Elderly is not a disease, but is an advanced stage of a life process characterized by a decrease in the body's ability to adapt to environmental stress. Elderly causes anatomical, physiological, and biochemical changes in the body, so that it will affect the overall function and ability of the body. The study aims to determine the picture of independence and cognitive function in the elderly. The study used a descriptive method with a sample of 108 elderly in the City of Kendal Indonesia. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution. The results showed the majority of respondents (81.5%) elderly were categorized as having the ability to independently level and 78.6% had normal cognitive function, 18.5% had mild cognitive impairment, and 1.9% had severe cognitive impairment.  Keywords: independence, cognitive function, elderly

The vicissitudes through which the city of Brno has passed since 1865 are responsible for the fact that the manuscript of Mendel’s published paper is no longer extant, and that the manuscripts of his lectures delivered on 8 February and 8 March 1865, and that of Alexander Makowsky’s lecture on Darwin on 11 January of that year cannot be traced. Volume 4 of the Verhandlungen des Naturforschenden Vereines in Brünn for 1865, published in 1866, in which Mendel’s paper appears under a full title in the Abhandlungen (his name is given twice in the Index as ‘Mendl’), also contains inconspicuously in the Sitzungsberichte a short abstract of A. Makowsky’s paper ‘Ueber Darwins Theorie der organischen Schöpfung’ (pp. 10-18) which is worth attention because of the suggested possibility that it was Mendel’s introduction to Darwin’s work. Makowsky begins by referring to Harvey’s dictum Omne vivum ex ovo , which, he says, was long thought unassailable, argument concerning only whether eggs arose afresh in each mother, or already existed, ‘emboîtés’, from the beginning: the controversy between epigenesis and preformation. Makowsky goes on to say that Harvey’s followers forgot the intestinal worms, other parasites, infusoria, moulds, etc., whose development was unknown but which were said to arise by spontaneous generation. Next, it was proved by Ehrenberg and others that all organisms that produce eggs and seeds arise from eggs and seeds, and not from decomposing plant or animal matter.

A selection of exopolysaccharide (EPS) -- producing bacterial strains was conducted in groundwater adjacent to an old controlled landfill in the City of São Carlos (São Paulo, Brazil). The strains were isolated in P and E media under aerobic and microaerophilic conditions at 25ºC. A total of 26 strains were isolated and based on the mucoid mode of the colonies, 6 were selected and their morphological, physiological and biochemical aspects were characterized. All strains presented pigmentation, ranging from yellow to orange and from pink to salmon, with a shiny glistening aspect in all tested media. Strains Lb, Lc and Lg, which excelled the others with regard to the mucoid mode of the colonies, were selected to be cultured in E medium with alternate sucrose and glucose as carbon sources in anaerobiosis at 25ºC to analyze the production of EPS. Strains Lc and Lg were classified as being of order Actinomycelates, suborder Corynebacterineae. Lg strain was identified as Gordonia polyisoprenivorans and Lc strain did not correspond to a known description and therefore a more detailed study is under preparation. Considering all ecological aspects and the metabolic potential associated with the microorganisms of the environment studied, as well as the capacity to produce pigment and EPS, and the presence of G. polyisoprenivorans, a rubber degrader bacterium, the potential of the groundwater analyzed is evident as a source of microorganisms to be utilized in studies related to environmental remediation.

Violacein is a biotechnologically significant secondary metabolite due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and other properties. Isolation, research, and identification of violacein producing strains are of interest for the development of biotechnological processes, in order to enhance the biosynthesis of this compound. The purpose of the present work was to study the properties of a newly isolated bacterium capable of synthesizing blue-purple pigment. An aboriginal bacterium was isolated from the coastal zone of the Vezelka River in the city of Belgorod. Based on chemical and spectrophotometric studies of the crude ethanol extract, the pigment was identified as violacein, and the isolate was assigned to the group of violacein-forming bacteria, which includes bacteria of the genera Chromobacterium, Iodobacter, Janthinobacterium, Duganella, Collimonas, and Massilia. Based on cultural, morphological, tinctorial, physiological, and biochemical properties, as well as analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, the new isolated strain was assigned to the genus Janthinobacterium. The isolated strain is capable of suppressing the growth of a number of fungal and bacterial phytopathogens. For representatives of the genus Janthinobacterium, their inhibitory influence on cyanobacteria was shown for the first time.

The Court of Appeals of New York held, in Council of the City of New York u. Giuliani, slip op. 02634, 1999 WL 179257 (N.Y. Mar. 30, 1999), that New York City may not privatize a public city hospital without state statutory authorization. The court found invalid a sublease of a municipal hospital operated by a public benefit corporation to a private, for-profit entity. The court reasoned that the controlling statute prescribed the operation of a municipal hospital as a government function that must be fulfilled by the public benefit corporation as long as it exists, and nothing short of legislative action could put an end to the corporation's existence. In 1969, the New York State legislature enacted the Health and Hospitals Corporation Act (HHCA), establishing the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) as an attempt to improve the New York City public health system. Thirty years later, on a renewed perception that the public health system was once again lacking, the city administration approved a sublease of Coney Island Hospital from HHC to PHS New York, Inc. (PHS), a private, for-profit entity.
