Students’ View on Using Online Application to Work on Online Assignment

This research aimed to examine students’ views on using online applications, particularly Edmodo to do online assignments (e-assignment). This study was conducted at Universitas Muslim Maros in the English language education department. Eight students joined as the participants voluntarily.  This research used qualitative research with a semi-structured interview method. Data were recorded then transcribed. The data then were analyzed using thematic analysis. The result showed that most participants were engaged to work on their assignments online. Positive views were given by the participants as they gained effective learning through the online assignment. However, some students felt the pressure when doing online learning. The big problems are a low internet connection and the use of timer features.

This qualitative study aims to figure out the factors that influence EFL learners’ code-switching. In collecting data, a semi-structured interview was conducted in which involved five EFL learners as the participants. Those participants were selected through the purposive sampling method: being second-semester students of the English Language Education Department of Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry, and taking Basic Speaking class. Semi-structured interviewed was applied to collect the data needed. The finding of this study showed that all participants employed code-switching in their class. The reasons for EFL learners’ code-switching were influenced by participants’ roles and relationships, selected topics, and interactions. Thus, code-switching was regarded as a useful strategy that helped the learners convey their ideas to be fully understood and meaningful in the interaction process.

This study is aimed at probing the strengths and weaknesses of classroom management experienced by student teachers at Department of English Language Education, UIN Ar-Raniry during the internship program at designated schools. Data collection was based on qualitative semi-structured interview with 8 student teachers chosen by purposive sampling from the 250 fourth student teachers at the English Language Education Department in 2017/2018 academic year. The findings of the current study indicated that group discussion method applied in the classroom enable more efficient classroom management. On the other hand, it is found that student teachers still experienced great deal of anxiety in managing the classroom. This may cause serious problems when facing real classroom management following their graduation as real teachers.

The success of students in undertaking their studies depends, among others, on their ability to manage and organize their activities and time. This qualitative research examined students’ self-management skills in the English Language Education Department, Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, Aceh, Indonesia. We looked at students’ motivational and behavioral strategies and scrutinized their time management, emotion, effort, and social and learning environments, and the impacts on their academic performance and social involvement. Three areas closely related to students’ self-management skills, namely academic achievement, academic awards, and social involvements were explored to understand factors contributing to their achievement. To gather the data, the researchers used the semi-structured interview with five female students from the 2017/2018 cohort, selected by using purposive sampling with certain criteria, such as their GPA, TOEFL score, and social involvements. These criteria were imposed to distinguish high-achiever students from the average one. Findings showed that students with outstanding management skills adopt motivational and behavioral strategies in their daily lives. Setting goals, finding relevant activities (worshipping, writing, and reading) were mentioned as motivational strategies; while prioritizing, self-observing, as well adaptation to the surrounding environment were crucial in their behavioral strategies. They also practiced positive and supportive illustrations in developing a good self-management system, such as setting up and executing academic priorities and evaluating how activities were done.

The background of the study was the phenomenon of the first semester students of class A English Language Education Department at STAIN Mandailing Natal. Most of them were seldom using English in everyday activity because they did not have enough motivation, adequate vocabulary, and self-confidence. To activate their speaking skill ability, it was used their speaking video recording. By this, they did not only speak, but also involved in correcting, commenting and evaluating their performance in speaking skill. It was productive solution to overcome their problem. The respondents of this study were 15 first semester students Class A English language Education department in STAIN Mandailing Natal. This study was categorized into Class Action Research (CAR). The method of data collection used in this study was form test of speaking video recording which was measuring seven aspects of speaking skill, they were (1) pronunciation, (2) fluency, (3) word choice, (4) structure, (5) self-confidence, (6) teamwork and (7) creativity. The result of cycle 1 showed that the students’ average score in speaking skill was 7.2. In the cycle 2, the students achieved far better average score namely 8.4. It means there was a progress on students’ speaking skill achievement after learning through speaking video recording. The conclusion was the use of speaking video recording was able to improve the students’ speaking ability because they were brave, motivated and interested to express English as the way they wanted it.

<p style="text-align: justify;">Online English comic is one of reading material that can be used by students. Students should be triggered by interesting and understandable reading material to increase their reading motivation and English proficiency. The objective of this study is to discuss the benefits of online English comics as reading materials and to discover the applications and websites that are usually used by students to read online English comics. This study applied the descriptive qualitative study supported by interviews as a data-gathering technique. The results of this study showed the benefits of online English comics as reading materials. Those are adding language knowledge such as vocabulary and grammar, enhancing reading comprehension, building critical thinking, increasing creativity, and developing reading motivation. The second finding is about the applications and websites to read English comics that students prefer to read. There are some applications and websites that are usually used by students to read English comics. The applications are Webtoon and Ciayo Comic, and also the websites include Mangakakalot.com, Mangareaderapp.com, Mangazuki.info, and Mangapanda.com.</p>

Background and purpose: With rapid global development happening in the world today, the field of education has been awash with various change forces. In an effort to ensure its system is globally competitive, Malaysia has taken a step to align its English language education system to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). However, any change in policy is not without problems and challenges as studies have shown that challenges were inevitable and stakeholders’ buy-in on the new change is necessary. Hence, this study was undertaken to investigate the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the CEFR in Malaysian ESL classrooms, their belief on this new reform and their readiness to implement the CEFR.   Methodology: A mixed-method design was utilized with the use of questionnaire and semi structured interview as means for data collection. 365 English language teachers responded to the questionnaire while 15 English language teachers participated in interview sessions.   Findings: The data revealed five challenges namely teachers’ motivation, materials, time, students’ proficiency level and facilities. Despite facing multiple challenges, all teachers exhibited positive belief towards the adoption of the CEFR. The study also showed that although teachers were emotionally ready to accept the change, their cognitive readiness for change however is dependent upon three important facets namely time, collective effort and adequate materials.   Contributions: The study provides insights into the change in policy involving the CEFR implementation in the Malaysian English language education system which contributes to the scarce literature on the implementation of CEFR.   Keywords:  Policy implementation, challenges in policy change, teachers’ belief, Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), readiness for change.   Cite as: C. This study aimed to observe the implementation of infographics in speaking for social interaction course and analyze students' responses toward infographics implementation.  This study used an embedded mixed-method design with qualitative dominant in which the primary component is qualitative and the supporting component is quantitative. This study was conducted in English Language Education Department of Ganesha University especially in speaking for social interaction course. The results showed that in implementing infographics in the speaking class, the lecturer used infographics in pre-activity, whilst-activity, post-activity. The researcher found the use of infographics only once in pre-activity as brainstorming media, twice in whilst activity as the practice for students to know the capability of the students' speaking skill, and the rest of the meetings the lecturer used the infographics in post-activity as evaluation. Additionally, the implementation of infographics in post-activity also got positive responses from most of the students.  Majority of the students stated that the use of infographics was very beneficial in supporting students to speak better.

The study investigates students’ recognition, students’ preferences, and students’ reasons for learning platforms, tools, and activities in the Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) context. The intrinsic case study is used in the present study, which fully expected the quality of improvement and case evaluation can be carried out. The purposive sampling was used with 25 students of third-year class at a private university in West Java at English language education study program. In collecting the data, mixed questionnaire, participant classroom observation, and online semi-structured interview were distributed and conducted during the meetings, then analysed descriptively and thematically. The research findings point out that students positively responded to utilising Google Classroom for written synchronous and Zoom Cloud Meeting for virtual synchronous. To sum up, both platforms are recommended to be utilized in the online atmosphere for ERT. Further actions call for other researchers and educators to utilize them in classroom activities with similar backgrounds and problems. Besides, it is recommended for other researchers to conduct further studies related to the present field.
