Since the Olympic Agenda 2020, legacy has been widely used as a justification for hosting the Olympic Games, through which sustainable development can be achieved for both events and host cities. To date, no universal definition of legacy has been established, which presents challenges for legacy-related international knowledge transfer among host cities. To address this gap, a multilingual systematic review of the literature regarding the concept of legacy was conducted in French, Japanese, Chinese, and English. Using English literature as a baseline, points of convergence and divergence among the languages were identified. While all four languages value the concept of legacy as an important facet of mega-events, significant differences were found within each language. This finding highlights the importance of strategies that align different cultures when promoting sustainable development of some global movements such as the Olympic legacy. Sport management is replete with international topics, such as international events and sport for development, and each topic is studied simultaneously in several languages and with potentially differing frameworks and perspectives. Thus, literature reviews that examine the English literature, exclusively, are innately limited in scope. The development of partnerships and resources that facilitate cross-lingual and cross-cultural consultation and collaboration is an important research agenda. More research is needed on knowledge translation across languages.

The education of global citizens prepared to live with each other and one another in a fair, respectful and sustainable way has taken a high place at the heart of education systems, politics and practices in different parts of the world. This document presents a systematic review, carried through a survey of a cohort of articles that portray pedagogical practices of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and/or Global Citizenship of children (three-to-thirteen) in school context. For this systematic review three search phases/stages were performed/took place: a) definition of keywords, b) definition of exclusion and inclusion criteria, and c) construction of three tables that will serve the purpose of data collection for later analysis. A descriptive analysis will be carried out as a way of assessing which pillars of Sustainable Development (SD), sustainability themes, pedagogical strategies and key competences for SD are most representative in reported practices in early childhood education.

Sport is increasingly used as a tool for development and peacebuilding to reach an array of populations (Hayhurst, 2009), including girls and women in the Two-Thirds World (Brady, 2005; Hayhurst, 2014; Saavedra, 2009). However, scholars have cautioned against a universal definition of sport considering its historical link to colonization (Darnell & Hayhurst, 2011; Saavedra, 2009) as well as the promotion of universal benefits of sport for girls (Brady, 2005; Larkin, Razack, & Moola, 2007). Therefore, a postcolonial feminist framework was employed to qualitatively explore how 12 secondary school girls in northern Uganda define sport. In addition, participants in this study identified the benefits that they and other girls and women receive from participating in sport. Semistructured interviews were conducted face-to-face and were transcribed, coded, and thematized by the researchers. Trustworthiness was established by engaging a peer debriefer from Uganda and critical awareness of researcher positionality through reflexivity. Results include how the participants defined sport and physical activity, some as a singular and others as a binary concept, and how girls benefit from participating in sport in northern Uganda. The identified benefits include aspects of health, social life, engagement, opportunities, socioemotional development, and competition. Many of these benefits are congruent with literature from within and outside of Uganda; however, the results also indicate a need for a deeper understanding of how communities define and benefit from sport where sport for development programs are delivered. Connections between the results and the postcolonial feminist framework, study limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ask how two normative definitions of sustainable development identified in the Brundtland report contribute to individual definitions constructed by a network of professional actors working in the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach This paper draws on 74 questionnaires generated from a purposive sample of professional actors working in the construction sector. These questionnaires are analysed using a coding strategy based on pre-defined categories generated from a review of academic and policy literature. Findings The results show that these definitions mostly appeal to actors working in roles with a strong input into the design process. The evidence suggests that all professional actors in the construction industry construct definitions of sustainable development to valorise their professional role, to support professional critiques of the industry or to reinforce their personal ideological beliefs. Research limitations/implications These results present a challenge to a normative agenda aimed at “pinning the concepts down” to an unequivocal, universal definition. It suggests that research might be better redirected towards a context dependent and pragmatic use of the term. Practical implications These findings suggest that future policy making should acknowledge multiple, sector and role-specific definitions of sustainable development. It also suggests that a better understanding of this diversity within the construction industry could improve the efficiency of the design, procurement and construction process. Originality/value These findings provide new insight into the “in use” definitions of sustainable development in the construction industry and question some of the academic arguments that support a single, universal definition of the term.

Abstract Background High rates of attrition undermine the success of weight management interventions (WMIs), but a comprehensive understanding of the factors that increase dropout risk remains absent. This is partly explained by heterogeneity of intervention design, and the absence of a universal definition of attrition. This systematic review aimed to identify the factors related to- and predictive of attrition and retention in multidisciplinary WMIs for adults with obesity. Methods The systematic literature search, conducted in Cochrane, Medline, PsycInfo, and Scopus, aimed to identify original research articles published between February 2008 and December 2019. Articles investigating attrition or retention in multidisciplinary WMIs were eligible for inclusion if interventions were for adults (≥18) with obesity identified by body mass index ≥30kg/M2 and lasted ≥6 months. Multidisciplinary was defined as ≥2 interventionist disciplines or professions, for the purpose of this review. Data was synthesised narratively. Results The literature search resulted in seventeen studies which satisfied the inclusion criteria. Attrition rates ranged from 10% at 3-months to 81% at 3-years. The sociodemographic factors associated with reduced risk of attrition included older age, living in less deprived areas, higher levels of education, and female gender. Poor mental health, low social support, high weight loss goals and poor or unsatisfactory results may increase the likelihood of participant dropout, but evidence was limited and inconclusive because of different methodologies, and only a small number of studies investigating some of the variables. Conclusions The scope for targeted retention strategies is limited because few variables were consistently associated with attrition. Until a comprehensive understanding of attrition emerges, WMIs should seek to reduce social inequities in the benefit of WMI provision. Future research should consider factors reported qualitatively, such as intervention expectations and satisfaction, social support, patient-clinician relationships, and logistical barriers. Adopting a universal definition of attrition and de-homogenising participant dropouts would advance future research. As qualitative evidence is limited, exploring participant experiences of WMIs would help understand how attrition rates can be reduced, and in-turn improve WMI effectiveness.

Much has been written about sport as a tool for development and peace. But more research on Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) organizations, is needed to better understand their actual contributions to the UNs sustainable development goals. Yet, the unstable, risky, and restricted contexts in which many NGOs and SDP agencies operate often leaves researchers struggling to find effective yet feasible methods through which to examine agencies in these fields. Indeed, conducting field work on and with SDP agency often implies allocating significant quantities of researcher’s limited time, funding, and other vital resources. And as limited resources need to be invested wisely, SDP researchers will clearly need to prepare their fieldwork. Nevertheless, there are but a handful of methodological papers that address the question of how to prepare for SDP field work. In other words, the question of how we know if it is worthwhile, and safe enough, to proceed with SDP field work remains. Building on previous research, the purpose of this study is to raise important ontological and epistemological questions about what can be known about a given context, before setting off on fieldwork. We further explore the use of the Actantial Model as a research method for analyzing existing data before deciding whether to conduct fieldwork in complex and frequently insecure situations. In other words, will the cost (material, temporal, financial, and physical) of conducting fieldwork be worth it? By applying the Actantial Model, with the specific aim of informing decisions regarding subsequent fieldwork, to one specific case, contributions regarding the pertinence of conducting fieldwork are provided.

The conceptual and analytical approach to the definition of an integrative base of sustainable development of territories is proposed, which is based on the idea of construction of economic space and creates real conditions for the establishment and deployment of territorial economic integration. It is proved that the effect of the realization of the economic meta space of the state is influenced by the factor of reorganization of the regional map by cascading format of consolidation of industrial-economic, inter-sectoral and interregional interaction. It is recognized that it is expedient to take into account European economic-statistical principles when creating ten territorial economic and economic districts, the format and scale of which will correspond to the key principles of the liberal-social market model of spatial development.

Purpose Within a neoliberal environment, financial vulnerability of households has become an increasing challenge and there is a requirement of financial literacy education, a necessary activity to facilitate sustainable development and well-being. However, this is seldom a mainstream discourse in social work deliberations. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach First, introducing the neoliberal impact on financial well-being and capability for vulnerable households, the authors’ postulation is substantiated on a seven-point argument. The contexts of financially vulnerable households are sketched. Second, a conceptualisation of financial literacy is offered, and third, perspectives on and approaches to financial literacy as a fundamental capability are presented. This is followed by a theoretical foundation of community education as a practice model in social work to develop financial capabilities. In the fifth place, prevailing practices of Financial Capabilities Development (FCD) programmes are offered. Subsequently, the implications of a neoliberal environment for social work practice are examined. Findings The revised global definition of social work encourages the profession to understand and address the structural causes of social problems through collective interventions. As a response, it is argued that community education towards FCD of vulnerable households within a neoliberal environment should be an essential discourse in social development. Originality/value The authors reflect on the significance of FCD, highlighting its contribution towards human security and sustainable development. Although this paper draws on Southern African contexts, the discourse finds resonance in other contexts across the world.

AbstractThis systematic review aimed to contribute to a better and more focused understanding of the link between the concept of resilience and psychosocial interventions in the migrant population. The research questions concerned the type of population involved, definition of resilience, methodological choices and which intervention programmes were targeted at migrants. In the 90 articles included, an heterogeneity in defining resilience or not well specified definition resulted. Different migratory experiences were not adequately considered in the selection of participants. Few resilience interventions on migrants were resulted. A lack of procedure’s descriptions that keep in account specific migrants’ life-experiences and efficacy’s measures were highlighted.
