The knowledge industry is credited for accelerating the emergence of global societies where national peculiarities are growingly being replaced by a homogenized global culture. Both theory and research attest that knowledge and innovation is the seedbed of globalization, a widely entrenched concept that has become a typical model of socio-cultural and economic development of the 21st Century. The notion of globalization presents similar and dissimilar opportunities and challenges for communities in different contexts. An awareness of these challenges and opportunities has been at the heart of regional, national and institutional response to globalization. The move towards a Knowledge economy brings to the fore the place of education in any discourse on globalization. Higher education systems (HE) are particularly inextricable themes. Globalization in HE encompasses those forces that push HE systems towards common values, models and structures at regional, continental and global levels. These systems do not only drive and ride on globalization. They are also subject to globalization as evidenced in extant literature. The objective of this article was to discuss the roles of higher education institutions towards a knowledge-based Nigerian economy in the fast changing globalised economy. In achieving this objective, issues that drive knowledge in developed countries and the need for Nigeria to adopt a knowledge-based approach to economic development were examined. Suggestions on strategies for developing a knowledge-driven economy were offered accordingly.

The United States is in a bind. On the one hand, we need millions of additional citizens with at least one year of successful post-secondary experience to adapt to the knowledge economy. Both the Gates and Lumina Foundations, and our President, have championed this goal in different ways. On the other hand, we have a post-secondary system that is trapped between rising costs and stagnant effectiveness, seemingly unable to respond effectively to this challenge. This paper analyzes several aspects of this problem, describes changes in the society that create the basis for solutions, and offers several examples from Kaplan University of emerging practice that suggests what good practice might look like in a world where quality-assured mass higher education is the norm.

With the rise of knowledge economy, the economic development is dependent upon the production, appropriation, profitization, and distribution of knowledge. When knowledge becomes capital, its dissemination in the society out of benevolence of the universities becomes uncertain. It is because the linkages between the economy and the universities’ core activities of teaching and research have become strong as never before, their linkages with the community and society at large have become blurred. By unravelling the national and international discourse on university social responsibility and related constructs, this chapter shows the importance of university-society linkages in the current economic paradigm, reinstituted not just through a few departments and clinical programmes of the universities but also through their core activities of teaching and research.

The concept of governance has become ubiquitous since it is recognized as an important tool for improving quality in all aspects of higher education.In Morocco, few scientific articles have dealt with the subject of university governance. Therefore, we will present a general review of the evolution of governance through laws and reforms established by Moroccan Governments from 1975 to 2019. The purpose of the study is to detect the extent of the presence of university governance principles in these reforms.This study enriches the theoretical literature on the crisis of Moroccan university and opens the way to new empirical studies to better understand the perception of university governance concept in the Moroccan context and to improve the quality of higher education and subsequently the economic development of the country.The findings of this study show an increasing evolution of the presence of university governance principles in reforms and higher education laws.
