Traditional Versus Digital Assessment Methods

Higher education has focused on adopting emerging digital technologies for teaching and learning in recent years. Regarding the technology changes in empowering skills of students, assessment in teaching and learning started to evolve from traditional to more alternative and finally to digital assessment. For example, augmented reality and learning analytics are becoming more popular in assessments. After a comprehensive literature review, this chapter explains the types of digital assessment methods, their advantages, and disadvantages for both faculty and learners. The role of faculty and needs for faculty development are put forward.

This chapter delineates changing organizational responses to the provision of faculty support for teaching and learning in six large Canadian universities since 1997. Various models from centralized to decentralized and from integrated to parallel units are described and their advantages and disadvantages identified. From the analysis, several recommendations pertinent to senior administrators involved in the enhancement of teaching and learning through the integration of digital technologies are provided. In particular, issues concerning the goals and culture of the institution, the integration of pedagogical and technological approaches, as well as involvement of faculty and the role of policy are reviewed.

The impact of the swift evolution of technology has rippled across all areas of society with technological developments presenting solutions to some of society's greatest challenges. Within higher education, technology is welcomed with the necessary caution of a sector that is responsible for educating and empowering the future workforce. The progressive, and more recently accelerated, digitalisation of education causes the core practices and procedures associated with teaching and learning, including assessment, to be delivered in innovative formats. Technology plays a central role in the delivery of e-assessment, widening its possibilities and broadening its methods and strategies. This chapter aims to examine how innovative technologies are shaping and improving the delivery of e-assessment in the context of higher education. More specifically, it examines the role of artificial intelligence, gamification, learning analytics, cloud computing, and mobile technology in how e-assessment can be delivered.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify the contributions of scientific research with a view to overcoming the barriers in the teaching and learning process of the written Portuguese Language for deaf students. Methods: an integrative literature review of the articles published between 2012 and 2017 available in the electronic databases: Capes and Scielo, was conducted. To select the articles, descriptors were combined: Teaching, "Portuguese Language", Portuguese, deaf and deafness. Articles present in both databases, research whose focus was the teaching of Portuguese to higher education deaf students, articles that did not deal with Portuguese language teaching to the deaf, articles unavailable in Portuguese, were the exclusion criteria. Articles that addressed, somehow, Portuguese language teaching to the deaf, complete and published between the years of 2012 and 2017 were included. Results: 133 articles were found, 16 being selected after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. These studies, for the purpose of analysis, were categorized into types, being: experimental, bibliographic, documentary, ethnographic, action research, among others. Conclusion: the deaf still face several barriers for acquiring the written Portuguese language, however, the scholars, from their field of action, propose some strategies which can contribute to overcome them, such as: policy review, early acquisition of Libras, use of digital technologies in the classroom.

Purpose The potential capabilities and benefits that learning analytics can provide are not fully utilized. A current stream of research suggests that learning analytics has more to offer for continuous improvement of higher education institutions. This study aims to explore the opportunities that data analytics stand to offer higher education and the challenges that plays down its role, adoption and usage in different areas of higher education institutions. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a systematic literature review approach in answering the research questions. The critical role of learning analytics and the exploratory nature of research questions justify the use of systematic literature review. The current study used systematic research process adapted and presented by Hallinger (2013) to be used in social sciences in general and in educational leadership and management in particular. A standard process of finding relevant articles and examining reference lists is followed using articles from higher education which is the research context. Findings An examination of the literature showed that the majority of studies within the sample of articles are empirical representing 53 per cent, 32 per cent are conceptual, while only 15 per cent of the articles are a systematic literature review. Results also show that 58 per cent of the articles are teaching and learning related, 34 per cent are management related, while only 8 per cent are research related. Several challenges and opportunities of learning analytics in the three areas highlighted are presented and discussed. Originality/value The benefits and challenges of learning analytics are numerous and scattered in the literature. In this study, a typology related to different educational domains is developed to shed light on the benefits and challenges of learning analytics within particular higher education areas that are relevant to specific stakeholders. Benefits and challenges of learning analytics are classified into being management related, teaching and learning related and research related.

Higher education for the 21st century continues to promote discoveries in the field through learning analytics (LA). The problem is that the rapid embrace of of LA diverts educators’ attention from clearly identifying requirements and implications of using LA in higher education. LA is a promising emerging field, yet higher education stakeholders need to become further familiar with issues related to the use of LA in higher education. Few studies have synthesized previous studies to provide an overview of LA issues in higher education. To address the problem, a systemic literature review was conducted to provide an overview of methods, benefits, and challenges of using LA in higher education. The literature review revealed that LA uses various methods including visual data analysis techniques, social network analysis, semantic, and educational data mining including prediction, clustering, relationship mining, discovery with models, and separation of data for human judgment to analyze data. The benefits include targeted course offerings, curriculum development, student learning outcomes, behavior and process, personalized learning, improved instructor performance, post-educational employment opportunities, and enhanced research in the field of education. Challenges include issues related to data tracking, collection, evaluation, analysis; lack of connection to learning sciences; optimizing learning environments, and ethical and privacy issues. Such a comprehensive overview provides an integrative report for faculty, course developers, and administrators about methods, benefits, and challenges of LA so that they may apply LA more effectively to improve teaching and learning in higher education.

Public sector organizations, primarily higher education institutions (HEIs), are facing greater levels of responsibility since adopting and committing to the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development (SD) and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). HEIs are expected to provide guidance for various stakeholders on this matter, but also to implement this agenda and the SDGs in their institutions. Although the role of these organizations has been recognized, the fields and issues that HEIs should address on their path towards sustainability and SD are still unclear. To provide further clarity, a semi-systematic literature review on sustainability and SD in HEIs was conducted to identify both the key concepts and main research themes that represent sustainability and SD in HEIs and to identify research gaps. This review increases our knowledge of this topic and enhances our understanding of sustainability and SD in the context of HEIs.

AbstractDigital technologies fundamentally transform teaching and learning in higher education environments, with the pace of technological change exacerbating the challenge. Due to the current pandemic situation, higher education environments are all now forced to move away from traditional teaching and learning structures that are simply no longer adaptable to the challenges of rapidly changing educational environments. This research develops a conceptual model and employs Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using Partial least Squares (PLS) to examine the impact of information and digital literacy on 249 Finnish university staff and students’ intention to use digital technologies. The findings show the complex interrelationship between literacy skills and digital technologies among university staff and students. The results illustrate that information literacy has a direct and significant impact on intention to use; while, unlike our expectation, digital literacy does not have a direct impact on the intention to use. However, its effect is mediated through performance expectancy and effort expectancy. The authors suggest that to understand the changes that are taking place in higher education environment, more attention needs to be paid to redefining policies and strategies in order to enhance individuals’ willingness to use digital technologies within higher education environments.

The massive uptake of digital technologies has changed the way how fans and the sports service field communicate and interact. In the current paper, we would like to emphasize the role of technology holistically in sport spectators customer experiences (SSCX) as a "game-changer" marketing in sports and the digitalization of SSCX. In this paper, we aim to explore and qualitatively describe by interviewees verbatim how new technologies impact SSCX. It draws on the literature review, combined with the primary data collected on unstructured interviews with international sport management and technology experts (N=10). It brings sports marketing insights followed by examples from industry professionals. Iterative analysis of data combined with literature review let us achieve to outline the crucial points and trends of technological transformations in sports spectacle. We offer an updated perspective on the SSCX through the prism of the impact of digital technologies and reshaping sports consumption culture. To this end, we develop a conceptual model that captures the nature of modern SSCX influenced by digital technologies.
