Analyzing the Determinants of Teachers’ Mathematics Teaching Competencies in Upper Primary Phase: Evidence from Namibia

The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which predictors of teachers’ competencies in teaching mathematics predict the outcomes of mathematics performance among learners at upper primary phase. The determinants were namely gender, teaching experience, region, qualification, and fields of study exert effect on teachers’ competencies in lesson planning and preparation, assessment and evaluation of learners, lesson delivery, the use of teaching strategies, the quality of homework, and the availability of teaching materials. The generic understanding of the impacts of predictors of teaching competencies on learners’ performance significantly informs the development of training programmes components, and teaching and learning processes across the schooling system. Shulman’s theory of teacher content and pedagogical knowledge underpinned the study. The study comprised of holistic samples of 117 mathematics teachers at upper primary phase teachers from 39 schools. The selection of three schools from each region followed three criteria, namely outstanding, moderate, and lower performances in Grade 10 examination. Data is collected from classroom observation and analysis of relevant documents. The findings show that predictor variables such as gender, teacher qualification, teaching experience, field of study, and region exerted effects on the way teachers plan and prepare the lesson, deliver the lesson, assess and evaluate learners, use the teaching materials, and the quality of work. Teachers who specialized in mathematics were more competent in mathematics teaching. The results presuppose that predictors of teachers’ competencies in teaching mathematics are essential for improving teaching and learning of mathematics in schools. The outcome of this study is beneficial to education officials who are directly responsible for coordinating the teaching of mathematics in schools and the allocation of teaching subjects, particularly mathematics. The findings showed that a number of teachers were not trained mathematics. This was an indication of the existing shortage of mathematics teachers in schools nationally. Untrained mathematics teachers negatively influenced learners’ performance. These outcomes implied that education planners at the national, regional and district levels should set up strategies on how to increase the production of mathematics teachers nationally in order to meet the demand of such teachers in schools.

Modern primary education, especially mathematics, requires constant innovation of teaching practice in order to modernize, rationalize, and efficiently the teaching process. Teaching mathematics should be experienced as a process that promotes learning with understanding, stimulates motivation, active learning, research, critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, drawing conclusions, exchange of experiences. The tendency to improve the quality of mathematics education has resulted in many studies pointing to the benefits of research-based mathematics (IN) teaching, known as inquiry-based learning (IBL), recognized as an essential way of organizing the teaching process to develop key competencies, abilities and skills in 21st century. Тhe aim of this paper is to see, based on a comprehensive theoretical analysis and the results of previous research. The created model of teaching mathematics based on research represents a useful framework for improving the quality of the process of teaching and learning mathematics, and empowers teachers in its application and affirmation, gaining insight into the way of organizing research learning.

A lecturer with a good performance has a positive impact on the quality of teaching and learning. The said quality  includes the delivery of teaching materials, learning methods, and ultimately the academic results of students. Performance of lecturers contributes significantly to the quality of research and community service which in turn improves the quality of teaching materials. It is desirable, therefore, to have a method to measure the performance of lecturers in carrying out the Tri Dharma (or the three responsibility) activities, which consist of teaching and learning process, research, and community service activities, including publications at both national and international level. This study seeks to measure the performance of lecturers and cluster them into three categories, namely "satisfactory", "good", and "poor". Data were taken from academic works of nursing study program lecturers in conducting academic activities. Clustering process is carried out using two machine learning approaches, which is K-Means and K-Medoids algorithms. Evaluation of the clustering results suggests that K-Medoids algorithm performs better compared to using K-Means. DBI score for clustering techniques using K-Means is -0.417 while the score for K-Medoids is -0.652. The significant difference in the score shows that K-Medoids algorithm works better in determining the performance of lecturers in carrying out Tri Dharma activities.

ResumoO presente estudo é uma pesquisa bibliográfica inspirada no Estado do Conhecimento, tendo como objetivo compreender focos temáticos nas produções acadêmicas que utilizam/abordam o ensino de matemática através da resolução de problemas. Para tanto, realizou-se um mapeamento das produções acadêmicas publicadas nos periódicos: BOLEMA, Boletim GEPEM, Zetetiké, Educação Matemática em Revista e Educação Matemática Pesquisa, entre janeiro de 2011 e junho de 2019. In the current research we analysed our teaching experience in the course “Integration of digital technologies in teaching mathematics”. The students were mathematics student teachers. The main goal of the course was to demonstrate the potential of digital technologies in teaching mathematics and to provide the students with basic skills in the intellectual use of these technologies. During the course the students, after getting acquainted with various mathematical software packages, build and present their own teaching units. We were interested to analyse the students’ attitudes towards the course. A multiple-choice questioner was formulated, and the collected data were analysed. We observed that most of the students found the course being helpful for their future teaching. The obtained results indicated that the described course provided them a didactic model to emulate.

NCTM'S Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991) emphasizes that teachers are “the key” to changing mathematics teaching and learning. Given that mathematics reform movements have never brought about “large-scale changes in teachers' behavior and teaching practices” (Hitch 1990, p. 2), Willis (1992) lamented that “whether the standards will actually produce sweeping changes in the way mathematics is taught and learned in U.S. classrooms remains to be seen” (p. 1). With Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM 2000), we continue to ask the vital question, How can we induce teachers to implement the Standards?

<p><em>Guidance and assistance in learning are necessary for every child, whether it is for the students who have attended school or not. Most of the parents who live in the Bonang area can not fulfill this activity. Parents who have not be able to accompany their children in learning after school are caused several factors, namely cognitive inability of parents, the busyness of parents in work, and the inability of parents economically to send their children to learning center, and some are even do not trust some learning center. Mathematics education students are prepared in the field of school mathematics teaching and learning expertise. For them, this activity is a valuable opportunity to gain teaching experience, as well as learning to implement the theories that have been learned, both in terms of pedagogy and mathematics. The purpose of this community is as a place to synchronize students’ need to implement their learning practices with the needs of schoolchildren</em> <em>around Bonang. The activity is in the form of assistance at one of the residents’ houses in Bonang. The benefits of this assistance activity are felt by all parties, schoolchildren</em> <em>as learning participants receive learning guidance in terms of cognitive and character, parents who are assisted and feel happy to see children's development in education, and the tutors can directly learn to implement knowledge and practice teaching.</em></p><p><strong>ABSTRACT (INDONESIAN):</strong> Bimbingan dan pendampingan belajar diperlukan oleh setiap anak, baik yang bersekolah maupun yang tidak bersekolah. Kegiatan tersebut belum dapat dipenuhi oleh sebagian besar orang tua yang berdomisili di daerah Bonang. Orang tua yang belum dapat mendampingi anak-anaknya dalam belajar sepulang sekolah disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor yaitu ketidakmampuan orang tua secara kognitif, kesibukan orang tua dalam bekerja dan ketidakmampuan orang tua secara ekonomi untuk mengikutsertakan anaknya di dalam bimbingan belajar yang bersifat komersial, bahkan ada yang kurang percaya pada bimbingan belajar tertentu. Mahasiswa pendidikan matematika dipersiapkan pada bidang keahlian belajar mengajar matematika sekolah. Bagi mahasiswa, kegiatan tersebut merupakan kesempatan yang berharga untuk mendapatkan pengalaman mengajar, sekaligus belajar untuk mengimplementasikan teori yang sudah dipelajari, baik dari segi pedagogy maupun keilmuan matematika. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah sebagai wadah untuk mensinkronisasikan kebutuhan mahasiswa untuk mengimplementasikan praktik pembelajaran mereka dengan kebutuhan anak sekolah di sekitar Bonang. Adapun kegiatan bimbingan belajar tersebut diselenggarakan di rumah salah satu warga di Bonang. Manfaat kegiatan bimbingan belajar ini dirasakan oleh semua pihak, anak-anak sekolah sebagai peserta belajar mendapatkan bimbingan belajar dari segi koginitif dan karakter, orangtua yang terbantukan dan merasa bahagia melihat perkembangan anak dalam pendidikan dan mahasiswa pendidikan matematika yang menjadi tutor dapat secara langsung belajar mengimplementasikan ilmu dan praktek mengajarnya.</p>

It is obvious, that collaboration plays an increasing role among science and mathematics teachers. It is quite useful if different ideas on science and mathematics teaching are shared among teachers. Teachers have better opportunities to experience collaboration. The collaborative process supports the transdisciplinarity of science and mathematics teaching. Teachers are able to develop an understanding of how mathematics and science concepts can be taught in creative, playful and effective way. The project MaT²SMc is implemented in the frame of EU Lifelong Learning Programme. The main idea of the project is to find a way to increase students' motivation to learn in the key subjects mathematics and science. From one side, mathematics teachers should understand that there is a meaningful and realistic context to use mathematics. From the other side, science teachers should understand that the mathematics competences required for more effective science teaching and learning. In such a context the collaboration of science and mathematics teachers is very relevant. Currently it is obvious that mathematics and natural science teachers‘ collaboration on integration purposes at school is limited by some factors. Collaboration of mathematics and natural science teachers should be expanded, for this purpose, it is necessary to create all necessary conditions and didactic providing (support). It is obvious, that collaboration of mathematics and science teachers is important for improvement of quality of natural science education. [Bahasa]: Kegiatan pengadian kepada masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk mendampingi guru dalam membuat bahan ajar matematika berbasis etnomatematika dan mengetahui respon peserta terhadap kegiatan tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah service learning yang terbagi menjadi dua kegiatan yaitu synchronous dan asynchronous. Anchronous terdiri atas penyampaian materi dan presentasi, sedangkan asynchronous berupa bimbingan pembuatan bahan ajar. Peserta yang mengikuti kegiatan PkM ini adalah sebanyak 408 guru matematika yang menghasilkan sebanyak 78 buah bahan ajar setelah revisi. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukkan lima kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh guru matematika dalam menuliskan bahan ajar berbasis etnomatematika antara lain: (1) bahan ajar yang dibuat tidak sesuai template yang ditentukan, (2) bahan ajar tidak memanfaatkan filosofi/nilai budaya, namun hanya melihat bentuk objek, (3) bahan ajar tidak didasarkan pada budaya tertentu, (4) materi dan langkah pembelajaran tidak sesuai dengan filosofi budaya yang diangkat, dan (5) kegiatan tidak dirancang dengan baik dan berpotensi plagiat. Respon peserta terhadap kegiatan dapat dikategorikan sangat baik (4,55), sedangkan pengetahuan peserta mengenai etnomatematika dan kesulitan yang mungkin dihadapi peserta dalam membuat dan menerapkan bahan ajar berbasis etnomatematika di kelas tergolong baik, dengan nilai rata-rata masing-masing 3,9. Hal yang masih perlu diperhatikan oleh guru matematika adalah meluangkan lebih banyak waktu dalam mengeksplorasi nilai budaya sehingga filosofi dari budaya tersebut sesuai dengan konteks materi yang akan diajarkan. Guru juga perlu meningkatkan kemampuan dalam membuat dan menerapkan bahan ajar berbasis etnomatematika dalam proses pembelajaran matematika. Kata Kunci: etnomatematika, pembuatan bahan ajar, pengabdian kepada masyarakat, matematika [English]: This community service program (PkM) aims to assist teachers in designing ethnomatematics-based mathematics teaching materials and examine participants' responses to the program. The method used is service learning in the form of synchronous and asynchronous. The first included presentations and content discussions, while the latter was to guide the teachers design teaching materials. There were 408 mathematics teachers participated in this program which resulted in 78 revised teaching materials. There were five mistakes made by the mathematics teachers in designing the ethnomathematics-based teaching materials: (1) it did not comply the specified template, (2) it did not acknowledge cultural philosophies/values, but only refer to the shape of the object, (3) it did not adopt a specific culture, (4) the materials and learning steps were not in accordance with the cultural philosophy used, and (5) the activities were not well designed and have the potential for plagiarism. Participants’ responses to the program can be categorized as very good (4.55), while the participants' knowledge of ethnomatematics and the difficulties that participants may face in making and applying ethnomatics-based teaching materials in the classroom are classified as good, whereas each indicators has the average of 3.9. To the teachers need to spend more time exploring culture so that the philosophy of the culture is in accordance with the material to be taught. Also, the teachers should improve their ability to create ethnomathematical-based teaching materials and apply it in the instructional practices. Purpose - The Malaysian government has allocated a large budget for Orang Asli primary school education via the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) to help improve Orang Asli pupils’ academic performance including mathematics. Teachers face challenges in ensuring that Orang Asli pupils become competent learners of mathematics. Hence, this study examined the teachers’ perspectives on the issues and challenges in the teaching and learning of mathematics at Orang Asli primary schools in Malaysia. Methodology - In this qualitative study, Two Orang Asli primary schools were randomly selected from eight primary schools within an Orang Asli Settlement in the District of Sungai Siput. The data were collected via focus group discussions and interviews, which were carried out during enculturation visits and were fully transcribed and thematically analysed. The research participants were purposively selected and comprised the schools’ administrators and mathematics teachers. Findings - The results of the data analysis showed that there were two main themes, namely classroom challenges and school challenges, in determining mathematics competence among Orang Asli pupils. Classroom challenges consisted of five sub-themes namely coverage of mathematics syllabus, mathematics teaching and learning resources, pupil engagement, language barrier, and mathematics learning culture. School challenges consisted of two sub-themes namely school attendance and discipline. To enhance mathematics competence among Orang Asli pupils, it is deemed important to conduct programmes and community engagement. Significance - This study contributes to the knowledge of the teaching and learning of mathematics at Orang Asli primary schools. It is recommended that teachers allow Orang Asli pupils to take home their mathematics textbooks so that they can complete their homework at home. Teachers are highly encouraged to conduct mathematics teaching and learning activities in groups to develop meaningful and engaging lessons.
