The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, to study the effect of potassium on yield, quality and shelf life of tomato under ambient condition during 15 October 2015 to 30 June 2016. Six levels of K viz., 0, 35, 70, 105, 140 and 175 kg/ha consisted of the treatments of the experiment. The tomato plant treated with K105 produced maximum plant height (128.50 cm), number of fruits plant-1 (26.49), fruit diameter (5.71 cm), fruit length (5.83 cm), weight of fruits plant-1 (1.72 kg), fruit yield ha-1(71.96 ton), dry matter (7.56 %), firmness (1.22 N), shelf life (15 days), TSS (10.30 %), β carotene (0.090 mg/100 g), ascorbic acid (26.49 mg/100 g) and total sugar (5.05 %). Contents of iron (123.20 ppm), calcium (0.42%) and potassium (0.71%) were recorded maximum in K140, K35 and K175 respectively. Iron and potassium content increased with the increasing level of potassium but reverse effect was found in case of calcium. The regression equation for applied K were Y=-3.339x2 + 636.5x + 42606. Based on this equation, the optimum dose of K for tomato was 95.31 kg ha-1 in salna series of shallow red brown terrace soil and its corresponding yield is 71.96 t ha-1. Bangladesh J. Agril. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of packaging materials on the quality and shelf life of country bean (Lablab niger) using passive modification of modified atmosphere packaging system. The modified atmosphere was created by making perforation in the packets made by polypropylene. Bean pre-treated with chlorine water and then packaging in selected polypropylene resulted substantial reduction in losses caused by weight loss and rotting/shriveling. These treatment combinations also considerably retained vitamin C, β-carotene, moisture content, etc. Under this condition, the retention of quality and shelf life of bean could be extended upto 8 days at ambient condition as compared to non-treated and without packaging. The modified atmosphere was created by making perforation in the polypropylene packets. Green chili pre-treated with chlorine water and then packaging in 0.3% perforated polypropylene packet resulted substantial reduction of weight loss and rotting/shriveling. These treatment combinations also considerably retained vitamin C, ß-carotene, moisture content, etc. Under this condition the retention of quality and shelf life of green chili could be extended up to 10 days at ambient condition as compared to non-treated and without packaging. Abstract The adoption of melon hybrids by the productive sector necessitates a prior evaluation of the productivity, quality and shelf life of their fruits. Due to the different environmental conditions under which the hybrids are evaluated, an accentuated genotype-environmental interaction is expected to become apparent and likewise play important role in manifestation of phenotypic traits. The objective of the present work was to evaluate melon hybrids in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The adaptability and stability of the genetic values were estimated by the HMRPGV method (Harmonic Mean of the Relative Performance of Genetic Values) for the following traits: yield, and soluble solids (SS) content in the period between 2010 to 2015. In 2017, the more promising melon hybrids from previous trials were evaluated under commercial conditions to determine the fruit’s yield, quality and shelf life. The predominance of the complex part of the genotype-environmental interaction was verified for both yield and SS content. Hybrids HC-02 and HC-11 show promising traits when grown under the conditions of the Mossoró-Assu Agricultural Complex owing their high stability, adaptability, yield, and fruit quality. Hybrids HC-02, HC-11, and ‘Hy Mark’ are suitable as international exports due to their long shelf life.

Five different brands of locally produced biscuits and five brands of foreign biscuits were collected from the market. All these biscuits were  stored at ambient condition (30 ºC, and 60 % RH) for 3 months. The changes in water activity, moisture and their consequences on sensory  qualities like texture, color, flavor and overall acceptance were investigated in every month. Test of packaging materials were also carried  out for each brand of packed biscuits. Moisture and water activity values have been increased with time for all the samples whereas  sensory scores decreased.
