The genus Linum L. contains ≈200 primarily blue-flowered species, including several ornamentals, yet no reports exist regarding the cut flower potential of this genus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cut flower potential of perennial flax cultivars (L. perenne L. ‘Blue Flax’ and ‘Sapphire’; Expt. 1, 2018) and accessions (L. austriacum L., L. lewisii Pursh., and L. perenne; Expt. 2, 2019), and record traits that will enable breeding and selection for improved cut flower performance. The mean vase life across both cultivars in Expt. 1 was 9.2 days. In Expt. 2, L. perenne had the longest average vase life (9.3 days), followed by L. austriacum (9.1 days) and L. lewisii (8.3 days). The floral preservative (Floralife 300) significantly increased vase life by an average of 1.7 days in Expt. 1, and 1.6 days in Expt. 2, and resulted in a significantly greater number of flowers (≈2x) in both experiments. Significant variation was observed among genotypes for most traits, including vase life (6.2 to 11.3 days) and number of flowers (1.3 to 10.5), highlighting the opportunities for improving the potential of cut flower perennial flax through breeding.

A broad source of Gerbera × hybrida Hort. germplasm was evaluated for vase life. Senescence mode, i.e., bending or folding of stems or wilting of ligulae was also recorded for flowers evaluated. Intensive selection was practiced to improve vase life. About 10% of the plants from a sample population were selected for having flowers with high vase life. Progeny means for vase life resulting from a topcross between these plants and `Appleblossom' were used to select five plants (about 1.5% of the sample population) whose flowers had high vase life. A diallel cross using these five plants as parents resulted in a progeny population with an increase in mean vase life of 3.4 days compared to mean vase life for the initial sample population. Increases in vase life means for days to bending, folding, and wilting were 0.3, 3.5, and 1.2 days, respectively. Plants with flowers which senesced due to wilting had the longest mean vase life before and after breeding. Changes in proportion of senescence modes were observed; bending decreased, folding and wilting increased. Frequencies of bending, folding, and wilting were compared to vase life means for 10 progenies. Proportion of bending generally decreased as vase life increased.

Hybrids and cultivars of single type tuberose was evaluated to fulfill the need to develop new hybrids as demanded by commercial growers. Evaluation of fifteen genotypes showed significant variation in growth, floral and bulb characters. Cultivar Arka Prajwal was significantly superior over all genotypes, which recorded least number of days for opening of 1st floret (78.55 days) with maximum diameter of spike (1.18 cm), length of floret (6.05 cm), weight of individual floret (3.12 g) and weight of spike (121.43 g).The hybrid genotype L1P4 (Variegated X Phule Rajani) was observed to be superior in terms of rachis length (39.78 cm), inter-nodal length (7.25 cm), length of bulb (8.09 cm), diameter of bulb (3.76 cm) and diameter of bulb-lets (1.85 cm). Among the hybrid genotypes L1P4 also recorded maximum plant height (116.39 cm), spike length (109.58 cm), weight of cut spike (105.08 g) and vase life (11.00 days). However, it was foundto be at par for number of florets per spike (57.25), length of floret (5.92 cm) and number of spikes per clump (10.14) with all other cultivars and hybrids tested. From the overall performance, it was found that the cultivar Arka Prajwal was the best. Genotype L1P4 found promising for loose as well as cut flower production because of its number of florets, inter-nodal length and spikes per clump which are important characters considering loose flower for taking maximum number of pickings. However, characters such as rachis length, spike length, vase life and weight of spike which are imperative for cut flowers are also noted superior in genotype L1P4.

We endeavor through this work to demonstrate the effects of the introduction of neuroeducation data in schools and their application, via an experiment of neuropedagogical methods, to respond to the hypothesis that the contribution of neuroeducation may be beneficial for learning. During this study we designed four neuropedagogical methods and to measure their effect on the learning of students in the classroom we used an evaluation grid comprising six psychopedagogical parameters. The results show that no statistically significant variation of these psychoeducational parameters is observed between sexes. However, a variation is recorded for the four neuropedagogical methods between the groups in pre-test and post at the levels of the mean scores ranging from 5.15% to 440%.

Grevillea is a large genus containing many species, forms and hybrids bearing inflorescences with desirable cut flower characteristics. Nineteen different Grevillea spp. and forms (7), and 39 hybrids (including 11 repeat collections) were assessed for vase life. Longevity varied 3-fold, from 3 days for G. wickhamii to 9 days for a G. whiteana accession. Species with comparatively long vase lives included G. pteridifolia, G. sessilis and G. whiteana. These genotypes may be useful for cut flower production and/or in breeding programs aimed at producing new cut flower Grevillea.

During the vase life of cut stems obstruction of xylem vessels occurs due to microbial growth, formation of tyloses, deposition of materials in the lumen of xylem vessels and the presence of air emboli in the vascular system. Such obstructions may restrict water uptake and its transport towards upwards thus lowering their ornamental value and longevity of cut flowers.Clematisis a very attractive plant material which may be used as cut flower in floral compositions. Nothing is known about the histochemical or cytological nature of xylem blockages occurring in cut stems of this plant. This study shows that inclematis, tyloses are the main source of occlusions, although bacteria and some amorphic substances may also appear inside the vessels. A preservative composed of 200 mg dm−38-HQC (8-hydroxyquinolin citrate) and 2% sucrose arrested bacterial development and the growth of tyloses. This information can be helpful in the development of new treatments to improve keeping qualities of cutclematisstems.

Principal radii of curvature and wall thickness were measured at the apex and three other loci on the free wall of the left ventricle in 16 rat hearts that had been fixed at end-diastolic pressure. The law of Laplace was applied to calculate the mean tensile stress at each locus. No significant variation was found among the nonapical loci, but apical stress was approximately twice the stress calculated for any nonapical locus. The higher stresses that must be borne by the apex may be a predisposing factor for apical aneurysm in certain cardiomyopathies such as Chagas' disease. These higher stresses may also help to promote apical aneurysms in patients with ischemic heart disease.

Popcorn is a popular snack item worldwide. The genetic base of popcorn germplasm is quite narrow, which resulted in limited number of popcorn hybrids. Here, a set of sub-tropically adapted 39 popcorn inbreds of exotic- and indigenous-origin, were characterized using morphological traits and molecular markers for their effective utilization in hybrid breeding. Significant variation for grain popping percentage (GPP: 86.0-98.0%), percent popping expansion (PPE: 1493-3213%) and volume after popping (VAP: 210-315ml) was observed. The mean PPE (2069%) and GPP (93.6%) among popcorn inbreds were higher than the popcorn check variety, VL popcorn (PPE: 1739%, GPP: 92%). Positive correlations were observed among GPP, PPE and VAP. Molecular characterization using 72 SSRs produced 237 alleles with a mean of 3.3 alleles per locus. Polymorphism information content ranged from 0.05 to 0.68, while Jaccard’s dissimilarity coefficients varied from 0.27-0.82. Principal coordinate analysis also depicted diverse genetic nature of inbreds. Cluster analysis grouped the inbreds into three major clusters each having 16, 18 and 5 inbreds. Contrasting inbreds were identified for development of mapping populations to identify loci governing desirable popping quality. The study also identified potential heterotic combinations. The information generated here assumes great significance in breeding for popcorn hybrids.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> The hallmark of the temporal bone is variation. Various important structures like the facial nerve run in the temporal bone at various depths which can be injured during mastoidectomy.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> Twenty wet cadaveric temporal bones were dissected. A cortical mastoidectomy was performed followed by a canal wall down mastoidectomy and the depth of the vertical segment of the facial nerve in the mastoid was determined.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The mean depth of the second genu was 13.82 mm. The mean depth of the stylomastoid foramen was 12.75 mm and the mean distance from the annulus at 6’0 clock to the stylomastoid foramen was 10.22 mm.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> There is significant variation in the average depth of the facial nerve in the mastoid. </p>

Sixty-three genotypes of  french bean was screened against leaf spot (Alternaria  alternata) in sick plots at Research Farm of Dryland Agriculture Research Srinagar, Rangreth during  Kharif  2018 and 2019. The highest mean disease incidence ranged from 0.00 to 85.00 per cent  with  the mean disease intensity ranged from 0.00 to 53.26 per cent .One genotype namely  ‘Local Pulwama’ was highly susceptible in their disease reaction. Among the screened germplasm, ‘Highly Resistant’ genotypes was SKU-R-601, SKUA-R-105, SKU-R-927, DARS-25, DARS-66, DARS-R-615,  while as ‘Susceptible’ genotypes was  DARS-8, DARS-12,  DARS-11, SKUAST-R-155, SKU-R-928, DARS-7, DARS-R-4, Bhaderwah (L),  Local  Kupwara black and Raj Jawala. Local Pulwama was found to be a highly susceptible (HS) genotype.  Twenty nine genotypes namely., DARS-16, DARS-9, DARS-54, DARS-39, VL-125, DARS-63, ENTO-504, SKUAST-204,SKU-R-925, DARS-60, DARS-109, DARS-43, DARS-44, SKU-R-23, DARS-4, DARS-74, SKU-R-105, DARS-40, DARS-23, DARS-18, SKU-R-71, WB-341, SKU-R-605, Uri local, Shopian (L), SKU-R-23, DARS-71, SSGB-729, DARS-R-19 showed resistant reaction to disease. The selection for resistance was based on the reaction of varieties on leaves.
