Abstract: This research is aimed at describing the implementation of teaching reading by using WFR, to describe the problems of using WFR in teaching reading and to know the students’ response of the implementation of WFR. The result of this study is intended to give contribution to the teaching and learning English. The research was done to the second year students of SMP N 5 Banjarbaru. As the sample, the researcher took 40 students of IIA class. The data were collected through observation, interview and test. After collecting the data and analyzing them and describing the result of them by action research procedure, the researcher described the result of the research. The WFR was conducted in four meetings. It is appropriate in teaching reading and helps the students increasing/developing their reading skill. There are some problems faced by the students in teaching learning process: in which most of students have difficulties in arranging the sentence correctly, the students have difficulties in translating the word from English into Indonesian and Indonesian into English, the students do not understand the instruction of the worksheet, and the students have difficulties in finding the main idea of the text. During the teaching learning process from the first meeting until fourth meeting the response of the students is good. They were enthusiastic in every meeting. Evidently, the result of the hypothesis testing showed that the t- observation is always greater than the t-table; in degree of freedom N - 1 = 39 and level of significance 0,05. It means that there is a significant difference of the students’ achievement before and after the implementation of WFR. The conclusion is the teaching reading using WFR to the second year students of SMP N 5 Banjarbaru yields a good result. WFR is appropriate method in increasing the students reading skills and helpful in teaching-learning process.

PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, State, and Test) Method is alternative method to make teaching and learning process interesting. Through PQRST method, the students can participate in the teaching and learning process actively. PQRST method is expected to be effective because the use of it can avoid the weakness of common method that be used in teaching and learning process. The research design used is quantitative and the method is one group pre-test and post-test experimental design. In this study, the data are collected from the result of pre-test and post-test. After getting result of score between pre-test and post-test, the data was couted by using SPSS to find t-test. It is used to describe whether there is significant difference between students' reading narrative text before and after being taught by using PQRST method. It is recommended for the teacher to use PQRST method. It can help them to develop their teching method, especially in teaching reading narrative text. It also recommended for the reader this research hopefully can add the new knowledge which they have not been known before and the last for the further researcher this research hopefully can give new information and references in doing same kind research, and they can improve this research to be complete and better.

The instruments used in this research were reading test and questionnaire. The result from this research shows that using big story book project (BSBP) in teaching reading comprehension is effective. It is proved by the result that there is significant difference between the result of the students’ mean score in the pre-test and the post-test. In the pre-test, the students’ mean score is (43.79) and in the post-test is (80.37). Furthermore, it is proved by the probability value is smaller than α (0.00 < 0.05). On the other word, BSBP has advantages to the students if applied in teaching and learning process, especially in reading subject.

Reading Comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand the meaning. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: Word reading be able to decode the symbols on the page and language comprehension being able to understand the meaning of words and sentences . In fact, students generally feel bored and unmotivated in learning English especially in reading skill because English is different from Indonesian so that the students have difficulty in understanding reading English text. They do not know the meaning of some words in the text. Therefore, the teacher’s role becomes important in the teaching and learning process especially in teaching reading. Therefore, appropriate media should be chosen to motivate their students not only to read the text but also comprehend what they read. One of the media that can be used and applied by the teacher is Composite Pictures. A Composite Picture is a large single picture which shows a scene in which a number of people can be seen doing several things. Thus, to know whether or not there was a significant effect of using Composite Pictures on reading comprehension achievement; Composite Pictures was used as media in teaching reading in this research.

Reading is an important activity to enrich knowledge. However, it is considered as a difficult skill to learn. There are many students facing difficulties in comprehending the content of the reading text, including descriptive text. A strategy which can solve such problems is needed. Skimming strategy is the strategy which enable students to quickly find the main idea and relevant information of the text. Based on those reasons, the research questions are proposed as follows: (1) How can skimming strategy be implemented in teaching reading descriptive texts? and (2) How can the second year students’ reading comprehension ability be improved using skimming strategy? This study used two research methods. Those were qualitative and quantitative research design. They were collected to prove the implementation and the significant improvement by using skimming strategy. Both numeric information and the real observation were evaluated to gain clear and strong data. The researcher acted as the observer to see the process of teaching and learning descriptive texts in three stages. The results of the research showed that the teacher and students implemented four steps of skimming strategy, which are: (1) read the first several paragraph; (2) leave out material; (3) find the main ideas; (4) read fast. The t-test of this research was also calculated to see whether there was a significant difference between control and experimental class and the mean was also measured to see the students’ improvement score. The mean score of experimental class was better than the mean score of control class. However, the t-test result showed that there was no significant difference between experimental and control class.

Teaching reading skill to the students needs applying the appropriate strategy to stimulate students’ understanding to meet the main purpose in the teaching and learning process. It was expected that the strategy itself should be able to be used by the teacher to design the better ways for the students in order to acquire important information. It is realized that many students now need as much information as possible in comprehending all the texts they read. To overcome this problem, the researcher used chunking strategy to improve students’ reading skill. The researcher used true experiment to design this research, then the pre-test was used to find out whether this group in the same level and the post-test was used to detect the progress of the students. The total numbers of the students who involved in the pre-test and post-test were 20. The data showed that the information in the post-test that;  mean score was 70.50, and the pre-test got score was 61.85 then the standard deviation in the post-test was 10.32 and the standard deviation in pre-test is 8.27. It could be concluded that the students get significant progress in their understanding of reading skill by using Chunking strategy in English Department.

Students at schools learn to write in order to express their ideas well. They should have a good ability in writingEnglish texts. However, many students find it difficult to express their ideas in a paragraph, and to make a composition correctly. The media factorseems to be one that makes the teaching-learning process unable to achieve its goal. Therefore, the authors propose to apply Cue Cards as teaching media to overcome the problem. The objective of the research is to scrutinize whether there is a significant difference between teaching writing of biography textbefore and that after being taught by using Cue Cards. This experimentemployed one group with pretest and posttest design was conducted at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 KaranganyarDemakin academic year 2017/2018 insecond semester. There were 34 students of grade XI IPS 1 taken as the sample through cluster random sampling. The datasetsfor this research were collected through written test. Before cue cards were used in the treatment, the measn score was60. After cue cards were used in some meetings of treatment, the mean score is 82. The hypothesis of the research stated that there is a significant difference between teaching writing of biography text on the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1KaranganyarDemak in academic year 2017/2018) before and after being taught by using cue cardsis confirmed. It can be seen from the calculation of t-test, withdegree offreedom (df) = 33, α = 0,05,  t (critical) is ±2.042 and t (obtained) is 8.79. The analysis showed that Ho was denied and Ha was confirmed. Therefore, it is suggested to the English teacherto keep usingcue cardsin teaching writing of biography text.
