The fact that a lot of people in Poland travel by car creates a lot of different business opportunities for the retail sector. Petrol stations are among various entities that attempt to take advantage of this situation. The main purpose of this article is to identify and assess the behaviour of petrol station customers in Poland regarding their motivations for choosing particular facilities and their non-fuel purchases.The study is based on results of a CAWI survey of 603 customers. To make sure that sample was representative, its composition was controlled in terms of the following respondent variables: sex, age, size of the town of residence and province. Consumer behaviour can be affected by a number of factors but only some of them could be addressed in the study, which can be regarded as one of its biggest limitations. Nevertheless, the results provide an interesting insight on this topic. The main contributions of the study include the creation of a typology of petrol stations, identification and assessment of consumer motives for selecting a given facility and information about non-fuel purchases made by customers. The most frequent motives for selecting a given petrol station include convenient location, brand, and the price of petrol and other products. In addition to fuel, customers usually stop to buy coffee and fast food, alcoholic beverages and basic groceries. The authors discuss statistically significant differences between different types of petrol stations in the above mentioned respects. The results of the survey can be of interest to owners of petrol stations as guidance on how to adjust their marketing strategies, especially in terms of the composition of their offering.

The destroyed homes of Tutsi or other “nuisances” [Hutu opponents to the former regime or those who protected Tutsi] appeared as gaping sores in the countryside.

This bed lies from 200 to 300 feet above the level of the sea, an arm of which extends to that town, but no shells are to be found upon its shores. It covers a space of several square miles, and is coated with soil, which in many places has been removed, the shells being taken to mend the roads, as well as for building purposes, and for manure. Such openings upon the surface are frequent on the hill just above the town, on the road to Gottenburg; but a mile or two on that to Wennersburg, and to the left, there is a large vertical opening, exposing to view from thirty to forty feet of the bed's depth, its entire depth being as yet unknown.

This article reflects the importance of the road network for the social development of society and the development of the economy of the country as a whole. On the basis of literary sources provides complex analysis of roads in Ukraine, their current functional state and tendencies of development. It is established that the road industry is in a rather difficult situation due to unsatisfactory transport and operational conditions of the vast majority of Ukrainian roads. Construction of new roads is extremely rare because of lack of financial resources. Road works are usually carried out to preserve the network of already existing roads and to ensure their necessary transport and operational status. According to the results of the analysis, one of the main reasons for the premature destruction of newly constructed or repaired non-rigid pavements is the low strength of interlayer adhesion in the contact area of the newly covered material with the layer below. The effect of clutch durability between asphalt layers on the road strength has been studied in detail. A number of factors that affect the quality of clutch durability between layers are analyzed. It is established that in order to ensure the strength of grafting between asphalt concrete layers of road clothing, it is necessary to strictly observe the technological regimes of their laying, above all temperature; to take into account the physical and mechanical properties of materials at the construction stage and the influence of climatic and mechanical factors, or most often their complex effect on the operation of the highway.

“The apple pie was more than just ‘nutritious, man.’” Despite frequent critical fixation on the jazz aspects of Jack Kerouac's oeuvre, this reconsideration of the author's canon poses food as a central theme of the Duluoz Legend and analyzes the ways in which Kerouac thought and wrote about food as an object, literary motif, and cultural conduit—modes of thought that, despite previous tracing of contemporary food culture to the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, lead almost directly to many current food issues, practices, and debates. Grounded in Kerouac's attentive engagement with the agricultural overtures of Oswald Spengler's Decline of the West, this article discusses how Kerouac understood, played with, and utilized food as a means of cultural comprehension and then—via jazz—cultural subversion within the “decline” of the West, primarily through his novels The Town and the City (1950), On the Road (1957), and The Dharma Bums (1958).

The design of road surfaces involves application of  a sophisticated algorithm system based on mathematical calculations and engineering solutions, with the calculation of evaluation criteria.  It is precisely the observance of the standardized requirements in terms of design criteria that makes it possible to consider the design of the pavement as reliable, and the road as safe and convenient for traffic during the specified service life. When calculating the strength, based on the predicted traffic intensity and the composition of the traffic flow, calculations are carried out according to the main criteria: admissible elastic deflection, shear in layers of non-reinforced materials and in asphalt concrete, as well as the ultimate tensile stresses in cast-in-situ materials with the specified reliability level.  However, in the accepted concepts for  calculating the strength and reliability of road pavements,  only the force effect is directly taken into account. To take into account environmental factors, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive indicator of the resulting impact of all factors. The paper presents a complex of factors influencing on traffic safety, road deformations and irregularities the height of unevenness, in particular, an increase in the dynamic impact on the road and the amplitude of vibration of a car wheel on a road with an uneven surface (when detached from the road surface), the coincidence of the vibration frequency of the car with the natural frequencies of vibration of the road surface, and as a consequence, on the behavioral features of driving. The arguments have been substantiated that the predictive models do not take into account a number of factors that have a significant impact on the formation of irreversible deformation in the layers of materials of road structures.

Abstract One can thus say that in the course of tire tests, all of the experimental conditions, whether they affect more particularly the wear by test period or by wheel position, influence the wear results. Notwithstanding the complexity of these influences and of their interactions it has been possible to verify that a relation existed between the tests on special cars and those made on private cars commonly used by everyday users, and to establish a correlation between the normal road tests and accelerated tests on the track. These studies have shown the importance of the severity of the tests for the estimation of the relative value of the mixtures and it has been possible to evaluate the influence of a certain number of factors on this severity which is, in reality, the resultant of the effects of all the experimental conditions on the wear of pneumatic tires. The variations in relative wear of the mixtures as a function of the severity have led to the thought that a correlation might exist between the practical tests on the road or on the track and the experiments made in the laboratory with the aid of abrasion machines. The existence of such a correlation is very important for it will permit an effective selection of the mixtures, destined for the manufacture of treads, in the research investigations. However, one must still look for a suitable adjustment of laboratory tests in order to obtain an estimation which is directly transposable to the complex domain of the pneumatic tire. This simplification, however, will not bring about the disappearance of road tests for it will, after all, be necessary to make a few practical verifications, be it only for studying the road behavior of the experimental mixtures or their resistance to cracking. This study has been made within the framework of the research programs of the Rubber-Stichting and of the French Rubber Institute, the study being in turn a part of the entirety of the investigations pursued under the protection of the International Rubber Research Board.
