- The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of both alcohol expectancies and time perspective on this risky behaviour in order to allow the development of future prevention programs, by evaluating the relationships between these variables. 2075 high school students were asked to fulfil different questionnaires concerning their consumption attitude, their beliefs on alcohol, and their time perspective. According to previous studies, the sample was classified in non drinkers, social, binge and heavy drinkers. Consistent with our hypothesis, statistical analysis showed that both alcohol expectancies and time perspective significantly differ within these groups, thus being powerful predictors of high risk drinking patterns.

SUMMARY Interest in developing and using novel biomarkers in critical care and perioperative medicine is increasing. Biomarkers studies are often presented with flaws in the statistical analysis that preclude them from providing a scientifically valid and clinically relevant message for clinicians. To improve scientific rigor, the proper application and reporting of traditional and emerging statistical methods (e.g., machine learning) of biomarker studies is required. This Readers’ Toolbox article aims to be a starting point to nonexpert readers and investigators to understand traditional and emerging research methods to assess biomarkers in critical care and perioperative medicine.

The article presents a comparative characteristic of the skin in long-haired cat breeds based on the use of morphological research methods, including anatomical preparation, light microscopy of histological sections, micromorphometry and statistical analysis of the obtained digital data. The general patterns and breed characteristics of the skin in long-haired cats have been established, taking into account its anatomical and topographic features. An inverse relationship was found between the thickness of the epidermis and the thickness of the hair cover in the studied animals, regardless of breed. The specific glomerular design of collagen structures of the dermis was established in all long-haired cat breeds. It has been shown that the depth of the hair follicles and the density of the hair are determined by the topical features of the skin.

A national survey of academic psychologists indicated increasing use of microcomputers for instructional purposes and that such use was unrelated to department size. Apple and IBM microcomputers, the predominant brands, were represented about equally. Software was used most frequently for statistical analysis and word processing. Microcomputers were used most often in research methods and statistics courses.

Midlife crisis in men is seen as a process of intensive and subjectively difficult transition of the self dealing with a reinterpretation of time perspective, the confrontation with death as a future personal event, the re-evaluation of life values and goals, and planning the second half of life. Midlife crisis arises on the relationships between the changing sociopsychological situation and internal predispositions. This study was conducted in Poland, using a sample of 144 men (aged 35–45 years). Measures were the Midlife Crisis Questionnaire, the Time Orientation Scale, the Adjective Check List, the modified version of the Ways of Coping Checklist, and the Value Crisis Questionnaire. The findings indicated that the midlife crisis consists of three relatively independent dimensions, extracted by factor analysis, namely, (i) intensity of symptoms focused on changes in the self-concept, (ii) psychological maturity, and (iii) acceptance of time passing and death. Necessary and sufficient conditions of the crisis appeared to be (1) value crisis, understood as difficulties in hierarchization, integration, and realization of values, (2) emotion-focused coping versus problem-focused coping, (3) past versus future time orientation and lack of goals for the future, (4) sense of time pressure, (5) some conscientiousness, introversion, and openness to experience.

Not much attention has been given to differences among women between the ages of 30 and 60 years when discussing crisis events. 370 women were asked to respond to items regarding midlife crisis, i.e., whether they had experienced a midlife crisis, the intensity of the crisis, and their ability to identify the precipitating event. Most of the 264 women who had experienced a crisis identified “Changes in Self” as the precipitating event. Also identified were work-related events. As in the literature, work is infrequently addressed in this context.
