To access hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, we propose a sensor based on core-shell iron-nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles. On the one hand, the sensor preparation procedure is simple: syringing the nanoparticles suspension with subsequent annealing. On the other hand, the sensor demonstrates a stable response to 0.05 mM of H2O2 within one hour, which is sufficient for the evaluation of antioxidant activity (AO). The analytical performance characteristics of the sensor (0.5–0.6 A M−1 cm−2, detection limit 1.5 × 10−7 M and linear dynamic range 1–1000 µM) are leads to advantages over the sensor based on Prussian Blue films. The pseudo-first-order constant of hydrogen peroxide scavenging was chosen as a characteristic value of AO. The latter for trolox (standard antioxidant) was found to be linearly dependent on its concentration, thus allowing for the evaluation of antioxidant activity in trolox equivalents. The approach was validated by analyzing real beverage samples. Both the simplicity of sensor preparation and an expressiveness of analytical procedure would obviously provide a wide use of the proposed approach in the evaluation of antioxidant activity.

Aims: The leafy stem and fruit of P.murex have been reported to be used in folk medicine to treat male reproductive system ailments. This study was undertaken to assess the antioxidant potential of the aqueous extracts of P.murex leafy stem and fruit. Methodology: Extracts were prepared by macerating the powder in water. Total phenolics amount were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, flavonoids were quantified by aluminum chloride method and total tannin content was estimated by hexacyanoferric method. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the extracts were assessed through 2,2´-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, reducing power assay, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) inhibition assay and lipid peroxidation assay. Results: Total phenolic compounds, flavonoids and tannins content were respectively equal to 48.91± 1.67 µg/mg Gallic Acid Equivalents (GAE); 56.01± 0.90 µg/mg Rutin Equivalents (RUE); 16.92± 1.22 µg/mg Tannic Acid Equivalents (TAE) for the leafy stem extract while they were equal to 26.26± 0.54 µg/mg GAE; 47.88± 2.39 µg/mg RUE; 7.94± 0.31 µg/mg TAE for the fruit. The leafy stem extract exhibited a more pronounced DPPH scavenging activity, reducing power, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation activity than the fruit extract. Conclusion: The antioxidant activity of the leafy stem aqueous extract was significantly more potent than that of the fruit extract. Further studies will find out the extracts pharmacological efficacy and innocuity.

<p><em>Centella asiatica</em> also known as <em>mandukparni </em>or Indian pennywort or <em>jalbrahmi</em>, which has been used as a medicine in the Ayurveda from ancient times and mentioned in many classical texts of Ayurveda. <em>Centella asiatica</em> has long been used to improve memory and cognitive function.</p><p>The study aimed to identify the phytochemicals present in different solvent extracts of <em>Centella asiatica </em>(i.e. PECA- Petroleum ether extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>CCA- Chloroform extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>EACA- Ethyl acetate extract of <em>C. asiatica,</em> ECA- Ethanolic extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>HACA- Hydro-alcoholic extract of <em>C. asiatica</em>)<em> </em>and evaluate the respective in-vitro antioxidant potentials. <em></em></p><p>The phytochemical screening of extracts was done with standardized procedures and the antioxidant potential of different solvent extracts of <em>Centella asiatica</em> was assessed by its free radical scavenging activity 2, 2-diphenyl -1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as well as hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay respectively for reducing capability.</p><p>In all different solvent extracts of <em>C. asiatica</em> revealed excellent free radical scavenging activity as revealed by 2-2- diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay with  EC<sub>50</sub> values for ECA=128.752±1.85 μg/ml, HACA=274.884±1.21 μg/ml and hydrogen peroxide assay against the standard (Butylated hydroxytoluene) BHT, with the EC<sub>50</sub> values ECA=429.69±0.92 μg/ml HACA=458.08±0.58 μg/ml while rest solvent extracts shown very less antioxidant activity.</p><p> The present study indicates that the <em>Centella asiatica</em> extracts have good antioxidant activity which can be used in stress and anxiety and also a good source to be used as natural drugs.</p>

Objectives: The objectives of this research article are to elucidate the antioxidant activity of the sequentially extracted fractions using solvents with a varying range of polarity from the leaves of Costus pictus (Zingiberaceae). The antioxidant efficacy to combat the oxidative stress was evaluated based on their superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric oxide (NO) scavenging activity of the leaf extract.Methods: Extraction was performed by sequential extraction methods with low to high polar solvents. Using hexane as a low polar, dichloromethane as medium polar, and ethyl acetate and methanol as high polar, based on their individual boiling points extraction was carried out. The extracts were then evaporated using a rotary evaporator under vacuum and stored in the dry container. Then, antioxidant activity of each extract was evaluated for superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and NO scavenging activity, ascorbic acid was used as a standard drug for the study of antioxidant activity. The output was statistically interpreted, and the most significant concentration of the best extract with good antioxidant activity was evaluated.Results: As the methanolic solvent is highly polar and able to retrieve the active lead components from the plant material, was very well correlated with the higher degree of free radical scavenging efficacy. It also exhibited the most and significant inhibition in superoxide radical scavenging, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and NO scavenging which was about 86±1.23, 94±0.34, and 86±1.87 at 250 µg/ml of extract, respectively. The results from our experiments were in par with the positive control chosen.Conclusions: The above results help us to substantially conclude that bioactive components are extracted well in high polar solvents such as methanol, which mainly includes flavonoids and related polyphenols. These compounds present in C. pictus may be an active lead for potent antioxidant activities which would need further investigations in molecular level.Keywords: Costus pictus, Hexane, Dichloromethane, Ethyl acetate, Methanol, Ascorbic acid.

The involvement of free radicals appears to be the feature of most human diseases. The general mechanism of cell damage involves the excessive uncontrolled production of reactive oxygen species resulting in the intensification of lipid peroxidation processes and damaging of macromolecules. These processes are generally accompanied by a decrease in the concentration and/or activity of natural antioxidants. Moreover, the exhaustion of the antioxidant capacity of the organism is among the key reasons leading to the development of pathological states. The maintenance of the prooxidant-antioxidant balance by the systematic use of products or dietary supplements, the components of which exhibit antioxidant activity, can be considered as a part of a strategy for the prevention and control of diseases associated with oxidative stress. The current work aims to study the free radical scavenging activity of two experimental poly-component complexes. Antioxidant properties of complexes were determined in experiments in vitro. The estimation of total antioxidant activity, nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide radical, and superoxide anion scavenging activity was performed. The results revealed that both complexes have the potentials to prevent the formation of free radicals and can be used as agents with antioxidant properties. It was established that the effect of complex 1 and 2 is complex and first of all aimed at the prevention of the formation of dangerous free radicals by reducing the level of hydrogen peroxide. The additional mechanism involves the chelating of metal ions, in particular ferrous iron. The antioxidant ability exhibited by complex 1 was found to be higher than the total antioxidant activity of complex 2. Complex 1 was more effective in the ability to neutralize superoxide anion-radicals while complex 2 showed a high percentage inhibition of Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation.

Coumarin compounds are δ-lactones where α-pyrone ring is fused with benzene ring. Coumarins are widely distributed in the plant kingdom as well as they are very important in synthetic organic chemistry. Coumarins have great interest because of their abundance in nature and diverse pharmacological activities including antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, and anticoagulant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer. This study focused on synthesizing different simple Coumarins and studying their antioxidant activity. Four simple Coumarins (Coumarin (C1), 4-hydroxy coumarin (C2), 7-hydroxy coumarin (C3) and 7-hydoxy-4-methyl coumarin (C4)) were synthesized by using standard methods and were characterized by using UV, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Antioxidant activity of the simple Coumarins was studied by using standard FRAP assay and Hydrogen peroxide assay and expressed as FRAP value (mmol Fe2+/g) and IC50 value (mg/dm-3) respectively. Ascorbic acid was used as standard. All synthesized simple Coumarins showed both antioxidant activities. Hydroxyl Coumarins (C2, C3 and C4) showed higher activities in both cases than C1. Among the hydroxyl Coumarins C3 showed highest hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and Ferric reducing capacity too. Antioxidant power of the tested simple Coumarins in decreasing order was C3, C2, C4 and C1 in both cases. But the hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and Ferric reducing capacity of the all synthesized simple Coumarins were lower when compared to standard ascorbic acid.

Gracilaria edulis is red marine algae currently cultivated in Sri Lanka but relatively low than other country such as China and Japan. This species are used to produce drugs and healthy delicious low calorie foods because of they are primary source of secondary metabolite and to be used as natural antioxidants and antimicrobials. The Purpose of this research investigates effect of different processing conditions on antioxidant activity of G.edulis (Rhodophyseae) by hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity assay. Absorbance at 230 nm, hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays were done. Different processed G.edulis such as fresh, steamed, boiled, dried and microwaved were extracted with methanol. Their antioxidant properties were compared to the L-ascorbic acid which used as positive control. The methanolic extracts of this red algae was prepared keeping methanol as a standard. Methanol was used as control. In minitab-15 statistical software package, Paired T-Test was clearly shown the absorbance, inhibition or hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity depend on the processing conditions of the G.edulis methanol extract. This statistical test did tell about the difference between the different processing conditions of the methanol extract of the G.edulis (p<0.05) and antioxidant activity and these were not independent factors such are depend on each other. Hence antioxidant activity or H2O2 scavenging activity was highly in boiled G.edulis, followed by fresh, microwaved, dried and steamed respectively. L-ascorbic acid was used as Positive control and its antioxidant activity was higher than dried and steamed but relatively lowers than microwaved, fresh and boiled G.edulis. Finally Boiled G.edulis sample was recorded prominent antioxidant activity due to leaching of less antioxidant compounds. In future this study is used to functional product development incorporation of dried followed by boiled G. edulis into bakery Products.

Background: The various industrial processes have a diverse effect on the environment through pollution. In view of these observations, some environmentally benign synthetically protocols have developed under green chemistry. For rapid and sustainable synthesis, the microwave irradiation (MI) has gained popularity as a powerful tool compared to conventional synthesis. The present study describes the synthesis of novel substituted 1, 3-diaryl-2-propene-1-one derivative using alumina supported K3PO4-MWI combination. Objective: Chalcones are important compounds which are widely spread in nature like in fruits, vegetables, tea, spices, etc. The 2’-hydroxy derivative of chalcones plays an important role in the synthesis of bioactive compounds. The present communication deals with a convenient and rapid synthesis of 1, 3-diaryl-2-propene-1-one under the support of alumina-tripotassium phosphate and microwave irradiation. Our efforts are focused on the introduction of typical and easier route for the synthesis of title compounds using a microwave. All synthesized chalcones have been screened and evaluated for the antioxidant activity by DPPH and nitric oxide radical scavenging. Some of these compounds are found to be more potent scavengers and may lead to the development of a new class of antioxidants. Methods: The α, β-unsaturated carbonyl functionality contains two electrophilic centers allowing them to undergo addition and cyclization reactions with different nucleophiles. In the literature survey, we found that Chalcones were synthesized using tripotassium phosphate catalyst under refluxing by a conventional method. A novel method for the synthesis of 1, 3-diaryl-2-propene-1-one via Claisen Schmidt has been introduced by reacting substituted 2’- hydroxyl acetonaphthones with substituted aromatic aldehydes under the support of basic alumina –tripotassium phosphate via microwave radiations. Formation of corresponding Chalcones was confirmed by spectral studies followed by their screening for antioxidant activity. The scavenging activity is expressed in terms of % inhibition and IC50 value (μg/ml). Results: The structures of newly synthesized Chalcones were confirmed and in good agreement with obtained spectral analysis such as IR, NMR, Mass and elemental analysis. Commercially available basic alumina and tripotassium phosphate in combination of microwave were utilized and found to be effective, convenient route for the synthesis of 1, 3-diaryl-2-propene-1-one derivatives with desirable yields in short reaction time (5-12 min). The results of antioxidant activity revealed that the IC50 value for compounds 3a, 3d, 3e, 3f, 3g, 3h, 3j, 3l and 3n are lower than that of standard ascorbic acid to scavenge DPPH radical. This indicates that these compounds are more significant scavengers in comparison with standard drug. On the other hand, compounds 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3g, 3l and 3n are more potent scavengers for NO free radical. Conclusion: We have introduced an efficient, ecofriendly, simple and fast microwave assisted method using basic alumina-tripotassium phosphate for the synthesis of 1, 3-diaryl-2-propene-1- one derivatives. Microwave irradiation provides an effective way for the preparation of Chalcones in terms of several advantages as a simple procedure, short reaction time, milder reaction condition, cleaner reaction and excellent yield. The scavenging activity of chalcones against DPPH and NO free radicals showed excellent properties of antioxidants.
