The projects selected for this publication show a range of approaches to making energy, carbon emissions, and their underpinning principles explicit in studio design work. We hope the selection not only inspires and stimulates, but also encourages both novice and expert in their search for future-proof architectures. Without a doubt, we are convinced that now is the time to challenge conventional norms and explore the potentials of such principles, not only to elevate design quality in building practice, but to benefit global society as a whole.

This paper focuses on better understanding how design processes affect outcomes in mechanical engineering design. Following a general design research methodology, process data were collected from student design journals and tested for association with design quality as measured by an external evaluation using a virtual design of experiments approach. The results indicate that more time spent on system-level design (including problem generation, idea generation, and analysis activity) and on concept-level problem definition activity associate positively with design quality, while more time spent on concept-level idea generation, detailed design, and refinement associated negatively with design quality. These results imply that student designers should emphasize problem definition, information gathering, and system-level design work more so than high-level idea generation activities.

Install thrust propeller and wings to coaxial helicopter, constitute a compound helicopter. Compound helicopter has greater speed, farther voyage, while retaining advantages of the helicopter which can take off and land vertically without runway.Preliminary design is an important stage in compound helicopter design work. It covers aerodynamic analysis, flight mechanics analysis, dynamic analysis, flight performance calculation and weight characteristics calculation. These aspects intertwined, which deepened the complexity of the preliminary design. Use genetic algorithms to optimize the design of the general parameters. Under constraint conditions of meeting flight performance requirements, calculate the general parameters which make the objective function optimal. Objective functions usually include weight efficiency and Miri’s criterion. This method without repeated design can shorten development cycle, improve economy and ensure design quality.
