This project addresses the publications of a group of renowned authors in order to highlight important aspects to be considered by the Education Master’s Program in Higher Education and Teaching of the National University of Costa Rica as part of its improvement strategies in teacher education, taking into account the most recent tendencies related to internationalization, mobility, accreditation, academic management and shared leadership in higher education. The paper aims to portray a proposal that fulfills the needs of the Costa Rican master’s programs in higher education and teaching by approaching this country’s reality in terms of what the programs offer. It is a bibliographic research paper, which sources have been published for no longer than 10 years and are truly groundbreaking in regard to the graduate program trends that guide this production. Moreover, as part of the contextualization needed, all master’s degrees in higher education and teaching offered in the country are taken into consideration. As a result of this research, it can be concluded that these programs are pertinent, especially the one offered by the National University of Costa Rica, and it is evident that disseminating the program’s highlights and achievements through processes that respond to quality criteria for graduate programs truly needs to be encouraged.

AbstractThe Universities have introduced more or less quickly and success, information technologies and communication in its administrative and educational dynamics over the last two decades.  The proper user of technologies, in addition to the educational administration and learning processes in higher education, can help to improve processes and outcomes in the academic task.  The technology available todays offers many facilities that higher education in Costa Rica can used to continuously improve the services offered and a web service, to help ensure the quality and the pursuit of excellence.  A Web application environment regardless of the platforms which were developed to provide consulting services focusing data to external users, by unifying these applications through universal protocols can generate benefits from its implementation such as: reutilization of work products, integration of applications developed with different tools, flexible data query, external user access immediately to the services provided, human resource savings for these consultations, process automation, quality service, among other focus in their students.  The University of Alicante in Spain provided a web service for the community to and will be used as an illustration to demonstrate the benefit that it would have its implementation on the UNED.  The article considers the benefits that a web service could provide to the UNED, among which are:  streamlining services without required for the student or institution to move to the University offices, opening an e-commerce, improved quality same automation applications, among others. Keywords:  web Service, web applications, protocols, collaboration, efficiency, usability.

The following text describes the historical and operational evolution of inclusive actions in education directed towards indigenous populations in Costa Rica, one of the most vulnerable and discriminated groups in the country. This article specifically underlines how the national higher education and laws have evolved toward acknowledging the inalienable rights of these ancient peoples. The work done by the Universidad Nacional [National University of Costa Rica], specifically by the Rural Education Division (DER, in Spanish), stands out with roving degree courses and trainers of teachers for the General Basic Education being offered in the rural and indigenous contexts where students live. Part of the analysis includes a review of the barriers for accessing the university environment, as well as the role of public universities in democratizing higher education. The conclusion is that Costa Rica has made significant progress in the fields of law, administration, and pedagogy regarding access to education for the indigenous peoples; notwithstanding, these shall not be deemed as concluded achievements concerning the rights of the original peoples as there is a long way to go yet for asserting an equitable offering for them.

Abstract. There is substantial evidence that students in higher education who have sophisticated resource-management skills are more successful in their studies. Nevertheless, research shows that students are often not adequately prepared to use resource-management strategies effectively. It is thus crucial to screen and identify students who are at risk of poor resource management (and consequently, reduced academic achievement) to provide them with appropriate support. For this purpose, we extend the validation of a situational-judgment-based instrument called Resource-Management Inventory (ReMI), which assesses resource-management competency (including knowledge of resource-management strategies and the self-reported ability to use this knowledge in learning situations). We evaluated the ReMI regarding factor structure, measurement invariance, and its impact on academic achievement in different study domains in a sample of German first-year students ( N = 380). The results confirm the five-factor structure that has been found in a previous study and indicate strong measurement invariance. Furthermore, taking cognitive covariates into account, the results confirm that the ReMI can predict students’ grades incrementally. Finally, a multi-group analysis shows that the findings can be generalized across different study domains. Overall, we provide evidence for a valid and efficient instrument for the assessment of resource-management competency in higher education.
