Information is the power and Technology is the driving force for the development of all the facets. Information Science and Technology as a field of study and professional practice is therefore responsible for providing information and technology solutions to different organizations, institutions, sectors, fields, and even to individuals. Information Science and Technology is an emerging field and interdisciplinary in nature that has already been gathered from previous sources and chapters. Information Science and Technology is very diverse and treated in different perspectives viz. information, technological solutions, domain-specific solutions, and so on. Regarding the technologies, it also holds wider coverage in tools, techniques, systems, and technologies. Though Information Science and Technology is available with different names there are certain reasons for the development of each nomenclature/ subject. This paper has discussed the issues and suggestions regarding Information Science in its educational and technological context.

Informatics is one of the important branches of Applied Sciences. It is a practicing area and also a field of study. The applications of Informatics in different areas and knowledge field has created various subjects and among these, one of important and emerging is Agricultural Informatics; which is the Information Science and Technology applications in the agriculture as well allied areas. In other words, techniques and technologies of both the fields i.e. Informatics and Agriculture lead the birth of Agro Informatics. The management and analysis of agricultural data with the help of Computing and IT may also be called as Agricultural Informatics. There are many allied nomenclatures of the field, but all are related and closely connected. In short, it is also called as Agro Informatics. Initially, it was treated only as a practicing area in the agriculture, horticulture, and veterinary sciences; but gradually it is a study area with different levels of programs at various universities and institutions, internationally. However, in the developed nation it is more common and widely available. Agro Informatics is an interdisciplinary field and very diverse. There are many features and functions, roles due to its timely need. This is a conceptual and policy-based research hence various aspects of Agro Informatics including its feature, functions, stakeholders, technologies including allied branches are mentioned. The paper also highlighted the proposed and possible programs of this field in academics in the field of Agricultural Sciences, as an empirical and policy research.

This study sought to assess the extent of research collaboration in Library and Information Science (LIS) schools in South Africa between 1991 and 2012. Informetric research techniques were used to obtain relevant data for the study. The data was extracted from two EBSCO-hosted databases, namely, Library and Information Science Source (LISS) and Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA). The search was limited to scholarly peer reviewed articles published between 1991 and 2012. The data was analysed using Microsoft Excel ©2010 and UCINET for Windows ©2002 software packages. The findings revealed that research collaboration in LIS schools in South Africa has increased over the past two decades and mainly occurred between colleagues from the same department and institution; there were also collaborative activities at other levels, such as inter-institutional and inter-country, although to a limited extent; differences were noticeable when ranking authors according to different computations of their collaborative contributions; and educator-practitioner collaboration was rare. Several conclusions and recommendations based on the findings are offered in the article.

To provide junior researchers with domain-specific concepts efficiently, an automatic approach for academic profiling is needed. First, to obtain personal records of a given scholar, typical supervised approaches often utilise structured data like infobox in Wikipedia as training dataset, but it may lead to a severe mis-labelling problem when they are utilised to train a model directly. To address this problem, a new relation embedding method is proposed for fine-grained entity typing, in which the initial vector of entities and a new penalty scheme are considered, based on the semantic distance of entities and relations. Also, to highlight critical concepts relevant to renowned scholars, scholars’ selective bibliographies which contain massive academic terms are analysed by a newly proposed extraction method based on logistic regression, AdaBoost algorithm and learning-to-rank techniques. It bridges the gap that conventional supervised methods only return binary classification results and fail to help researchers understand the relative importance of selected concepts. Categories of experiments on academic profiling and corresponding benchmark datasets demonstrate that proposed approaches outperform existing methods notably. The proposed techniques provide an automatic way for junior researchers to obtain organised knowledge in a specific domain, including scholars’ background information and domain-specific concepts.

Innovation has become a leading slogan for world economies, politicians and science policy-makers alike. It is the driving force of Western consumer societies, which have come to expect the new to be replaced by the newest. However, in contrast to mere fads and fashions, the consequences of relentless innovation are real. They manifest themselves in changes in lifestyle, in the ways societies function and in profound changes in outlook and perception. This paper will ask how innovation became so central and which mechanisms sustain it in science and technology, art and individual life. One consequence to be further explored is the relative loss in importance of the individual creative act, with implications on how we view creativity, knowledge production and even the concept of the individual. Another question to be raised is that of the multiplicity of the new: despite the seeming diversity and multiplicity of option, is there also convergence or a process of synchronization at work?
