabiá were used in a randomized block experimental design in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The treatments consisted of seeds of high and low vigor and four sowing densities (150, 250, 350, and 450 seeds.m-2). The following evaluations were made: seed yield, germination, first germination count, seedling length, seedling dry matter, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, and seedling emergence in sand. An increase in sowing density favors the seed yield of both cultivars; however, it reduces the vigor of the seeds produced by the cultivar BRS Gralha-Azul, especially of the seeds produced by plants originating from high vigor seeds. For the cultivar BRS Sabiá, an increase in sowing density decreases the germination performance of seeds produced by plants originating from low vigor seeds.

Storage is an important step in the production of soybean seeds, mainly in tropical regions, where high temperatures can drastically reduce seed quality. The storage at cooler temperatures may be a feasible alternative to preserve seed quality during storage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds artificially cooled by a dynamic process and stored in an environment, with non controlled temperature and relativity humidity. Two seed lots of cultivars Monsoy 8757, TMG 115 RR and BRS Valiosa RR were used. After processing and during packaging the seeds were cooled to 18 ºC by a dynamic process. Seed samples were collected after 0, 60 and 120 days of storage, using the following parameters germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand, speed of emergence index, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium and seed health. Although soybean seeds artificially cooled by the dynamic method may have slightly superior performance in maintaining physiological quality during storage in non-refrigerated warehouse, for lots of high physiological quality, these advantages are not observed.
