The social context in the period of Victorian era is a valuable point to study. Those who belonged to the upper class lived wealthily and irresponsibly. One reverse side was that although they were in the high social status, they seemed to be poor in knowledge and tried to act as if they had had profound understanding of everything. In addition, the statue of the Happy Prince was considered a punishment for the leader who had been irresponsible for the life of his local citizens during his lifetime. When he died, he had to witness everything and endured what the local citizens had experienced such as the utter misery and the harshness of the weather. This research is aimed at giving critiques on the social context of the late Victorian era and analyzing deeply the theme of sacrifice through Oscar Wildes The Happy Prince. The Victorian era was known as the era of materialism and individualism in which the luxurious life of the rich was depicted clearly and self-importance was on top of everything and that resulted in the ignorance of the poors lives.

Chapter 2 discusses the nostalgic, cinematic depiction of upper-class society during the cosmopolitan Porfiriato. Although the era has been seen as an oppressive, corrupt, and violent period, this film genre portrays the Porfirian elite. The genre was particularly focused on portraying the female bourgeoisie, a reserved and restricted class preoccupied with marrying well and maintaining a high social status through strict and traditional (especially religious) social decorum and manners. The genre concentrated on women’s positions, the act of coupling, and conservative social mores, all of which were emphasized through musical traditions from the Porfirato. This chapter examines three hallmark films: En tiempos de don Porfirio (1939), ¡Ay, qué tiempos señor don Simón! (1941), and México de mis recuerdos (1944). The performed works in these films intertextually reference both the developing romantic narrative and the social contradictions of Porfirian culture, particularly concerning gender roles, social mores, and conceptions of decency.

Recently, a computational model has been proposed of the social integration, as described in sociological terms by Blau. In this model, actors praise or critique each other, and these actions influence their social status and raise negative or positive emotions. The role of a self-deprecating strategy of actors with high social status has also been discussed there. Here, we develop a mean field approach, where the active and passive roles (praising and being praised, etc.) are decoupled. The phase transition from friendly to hostile emotions has been reproduced, similarly to the previously applied purely computational approach. For both phases, we investigate the time dependence of the distribution of social status. There we observe a diffusive spread, which — after some transient time — appears to be limited from below or from above, depending on the phase. As a consequence, the mean status flows.

Since ancient times, sexism has existed in all aspects of people's lives. Women have always been at the bottom of society. Even upper-class women also have to abide by the principle of " obeying father at home, obeying husband after getting married, and obeying son after the husband died" as the social ethics. After the founding of new China, the idea that "women hold up half the sky" gradually spread. On the whole, the social status of Chinese women has been greatly improved. But sexism is still rife. Especially in colleges and universities, the underlying sexism on campus, in its "normal" form, is ignored. In view of this phenomenon, the author conducts in-depth exploration in the hope of attracting people's attention.

Education function to develop the ability and form the character and civilization of a dignified nation in order to educate the nation’s life. This is in line with the values and norms of Indonesian society is far from materialism, But along with the influx of globalization and modernization, the value and meaning of education is often biased. The occurrence of bias in the interpretation of the meaning of education is caused by social change. research of education bias in Bima community gives an idea how education values can not be interpreted well by a society. Peter L Berger is one of the sociologists who discussed the whole process of social construction. Using the social construction theory of Peter L Berger, it can be seen that the people of Bima undergo a process of social change consisting of; (a) Changes in education patterns in Bima from Islamic education to secular education, (b) Conversion of society’s high social status, related to education which is a social construction process in Bima society about one’s social status. Affluent Americans have disproportionate influence over policymaking and often use their power to advance conservative economic policies that increase inequality. I show that this behavior is partially driven by affluent Americans’ desire for social status. First, I use a new survey scale to show that affluent Americans’ desire for social status strongly predicts their level of economic conservatism. Second, I test my theory experimentally in the context of social media. On sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, affluent Americans compete for social status by sharing curated versions of their lives that highlight their upper-class lifestyle. When I randomly assign affluent Americans to experience this status competition, it causes them to become more economically conservative. The results help us understand the social and psychological origins of economic conservatism among affluent Americans, and provide the first evidence that social media encourages political behaviors that are conducive to inequality.

Abstract Examination of the figurative construction [X find favor in Y’s eyes] ([X ffi Y]) in Biblical and Israeli Hebrew reveals semantic and pragmatic differences in its use. In Biblical Hebrew, the construction reflects an ancient cultural conceptualization (Sharifian 2011) of xen ‘favor’ in which it is associated with the eyes of God or humans of high social status. The distribution of [X ffi Y] in this language emphasizes social and cultural hierarchies based on this ancient conceptualization of favor. Although originating from Biblical Hebrew, the use of the construction in Israeli Hebrew does not reflect the ancient conceptualization of xen ‘favor’ that had motivated its emergence. The analysis shows the differences in meaning and pragmatic function of [X ffi Y] in the two language variants, with a focus on contexts of use and the social-cultural identity of participants. This study illustrates the involvement of cultural conceptualization and scenarios in linguistic expression.

This article introduces high-ranking burials of children excavated in 2015 and 2018 at a medieval cemetery Zeleny Yar on the lower Ob. A detailed description of the burial rite is provided, with special reference to the shape and construction of the burials and the position of the bodies. Burial goods include a hatchet, a scabbard, bracelets, and temple rings. The high social status of the children is discussed. The fi nds are compared with those relating to medieval children’s burials in adjacent territories—the Surgut, Novosibirsk, and Tomsk regions of the Ob. Also, ethnographic evidence concerning the social status of 6–7-year-old boys among the indigenous northern minorities are discussed. Archaeological and ethnographic sources suggest that high-ranking burials of children (boys) appear in northwestern Siberia no later than the Middle Ages.
