Abstract A construction project is like a living entity and requires the interconnection and coordination of several stakeholders and many of them have their objectives, which sometimes create a conflict of interest between the teams and within the teams. The success of any project is repeatable, and a set of attributes for the success of a construction project can be identified, requiring discipline and hard work. The construction sector is the engine of growth for a nation and supplies services and goods to other industries. The objective of the study is to analyse the enabling factors affecting the performance construction projects in Architecture Engineering and Construction industry. The methodology chosen for the study is to collect primary data from the Indian construction industry using structured questionnaire surveys. The collected data are analysed using reliability and factor analyses. The findings of the study provide the value of reliability, that is, Cronbach's alpha value of (0.86) of the data collected using a questionnaire survey. Furthermore, exploratory factor analysis produced five main significant factors based on covariance between the attributes and grouped into factors such as site management and coordination, leadership and financial management, planning, commitment, and coordination having a variance of 17.65, 11.8, 9.1, 8.5, and 7.5%, respectively. PurposeIt is well recognized that the construction industry is characterised by inefficient and ineffective service delivery due to various causative factors. Thus this study aims to examine the influential factors affecting public construction project performance in Ethiopia to improve the industry's service delivery.Design/methodology/approachFrom the extensive literature reviewed, 58 potential factors affecting construction project performance have been compiled. Based on the evidence accumulated, the conceptual model of this paper has been developed. By using survey questionnaires, valuable data were collected from the construction industry professionals in Ethiopia; analysed and interpreted with the use of both SPSS and AMOS software.FindingsIt is concluded that failure factors related to the “performance” of the contractor, the “capability” of the owner, the “project design-procurement process,” and project contract management can significantly contribute to the poor performance of public construction projects in Ethiopia. Ten key factors include inadequate contractor capacity, weak project site management and supervision, weak project management skills and capabilities of the owner, additional work orders, delayed payment, lack of comprehensive project plans between parties and incomplete project design, rising material prices, ineffective project schedules, and cost management, rising market prices and devaluation of the currency.Research limitations/implicationsThe scope of this study confined to public projects in Ethiopia. It suggests that further research needs to consider public and private construction from a comprehensive perspective in the developing countries.Practical implicationsIt provides practitioners with information and guidance on the factors that affect the performance of construction projects.Originality/valueIt provides inclusive evidence related to many factors that affect the performance of public construction projects.

Cost estimating is one of the most important areas in construction project management.Three are various ways to do cost estimating with different efficiencies and possibly with differentaccuracies. In addition it is a complicated process including various activities. Standardized pricebooks will help improve the process and accuracy of cost estimating. However there is no publishedprice book in the Malaysia construction industry. This research has investigated and identified thecurrent practice of estimating in the Malaysia construction industry together with the possibilities ofintroducing a price book to the industry. Primary methods of estimating, efficiency of the currentmethods, significance of activities related to estimating, factors affecting the accuracy of estimatingare investigated through a survey. Further the obstacles in introducing a price book have beenidentified. The survey participants agree that the government should initiate the introduction of a pricebook in the Malaysia construction industry. The outcomes of this research can be also used to improvethe competitive advantages of quantity surveyors, consulting engineers/architects and contractors inrespect to cost estimating for construction projects in Malaysia.

Quality management is essential to improve success in project implementation by using Industrialized Building System (IBS). The development of construction industry in Malaysia is encountering a relocation from ordinary techniques to a more efficient and automated strategy which is by utilizing IBS.There are a few issues in overseeing IBS construction projects which prompt low qualities such as hiring non-expertize in construction, using low quality of materials and problem with management. Therefore, this paper aim is to determine the various success factors affecting the quality management of construction project that using IBS and ranked the success factors. Found that 87 factors from review papers and two most significant factors affecting quality management in IBS are high ranked which is appointment of high experience technical team, using high quality components and materials with overall percentage 2.48% and 1.86%. However, some of the factors are repeatedly listed due to high affecting to quality.

Every activity in a construction project is related to time and cost. Delay is considered common and often occurred in a construction project. A slight delay can be very costly. It will impact all of the related stakeholders. This paper seeks to identify the financial issues in the construction industry and the impact of the financial issues towards the projects in Malaysia. Literature reviews and questionnaire surveys were used to carry out the study. The data collected were analysed via Microsoft Excel and SPSS software. The paper reveals that the withholding of payment by the approval parties is the critical financial issues in Malaysia’s construction industry, while the main impact when the financial issues occurs is where the project is delayed/postponed/terminated. The findings of this research will give a good insight to the industry and help to improve the local players’ competitive capabilities as highlighted by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in the Construction Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020 and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that was introduced by the United Nations (UN).

There are many factors that contribute to the causes of schedule overruns in construction projects. This ranges from factors inherent in the technology and its management, to those resulting from the physical, social, and financial environment. Schedule overruns can give rise to disruption of work and loss of productivity, late completion of project, increased time related costs and third party claims and abandonment or termination of contract. Schedule overruns are costly and often result in disputes and claims. Hence, the need to identify mitigation measures of construction projects overruns that will bring about the timely delivery of construction projects. This paper assesses the measures to mitigate against construction projects schedule overruns in the Gauteng Province construction industry in South African. The data used in this paper were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to construction professionals in the study area. Data received from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics procedures. Findings revealed that proper project planning and scheduling, effective strategic planning, site management and supervision, amongst others, were the major mitigation measures of construction projects schedule overruns in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the subject of the measures of mitigating against construction project schedule overruns in the Gauteng Province construction industry.

This paper assesses the construction professionals’ perception on the major causes of construction project delays and there consequential effects of on the Lusaka – Zambia, construction industry. This is due to the fact that the Zambia construction industry is a major key sector in the development and economic growth of Zambia. Despite this belief, the industry has not escaped the challenges facing other countries worldwide in terms of construction projects performance with regards to the delivery of projects on time as stipulated in the contracts. Data used in this study were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary data was collected through a detailed review of related literature. The primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire survey, distributed to construction professionals, who include: architects, quantity surveyors, builders, civil engineers, land surveyors and project managers. Out of the 50 questionnaires sent out, 32 were received back representing 64% response rate. The primary data from the questionnaires was analyzed using descriptive statistics procedures. Hence, findings from the study revealed that delay in progress payments, difficulties in financing projects by the contractor, delay in approving major changes in the scope of work amongst others, were the major causes of construction delays. The study also revealed that extension of project time and cost over runs are the two major effects of construction project delays in Lusaka, Zambia. The study contributes to the body of knowledge on the subject of the causes and the effects of delay construction project delays in Lusaka, Zambia.

The Malaysian construction industry has been long categorized as one of the riskiest industries due to the high number of accidents that happened at construction sites. The poor safety performance in the construction industry has caused several drawbacks and failures in the aspects of project performance, cost, project completion time, and productivity. One of the reasons that led to this situation is due to the inadequate awareness of the project safety performance factors. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the significant factors affecting the safety performance of construction projects, based on the perceptions of safety personnel. Fifty-six (56) questionnaires were distributed among construction safety personnel who are working at construction sites in Kuala Lumpur through email and face-to-face methods. The percentage of the returned questionnaire was 100%. The questionnaire was analyzed using the Average Index (AI) analysis to attain the significant factors that affect the safety performance of construction projects. The findings revealed that among significant factors that affect safety performance on the construction project through project level and organization level were safety training, safety rules and safety induction, and performance monitoring. The outcomes of the study could assist relevant parties especially contractors to avoid accidents occur and have a systematic improvement on safety performance indicators at the construction project.

Purpose – The purpose of the research discussed in this paper is to ascertain the perception, from the project manager's viewpoint, of factors affecting construction productivity in the State of Queensland, Australia. Design/methodology/approach – The research was conducted by a structured questionnaire that was sent to 89 randomly selected construction project managers in Queensland, Australia. This questionnaire requested background information about the respondents and then sought a score, using a 0-4 Likert scale, from each of them with respect to the importance of 47 factors identified from the literature that were considered likely to affect construction productivity. The factors were stratified into primary factors and secondary factors contributing to three of the primary factors. There were 36 responses. These factors were rated by the respondents and then ranked using a relative importance index approach. Findings – The research evaluated the relative importance of the primary factors with respect to their effect on construction productivity. The 15 highest ranking factors are discussed. Three factors – rework, poor supervisor competency, and incomplete drawings – were ranked as having a strong effect on construction productivity. There was also an analysis of the secondary factors in relation to three of the primary factors. Research limitations/implications – The research focused on the State of Queensland in Australia. It had a response rate of 40 per cent. It provides insight into the factors affecting productivity on construction projects in Australia. Further research to investigate the identified factors in depth, using targeted interviews of expert project management professionals, is currently being undertaken. Practical implications – The construction industry can use the findings in this paper as a basis for improving the productivity of construction projects. Originality/value – This research is original research, which has highlighted a number of key areas of which construction productivity can be improved.

UAE construction industry frequently faces poor cost performance which commonly known as cost overrun problem. This problem is resulted from several factors and it is important to identify these cost overrun factors in order to avoid and minimize it. Hence, this paper focused on determined the relevancy of factors affecting cost performance in construction projects of UAE. Through a review of past research works conducted globally, 27 factors of cost overrun were listed and used for developing a structured questionnaire. A survey was conducted with 33 practitioners from client, consultant and contractors organizations involved in handling construction projects in UAE. The respondents were requested to state their perception regarding the relevancy of each of the factors that was perceived in context with cost overrun issue using 5-points Likert scale. The responses were analysed using average index method and the results found that all the 27 factors are relevant with construction industry of UAE in causing cost overrun. These factors can be used for further investigation to uncover critical problems of cost overrun.

Quality management is considered one of the most important obstacles facing the construction industry in Sudan. The application of a quality assessment system contributes to the development of quality in projects as it is possible to measure the quality in projects. This paper aims to introduce one of the quality assessment systems, which is the system followed and applied in the Singapore (CONQUAS). This system assesses quality based on structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical work. The paper also aims to study the factors affecting the application of the quality assessment system in Sudan. The study is carried out in the region of Khartoum. The study is focusing on the construction projects. The study is carried out by questionnaires and other literature review. The respondents are consultants and contractors. The data has been distributed and analyzed by using the Average Index. From the study it was found that CONQUAS standard is assessed the building based on workmanship standards by the assessors from the BCA on site using standard score sheets. The assessment is done throughout the construction process for structural, mechanical and electrical works, and from questionnaire results the main factors affect construction industry in Sudan is lack of standardization in Sudan. The author recommended that more study shall be conducted to identify factors affecting quality in Sudanese construction industry and how to improve the quality.
