A study was conducted to determine the effect of shredded Colophospermum (C.) mopane wood inclusion as roughage on the performance of fattening Nguni heifers. The heifers were randomly allocated to four diets with different shredded C. mopane wood inclusion levels (5, 8.5, 10 and 15%) in a completely randomized design. Shredded C. mopane wood inclusion level had effect (P less than 0.05) on intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Diet intakes per metabolic weight and FCR of Nguni heifers were optimised at different shredded C. mopane wood inclusion levels. However, shredded C. mopane wood inclusion levels did not affect (P greater than 0.05) diet in vitro digestibility, carcass weight, dressing percentage, meat pH, meat shear force values and meat colour intensities except for red colour intensity of rump steak. It was, thus, concluded that shredded C. mopane wood can be used as roughage without adversely affecting diet intake, FCR, and live weight of Nguni heifers.

This study aimed to assess the effect of stocking density of 10, 12, 14, and 16 birds m?2 on performance, carcass and cut yields, productivity, and bone development of broiler chickens Cobb 500®. The experimental design was completely randomized design with four treatments (stocking densities) and four replications. The assessments were performed weekly at 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days. The best live weight result was found at a density of 10 birds m?2 in the period from 1 to 7 days. No effect of density was observed on feed intake and weight gain. From 1 to 14 days, the best live weights were found at densities of 10, 12, and 14 birds m?2, in addition to a higher feed intake at densities of 10 and 12 birds m?2. Weight gain was better at a density of 10 birds m?2, showing no differences from densities of 12 and 14 birds m?2. In the period from 1 to 21 days, live weight and weight gain were higher at densities of 10, 12, and 14 birds m?2. The highest feed intake was observed at a density of 10 birds m?2, which showed no difference from the density of 14 birds m?2. A difference (P < 0.05) was observed for live weight, weight gain, and feed intake of animals reared at densities of 10, 12, and 14 birds m?2 for the phases from 1 to 35 days and the total phase from 1 to 42 days of bird age when compared to 16 birds m?2, which presented lower performance. However, feed conversion of 1-7, 1-14, 1-21, 1-35, and 1-42 days and carcass and cut characteristics showed no significant differences for all treatments. On the other hand, productivity was higher in the treatments with 14 and 16 birds m?2, but without difference between each other. No interaction (P > 0.05) was observed between stocking density and age for the assessed bone parameters. Similarly, no difference (P > 0.05) was observed for bone development of broiler chickens reared at different stocking densities for the studied parameters. Thus, the increased density of 10 or 12 birds m?2 to 14 birds m?2 has no influence on zootechnical performance, carcass and cut yields, and bone development, but increases broiler chicken productivity reared in a conventional shed without air conditioning.

The experiment was carried out to evaluate the productive performance of European quails (Coturnix coturnix) in the production phase, fed with diets containing different levels of digestible lysine. A total of 175 female quails, aged 65 days, were randomly distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments and five replicates per treatment. The animals were housed in 25 metal cages, and each cage represented an experimental parcel, with seven birds per parcel. The birds were fed the experimental rations containing 1.177, 1.217, 1.317, 1.417, and 1.517% digestible lysine. The parameters evaluated were: laying rate, mass of eggs produced, feed intake in the period, lysine intake, feed conversion per dozen and per mass. Significant differences were observed for posture rate with quadratic behavior, which indicated higher production for the level of 1.23% of digestible lysine. There was an increasing linear behavior for the feed and lysine intake, and for conversion feed per dozen and by mass, we observed quadratic behaviors. This indicates better feed conversion index when the optimal inclusion level was 1.33% and 1.404% of digestible lysine in the diet, respectively. The requirement of digestible lysine in diets for European quails is 1.404%, which corresponds to a daily intake of 421.20 milligrams of digestible lysine.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the requirement of digestible methionine for growing pullets at growth phase (7 to 12 weeks of age). A completely randomized design was distributed in five treatments, six replicates, and 15 pullets per experimental unit. 450 Dekalb White pullets from the 7th weeks of age, with an average initial weight of 313.14 ± 12.49 g were used. Dietary treatments consisted in five diets supplemented with DL-Methionine which resulted in five levels of digestible methionine (0.266, 0.294, 0.322, 0.350, and 0.378 %). Performance, serological blood, histopathology and histomorphometry data were evaluated. Quadratic responses were observed for final live weight (p < 0.0143), weight gain (p < 0.0073), feed conversion ratio (p < 0.0058), glycogen deposition in the liver (p < 0.0001), gamma-glutamyl transferase enzyme activity (p < 0.0008), and villus height (p < 0.0024) with digestible dMet levels. In conclusion, the use of 0.343 % dMet, corresponding to a dMet:dLys ratio 55, is recommended for white-egg pullets from 7 to 12 weeks of age.

PERFORMANCE OF BROILERS FED THE LAMTORO (LEUCAENA LEUCOCEPHALA) LEAF MEAL IN THE DIETS. The utilization of lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala) leaf meal (LLM) in broiler diets was investigated employing 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% levels substituted to the based diet (control). In this experiment, 100 birds were randomly allocated into five groups of treatments. Each treatment was repeated into four replications with five birds per each replication. The five dietary treatments were allotted to the birds in a completely randomized design. The birds were fed experimental finisher diets. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Effect of LLM inclusion up 20% on feed intake (g),  live weight gain (g) and feed conversion did not differ significantly  (P ˃ 0.05).  It may be inferred from these experiments that LLM  up to 20% can safely be substituted to broiler based diet. Keywords: Lamtoro leaf, broiler, performance

The experiment was conducted to compare the effects of different sources of Spirulina and vitamin mineral premix as feed additive on the growth performance of broiler. Two hundred day old broiler chicks (COBB-500) were divided into five groups such as T1-(Feed containing 0.30% Vitamin mineral premix+0.0% Spirulina), T2-(Feed containing 0.15% Vitamin mineral premix+0.15% Spirulina from China), T3-(Feed containing 0.0% Vitamin mineral premix+0.30% Spirulina from China), T4-(Feed containing 0.15% Vitamin mineral premix+0.15% Spirulina from Myanmar) and T5-(Feed containing 0.0% Vitamin mineral premix+0.30% Spirulina from Myanmar) having four replication in each group containing 10 birds/replication. The experiment was conducted for 28 days (Completely Randomized Design) with ad libitum feed and water. Live weight was numerically higher (P>0.05) in T4 in 4th weeks of age. Lower feed intake observed in T3 and T5 which was mainly 50% replacement of vitamin mineral premix by Spirulina. After end of the feeding trial feed conversion ratio (1.66) in control group was higher (P<0.05) than other groups (1.63, 1.64, 1.59 and 1.61 respectively in T2, T3, T4 and T5). Dressing percentage (63.12%), breast weight (21.22%) and thigh weight (8.54%) were higher (P<0.05) in T4 than all other groups. Concentration of total cholesterol in blood plasma (64.42mg/dl) and serum albumin (1.75g/dl) was lower (P<0.05) in T4. It could be concluded that Spirulina from Myanmar is better than China and 50% synthetic vitamin mineral premix could be replaced by using Spirulina from Myanmar for better growth of broiler. Bang.
