Powder Bed Selective Laser Processing (PBSLP) is a promising technique for the additive manufacturing of alumina. For the method’s success, PBSLP process parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, hatching distance, and scanning strategies need to be investigated. This paper focuses on studying the scanning strategies’ effects on the PBSLP of alumina numerically and experimentally. Scanning strategies such as linear with different orientation, concentric, and islands were investigated. A numerical model was developed in which the PBSLP parameters, scanning strategy effects, and interpreting the experimental results could be observed. The numerical model proved its ability to reach the proper process parameters instead of using experimental trails which are time and cost consuming. For relative density, the island strategy succeeded to print alumina samples with a high relative density reaching 87.8%. However, there are round passages formed inside the samples that remain a barrier for the island strategy to be effectively used in PBSLP of alumina. Both linear and concentric strategies achieved a relative density of 75% and 67%, respectively. Considering the top surface roughness, samples printed with linear strategies gave low top surface roughness compared to the island and concentric strategies. Linear-45° is considered the effective strategy among the studied strategies as it achieved good relative density and low roughness at top and side surfaces. For PBSLP of alumina, new scanning strategies should be considered, and this study presents a new scanning strategy that is mainly based on space filling mathematical curves and should be studied in future work.

Three-dimensional printing used to be a rapid prototyping process, but nowadays it is establishing as an additive manufacturing (AM) process. One of these AM techniques is selective laser sintering (SLS), which most often involves partial melting of the particles and therefore belongs to the category of powder bed fusion processes. Much progress has been made in this field by research on process parameters like laser power, hatch distance, and scanning speed while still lacking a fundamental understanding of the powder deposition and its influence on parts. A critical issue for economic manufacturing is the building time of parts with good mechanical properties, which can be reduced by lower surface roughness due to less or missing post processing. Therefore, the influence of three blade shapes on powder bed surface roughness has been evaluated for PA12 powder with three different grain size distributions by using advanced X-ray micro computed tomography (XMT) and a confocal laser scanning microscope (LSM). Along with those methods, new techniques for powder characterization were tested and compared. Lowest roughness has been achieved with a flat blade, based on a higher compression due to a larger contact zone between blade and powder bed. Furthermore, an anisotropic effect of the mechanical properties resulting from different building directions has been detected which can be explained by varying amounts of solid contact paths through the powder bed depending on powder application direction. In addition, an optimal combination of process parameters with an even compression of the powder bed leads to low surface roughness, complementing the advantages of additive manufacturing.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can fabricate products with tailored mechanical and surface properties. In fact, surface texture, roughness, pore size, the resulting fractional density, and microhardness highly depend on the processing conditions, which are very difficult to deal with. Therefore, this paper aims at investigating the relevance of the volumetric energy density (VED) that is a concise index of some governing factors with a potential operational use. This paper proves the fact that the observed experimental variation in the surface roughness, number and size of pores, the fractional density, and Vickers hardness can be explained in terms of VED that can help the investigator in dealing with several process parameters at once.

AbstractAiming at laser powder bed fusion of GH3536 nickel base alloy, the effects of different scanning strategies on microstructure, porosity and mechanical properties were explored. In the aspect of microstructure and micro hardness of the sample, three scanning strategies had little difference; in the aspect of macro mechanical properties of the sample, the slope subarea scanning was better than the helix and island scanning. On this basis, the slope subarea scanning was selected as the optimal scanning strategy to form the G-surface structure, and the compression performance of G-surface was studied. The results showed that: (1) the compression performance of G-surface structure was smaller than that of solid structure, The compression strength of G-surface can only reach about 20% of solid structure: the average strength value of G-surface is 220 MPa, solid structure is 1.1 GMpa; while G-surface structure had a smooth compression curve, which indicated the good energy absorption characteristics; (2) with the increase of wall thickness, the mechanical performance of G-surface structure was also enhanced, while the energy absorption capacity was constantly reduced; (3) with the same wall thickness, the compression performance of sample in building direction (BD) is higher than that in horizontal direction (HD).

Purpose For the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technology, the side surface quality is essentially important for industrial applicated parts, such as the inner flow parts. Contour is generally adopted at the parts’ outline to enhance the side surface quality. However, the side surface roughness (Ra) is still larger than 10 microns even with contour in previous studies. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of contour process parameters, laser power and scanning velocity on the side surface quality of the AlSi10Mg sample. Design/methodology/approach Using L-PBF technology to manufacture AlSi10Mg samples under different contour process parameters, use a laser confocal microscope to capture the surface information of the samples, and obtain the surface roughness Ra and the maximum surface height Rz of each sample after analysis and processing. Findings The results show that the side surface roughness decreases with the increase of the laser power at the fixed scanning velocity of 1,000 mm/s, the side surface roughness Ra stays within the error range as the contour velocity increases. It is found that the Ra increases with the scanning velocity increasing and the greater the laser power with the greater Ra increases when the laser power of contour process parameters is 300 W, 350 W and 400 W. The Rz maintain growth with the contour scanning velocity increasing at constant laser power. The continuous uniform contour covers the pores in the molten pool of the sample edge and thus increase the density of the sample. Two mechanisms named “Active adhesion” and “Passive adhesion” cause sticky powder. Originality/value Formation of a uniform and even contour track is key to obtain the good side surface quality. The side surface quality is determined by the uniformity and stability of the contour track when the layer thickness is fixed. These research results can provide helpful guidance to improve the surface quality of L-PBF manufactured parts.

The development of process parameters and scanning strategies for bulk metallic glass formation during additive manufacturing is time-consuming and costly. It typically involves trials with varying settings and destructive testing to evaluate the final phase structure of the experimental samples. In this study, we present an alternative method by modelling to predict the influence of the process parameters on the crystalline phase evolution during laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). The methodology is demonstrated by performing simulations, varying the following parameters: laser power, hatch spacing and hatch length. The results are compared in terms of crystalline volume fraction, crystal number density and mean crystal radius after scanning five consecutive layers. The result from the simulation shows an identical trend for the predicted crystalline phase fraction compared to the experimental estimates. It is shown that a low laser power, large hatch spacing and long hatch lengths are beneficial for glass formation during PBF-LB. The absolute values show an offset though, over-predicted by the numerical model. The method can indicate favourable parameter settings and be a complementary tool in the development of scanning strategies and processing parameters for additive manufacturing of bulk metallic glass.

Although the concept of additive manufacturing has been proposed for several decades, momentum of selective laser melting (SLM) is finally starting to build. In SLM, density and surface roughness, as the important quality indexes of SLMed parts, are dependent on the processing parameters. However, there are few studies on their collaborative optimization in SLM to obtain high relative density and low surface roughness simultaneously in the previous literature. In this work, the response surface method was adopted to study the influences of different processing parameters (laser power, scanning speed and hatch space) on density and surface roughness of 316L stainless steel parts fabricated by SLM. The statistical relationship model between processing parameters and manufacturing quality is established. A multi-objective collaborative optimization strategy considering both density and surface roughness is proposed. The experimental results show that the main effects of processing parameters on the density and surface roughness are similar. It is noted that the effects of the laser power and scanning speed on the above objective quality show highly significant, while hatch space behaves an insignificant impact. Based on the above optimization, 316L stainless steel parts with excellent surface roughness and relative density can be obtained by SLM with optimized processing parameters.

In this work, the effects of line (L-scanning strategy), stripe (S-scanning strategy), hollow square (H-scanning strategy) and chess board partition (C-scanning strategy) on the performances of graphene oxide reinforced Ti6Al4V matrix nanocomposites (GO/TC4) as fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated. Numerical temperature field simulation of four different scanning strategies was utilized to investigate the effects of thermal concentration on SLM-processed GO/TC4 nanocomposites, linking to its micro-voids, surface roughness, porosity, microhardness and tribological properties. The proposed simulation scheme is validated by comparing the simulated thermal analysis with experimental results. Simulation results show that the thermal concentration effects of a part during SLM process is distinctive under different scanning strategies, with the slowest cooling rate of 64,977.5 °C/s that is achieved by C-scanning strategy specimen. The experimental results indicate that the performances of the L-scanning strategy or S-scanning strategy sample are seriously affected by the thermal concentration, causing a large number of micro-voids and defects. All the experimental results suggest that the sample using C-scanning strategy exhibits the optimal performance of all investigated specimens, which closely correlates with its lowest temperature gradients. This study highlights the importance of using a partition scanning strategy during SLM process, which can be easily extended to other powder bed fusion process.

In this work, to study the effect of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 321 austenitic steel, a series of samples were created combining various combinations of L-PBF technological modes, such as: laser spot diameter, scanning speed, laser power, scanning strategy. The possibility of controlling the structure formation of steel in the L-PBF process with the aim of obtaining a given crystallographic texture, grain size and morphology is estimated. The relationship between the resulting anisotropic structure and mechanical properties is investigated.
