The survival of Rottenburg University of Applied Sciences (HFR) was repeatedly questioned politically in the mid-1990 s. This had nothing to do with the fact that well-trained forestry academics were no longer needed, but had been triggered by fiscal policy savings. The applied Universities with forestry programs (five) and forestry faculties (four) in Germany are rather small and had no strong lobby like the forestry itself. Unlike some competitors, in this precarious situation, the universities did not opt for a change in their clear forestry profile, but for a broader, future-oriented understanding of modern forestry. For this purpose, they are orientated on the experience from their own past and the discipline, analyse the developments in the industries and sectors that are close to forestry and specifically sought strategic partnerships in order to be able to expand their own field of competence. Thus, the conviction for their own development process originated, that the forestry science has come in its history from the practice, passing a period influenced by knowledge of the general sciences. After that, the universities joined a phase of the development of forestry disciplines, and now they must turn back to the practice again. In this sense, a circle seems to close here and the universities have an additional, important task to deal with: more than before, in addition to teaching and research, the transfer of research results must also be put into practice. At the same time, the process of teaching has to be designed in such a way that it also provides continuous offers for job oriented training. Therefore, the universities must be the melting pot for all relevant influences from other sciences, which are and will be important for the forestry practice. This does not create a new profile, but a broader one. As a result, we are no longer training largely equal graduates, but forestry graduates with very individual strengths, attains, and profiles who fit like different keys into the various locks of practical challenges. This path helped the HFR to safeguard its future, to meet high demand among young students and to be recognized as the "smallest university of excellence" in Germany.

The material presents results of the strategic partnership between JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Finland, and medical colleges of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The systematic annual process of starting the development of new nursing clinical guidelines and of leading and coordinating the adaptation as well as preparing the trainings of national trainers for each set of guidelines has slowed down or even stopped and needs immediate attention. In addition, the development of corresponding evidence-based Standardized Operational Procedures must be organized. Our recommendation is that the Ministry of Healthcare and the Republican Center of Health Development would strengthen the national coordination and create a systematic roadmap for translating nursing clinical guidelines into nursing practice. In addition, nurses’ knowledge and skills in evidence-based nursing must be increased through capacity building activities. This article analyzes the problems of bringing in social media in a traditional, hierarchical organization. Difficulties rise from the contradiction between the bureaucratic approach of an organization and the collaborative community approach connected to social media. A change in the role of a developer is analyzed through a case study. The data was collected in a co-development process of a work unit at a Finnish University of Applied Sciences. The method of this study is analytic autoethnography, which proved to be a valuable tool for capturing a long-term development process and the changing role of the developer inside the organization. A new change agent, a swarm catalyst, is introduced at the end of the article. The initial characteristics of a swarm catalyst are based on the experiences of various, iterative developmental experiments. A swarm catalyst operates within an organization as an autonomous developer, and as a negotiator between the traditional organization and decentralized developmental swarms.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concept of a pedagogical strategy called innovation pedagogy and study how it has been and will be developed. The paper provides a discussion of the changes in innovation pedagogy and, more generally, in higher education, including the changes in educational goals and involving a sustainable future as the priority in all education. The research methodology is based on action research and participatory observation as well as on the experiences of the authors of the development process, which has taken place in a Finnish university of applied sciences during the past 12 years. The study helps to understand how education development takes place gradually and how it can simultaneously respond to the demands of a sustainable future. This paper strengthens the understanding of innovation pedagogy by providing a set of concrete steps to advise how to put innovation pedagogy in practice. The acoustical characteristics of cooling fans are an essential criterion of product quality in the automotive industry. Fan modules have to suffice growing customer expectations which are reflected in the comfort requirements set by car manufacturers around the world. In order to locate dominant acoustic sources and to reduce the noise emission generated by a shrouded fan configuration, numerical simulations and experimental investigations are performed. The working approach considers variously modified fan geometries and their evaluation regarding arising vortex flow phenomena and their effect on a decreased sound pressure level (SPL) in consideration of an improvement or the constancy of aerodynamic fan performance. Particular emphasis lies on the analysis of secondary flows in the blade tip region by post-processing CFD-results. Due to the large number of geometrical modifications investigated and the importance of highly resolved eddy structures, a hybrid approach is chosen by applying the SAS-SST turbulence model in URANS simulations. The SAS (Scale Adaptive Simulation) delivers LES (Large Eddy Simulation) content in unsteady regions of a RANS-simulation and exhibits not nearly the high computational effort needed to perform a full scale LES. An assessment of the actual propagation of noise emission into the far-field is made by performing experimental investigations on the most promising modifications. The acoustic measurements are carried out in a fan test stand in the anechoic chamber of Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences. The aerodynamic performance is measured in a fan test rig with an inlet chamber setup in accordance to ISO 5801. The measured acoustical and aerodynamic performances are validated by the industrial partner. The results of the acoustic measurements are in turn utilized to determine indicators of noise radiation in the numerical simulation. Within this work an innovative geometry modification is presented which can be implemented into shrouded fan configurations with backward-skewed blades. The new design exhibits a reduced SPL (A-weighted) of approx. 4 dB over the entire operating range while showing no significant deterioration on the aerodynamic performance. While the design was registered for patent approval cooperatively by the industrial partner and Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences, further investigations regarding variations of design parameters are performed and presented in this paper. All numerical simulations are performed with ANSYS CFX, a commercial solver widely spread in the industry. Methods similar to those shown in this work can be implemented in the design phase of axial fans in order to develop acoustically optimized fan geometries.

The family-friendly university audit (“audit familiengerechte hochschule”) is studied. The audit is available to German universities in order to support a familyfriendly working environment. Practices of an auditor coordinating several workshops for rectorate, HR department and functionaries, as well as representatives of all university groups are considered. The experience of the auditing at the University of Applied Sciences – Public Administration and Finance, Ludwigsburg is analyzed.
