This paper explores the role of employment protection when powerful external crises reduce demand for products. We first present a theoretical framework that shows that employment protection has a U-shaped effect on abnormal unemployment during a negative exogenous shock to an economy. Using data from the 33 OECD countries, we analyze how the level of employment protection affected the stability of unemployment rates during the recent global economic crisis. The results suggest that countries with an intermediate level of employment protection will have more stable unemployment rates during a world crisis. The policy implication of our paper is that countries should seek a medium level of employment protection that may act as an automatic stabilizer of the economy on the macro level.

SummaryThe ethanol (EtOH) stability of skim milk and the stability towards aggregation of casein micelles diluted into ethanolic buffer solutions were compared using data obtained from previously published experiments. Differences in absolute stability and in relative response were observed when Ca2+ level and pH were adjusted, the buffer system results lying below those from skim milk in both cases. Increasing the ionic strength of skim milk adjusted to pH 7·0 lowered its EtOH stability whereas increasing the ionic strength of the diluting buffer increased the stability of the casein micelles. The hypothesis is put forward that the differences are due to the simultaneous precipitation of Ca phosphate when EtOH is added to skim milk. This draws calcium from the caseinate sites of the micelle, counteracting the destabilizing effects of the EtOH towards the micelle. Such removal and the consequent restructuring are kinetically controlled and micellar precipitation in skim milk finally occurs when the micellar coagulation time falls within the time scale of the restructuring reactions.

A general description of the trophic inter-relationships and the food web within Bridgwater Bay, Somerset, England, is presented. This Bay is a lower estuarine site within the Bristol Channel. Particular attention is given to the use of the area by fish and larger crustaceans which are the dominant animal groups. Using data collected over a ten-year period of monthly sampling, the relative average biomass of all fish and larger crustaceans found within the Bay is calculated for each month of the year. These averages are used to produce food webs which also show species relative abundance for each calendar month. It is shown that the trophic structure follows a seasonal cycle due to migration. The application of the concept of stability within such a dynamic system is discussed. The role of compartmentalization of the ecosystem into a number of loosely connected groups as an aid to overall stability is discussed. While there is no evidence that contemporaneous compartments exist, it is argued that inter-specific interactions are temporally limited because of the different periods of annual residence of the species. It is suggested that the stability and resilience to interference shown by these estuarine systems is enhanced by temporal partitions.

<p>Tourmaline records the physico chemical conditions during its cristallisation, as its primary chemical zonations are generally unbalanced, its occurrence as alteration product could be used to decipher the physicochemical properties of mineralizing fluids. However, the role of the tourmalinisation in hydrothermal processes remains little studied, if not poorly understood.  The complexity of its thermodynamic properties is related to the presence of four cationic sites allowing the accommodation of a wide variety of elements (Henry and Dutrow, 2018). Moreover the phenomena of deprotonation, Si-IVB and valence state, make the approach of solid solution properties complex (Hughes et al., 2001; Henry et al., 2011; Bačík, 2015; Morgan, 2016). Thus, thermodynamic properties are most often estimated  (Garofalo et al., 2000; Hinsberg and Schumacher, 2007) and only a few measurements could be carried out on a reduced number of near-endmembers crystals (Kuyunko et al., 1984; Ogorodova et al., 2012).</p><p>This study aims to investigate experimentally the stability field of schorl (Na-Fe) – dravite (Na-Mg) solid solution at 2 kbar total pressure between 400° and 600°C as a function of the boron content of the fluid and fO2 condition, using an internally heated gas apparatus. Those metasomatic experiments have been conducted on a mixture of naturals crystals of cordierite + albite, representing a peraluminous granite composition in a Na-Mg-Fe-Al-Si-B-O-H system, characterized by a high-Mg, low-Fe content. These experiments were performed in order to simulate a classic aluminous host of these tourmaline alterations in granitic context. The results will be studied, in terms of stability of the tourmaline species, chemistry variation and texture. They will be compared with thermodynamic models build using data from the literature (Korges et al., 2018; Pan et al., 2019 among others) . Ultimately, the objective is to characterize in a P, T, W/R space, the chemical evolution of fluids, the alteration sequence of rocks and the variations in volumes related to the successive reactions.</p>

The article analyzes fundamental reasons for the world economic crisis in the light of global technological shifts. It proves that it is caused by the substitution of technological modes. It is shown that sharp increase and slump in stock indices and prices for energy resources are typical of the process of technological substitution which occurs regularly according to the rhythm of long-wave fluctuations of the world economic activity. The article rationalizes a package of anti-crisis measures aimed at stimulating the new technological mode. Its structure and role of the locomotive factor of the new long wave of economic growth are revealed.

Research highlights the importance of potato crop, which occupies a prominent food and economic status in food security besides rice, wheat and corn at the local and global level. Despite the expansion of the cultivation of potato crop in Iraq in general and Ameriyah district in particular However, potato productivity remains substandard, this may be due to a lack of knowledge of the most efficient varieties and not to use productive resources at the levels at which technical, specialized and economic efficiency is achieved. Therefore, the aim of the research is to determine the technical, specialized and economic efficiency according to the cultivated seed category. The data envelope analysis (DEA) method was used to estimate technical, specialized and economic efficiency, assuming constant and variable capacity returns. As a result of the study, the Safrana variety achieved the highest average technical efficiency according to the stability of the yield and capacity efficiency in addition to achieving the highest average specialized and economic efficiency, The Lapadia variety achieved the highest average technical efficiency, assuming that capacity returns have changed. Therefore, we recommend the adoption of items that achieve higher efficiency and the need to redistribute the elements of production better and Achieving the optimum levels at which technical, specialized and economic efficiency is achieved and saving what has been wasted.

Using an experimental design approach, researchers altered process parameters and material prop-erties to stabilize the curtain of a pilot curtain coater at high speeds. Part I of this paper identifies the four significant variables that influence curtain stability. The boundary layer air removal system was critical to the stability of the curtain and base sheet roughness was found to be very important. A shear thinning coating rheology and higher curtain heights improved the curtain stability at high speeds. The sizing of the base sheet affected coverage and cur-tain stability because of its effect on base sheet wettability. The role of surfactant was inconclusive. Part II of this paper will report on further optimization of curtain stability with these four variables using a D-optimal partial-facto-rial design.
