Globally, companies are increasingly considering the importance of mental health in workers and their relationship with productivity, which has led to increased research on work stress, which showed that there is a relationship between stress related to work and health disorders, both physical and mental. This chapter addresses the analysis of two of the main consequences that a worker can develop when having work stress: burnout syndrome, measured by the Maslach burnout inventory general survey (MBI-GS) and obesity, through the body mass index (BMI). The study was carried out in 118 people who occupy middle and upper management of the manufacturing industry of Baja California, having as objective to find the relationship that exists between the two variables, using ordinal logistic regression, as well as to characterize the sample using mean difference and hypothesis testing. From this perspective, this chapter can serve as a guide to study the behavior of variables and propose organizational development strategies aimed at reducing and preventing these problems.

Mental health disorders resulting from work stressors are increasing in the Mexican manufacturing industry and worldwide. Managerial positions in these contexts are highly stressful, and although physical activity may reduce the negative effects of work stress, the relationships between these two aspects regarding their effects on the body mass index (BMI) of obese managers are scarcely studied. This article aims to study such relationships by using the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) dimensions with the Baecke’s physical activity questionnaire dimensions and analyzing their effects on the BMI. A sample of 255 managers from the Mexican industry, with a (BMI > 30) participated by answering the surveys and providing their weight, their height, and certain sociodemographic information. The research hypotheses were tested using WarpPLS® 6.0 for structural equation modeling. The results for three models featuring acceptable reliability to estimate the direct, indirect, and total effects are presented. The first model showed a medium explanatory power, the variable of job decision-making authority having the greatest direct effect on BMI. The second model showed a medium explanatory power, and the variable of physical activity during leisure-time observed the unique direct effect on BMI. Finally, although the integrating model showed a small explanatory power, both work stress and the physical activity exerted observed direct effects on BMI reduction.

Background: Burnout is a major problem for nursing. There is a strong relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion. Although studies report a negative correlation between the internal locus of control and emotional exhaustion and work stress, the number of studies available on the subject is limited. Purpose: This study intends to examine the extent to which the relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion is mediated by nurses’ internal locus of control. Methods: The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques. The study sample consisted of 347 nurses who worked in a university hospital in Izmir, Turkey and who agreed to participate in the study. The Work-Related Strain Inventory was used to evaluate the nurses’ work stress level, Maslach Burnout Inventory was used to evaluate their emotional exhaustion levels, and the Locus of Control Scale was used to evaluate the internal locus of control. The variables of the study were based on the Neuman Systems Model. Results: Work stress was positively related to internal locus of control (β = .21, p < .001), which was, in turn, negatively associated with emotional exhaustion (β = −.03, p > 0.1). Internal locus of control was negatively related to emotional exhaustion (β = −.14, p < .001). Work stress is directly (β = .87, p < .001) and indirectly related to emotional exhaustion (mediated by internal locus of control β = .84, p < .001). Work stress is directly (β = .87, p < .001) and indirectly related to emotional exhaustion (mediated by internal locus of control, β = .84, p < .001). Conclusion: Although the relationship between emotional exhaustion and work stress was mediated, the impact of internal locus of control was limited. It is recommended that different variables be included in future studies so that they can mediate the relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion.

Abstract.STRESS AND BURNOUT IN TEACHERS OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION OF HUELVA: COPING LIKE PROTECTION FACTORThe aim of this study was to examine the existence of work stress and burnout syndrome in a sample of teachers from E. Elementary and Secondary Education, and relationships with two possible “protective factors, coping strategies and emotional intelligence. The sample consisted of 92 teachers of Primary and Secondary from eight centers Huelva. We used a questionnaire developed for the collection of personal data relating to schools, the Scale for Assessment of Stress (EAE), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the COPE Questionnaire. The coping strategies adopted by teachers not being as useful measures to improve these problems, so it would not act as a protective factor. Keywords: Laboral Stress, Burnout Syndrome, Coping.Resumen.El objetivo del estudio ha sido examinar la existencia de Estrés Laboral y Síndrome de Burnout en una muestra de docentes de E. Burnout syndrome (BS) and obesity are two growing conditions that affect employees’ health and company productivity. Recently, several studies have pointed to a possible relationship between both phenomena. However, such a relationship has not been clearly defined. This research analyzes the relationship between BS dimensions and body mass index (BMI), the latter being treated as a moderator variable among obese senior and middle managers in the Mexican maquiladora industry through a structural equation model. A total of 361 senior and middle managers (124 of them classified as obese under the World Health Organization’s criteria) completed both the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey [with emotional exhaustion (EE), cynicism, and professional efficacy (PE) as subscale dimensions] and a sociodemographic questionnaire (which included BMI). The results showed a statistically significant relationship between EE and PE (P < 0.001; β = -0.320), with BMI acting as a moderator variable. The results showed that when BMI increases as a moderator variable, the strength of the relationship between EE and PE also changes. For example, although PE had a negative value of 0.14 before the moderator effect, the value increased up to 0.32 when the BMI was factored into the relationship. Therefore, maquiladora industries are being advised to increase their investments on the identification and prevention of employees’ EE and obesity. Such interventions would promote a better quality of life and could prevent economic losses resulting from poor employee performance.

Shift work has been linked to health disorders, decreases in workers’ safety and productivity, and poor family and social relationships. However, the relationship between this type of work and the incidence of psychosocial health disorders is not yet well characterized. This study aims to analyse the impact of the shift work in the prevalence of the burnout syndrome, anxiety, depression and stress. A total of 175 workers from the production sector of a metalworking industry, operating in three different shifts (morning, afternoon and night), participated in the study. The burnout syndrome was assessed with the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure and the anxiety, depression and stress were measured through the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS). The obtained levels of burnout syndrome and stress were low, while anxiety and depression exhibited higher levels. Contrary to what was expected, the morning shift presented higher levels of psychosocial health disorders. However, no significant differences were found between the three shifts. These results can be explained by several factors such as the workers’ age, years of work in the shift work and the existence of a second job.

The aim of this research was to determine resilience and burnout levels among nursing students, and to analyze the relationship between these two variables and the sociodemographic profile of the sample. This sample was composed of 218 second grade nursing students belonging to the University of Murcia. Three instruments were used: an ad hoc questionnaire which included sociodemographic and relationship with peers and teachers questions, a Spanish adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The results showed a high level of emotional exhaustion in 28% of the sample, and a high level of cynicism in 19.7%. In addition, the data support the relationship between resilience and burnout in the sample of students analyzed (r Resilience-emotional fatigue = -0.25, r-Realization Personal Resilience / efficiency = 0.52). In conclusion of the study, we emphasize that students who showed a higher level of resilience experienced less emotional exhaustion and greater personal accomplishment. Similarly, the quality of relationship with teachers was associated with a higher presence of burnout syndrome.

Teaching is a demanding occupation, physically, mentally, and emotionally, that, depending on personal characteristics, can have a negative impact on health and personal wellbeing, which can affect the way professors work and teach in schools. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between burnout, engagement, and goal orientation in a sample of teachers from different educational stages. The sample comprised 576 teachers from different schools, both male (N = 244; 42.36%) and female (N = 332; 57.63%) aged between 21 and 65 years (M = 38.55; DT = 12.15). The instruments used were the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey (MBI-GS), the Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and the Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ). The results revealed that task orientation presents a significant correlation with engagement and self-efficacy, and negative correlation with burnout, in line with adaptive behaviors, and that ego orientation is correlated with engagement and commitment. It is concluded that both forms of goal orientation have a positive effect on teacher commitment and that they help to prevent burnout syndrome and also that self-efficacy plays a role in determining goal orientation in teachers in their work assignments.
