Acknowledging the roles and responsibilities of business in society and the importance of realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contemporary management education is characterized by the integration of a rich palette of initiatives in the field of Responsible Management Education (RME). It is important though to recognize that these initiatives, however laudable, so far represent rather basic, and thus insufficient, ways of truly integrating sustainability into management education. This Provocation to Debate essay therefore identifies three perspectives for bolstering RME through the SDGs: (1) addressing the fact that SDGs incorporate trade-offs, tensions, and paradoxes; (2) realizing the SGDs implies engaging in systemic activism; and (3) embracing the SDGs comes with emotional affect. As such, this essay is an invitation to critically reflect on the roles and contents of management education in spurring sustainable development and to engage in a meaningful discussion about the value and the limitations of the SDGs for advancing the RME agenda.

Across the globe a degree in business management is highly coveted as it is perceived to open doors to opportunities and high-paid jobs and India is no exception. However, with the increased inclination towards gaining management degrees and a rapid increase in number of BSchools in the country a big question mark raises not only on the quality of management education and its relevance but also on the acumen of MBA aspirants and students pursuing MBA degrees. The top b-schools in India admit candidates through stringent selection criteria and then impart relevant and contemporary management education. On the other hand admissions in many other institutions are neither stringent nor rigorous and therefore the competency of pass-outs remains a question mark. Management education is facing multiple challenges in maintaining its relevance and keeping pace with changing demands of the industry. Although issues such as the quality of faculty and infrastructure concerns the entire academia but discussions must also take into consideration the quality of MBA aspirants, mushrooming B-schools and loop holes in regulation of professional education. The current paper aims at finding some of the important challenges andissues concerning management education in India in the changing times while discussing examples, lessons and insights from the state of Madhya Pradesh. The scope of the paper covers years from 2008 to 2012.The paper also discusses ‗Sallis‘ quality imperative model in educational establishments in Indian context.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the approach of Frederick Winslow Taylor and an early shop management proponent and Harvard Business School instructor, Henry Hallowell Farquhar, to how management education should connect to business practice. Such analysis has implications both for understanding the philosophical underpinnings of Taylor’s work on shop management and for important dilemmas facing contemporary management curricula. Design/methodology/approach The methodology involves analyzing published and unpublished historical sources including books, articles, letters, memoranda, syllabi and other items on shop management education from Taylor, Farquhar and other Progressive Era educators. Findings The paper provides evidence that Taylor and some early shop management supporters had strong concerns about whether university management programs would help graduates succeed under actual working conditions. The evidence shows that Taylor and Farquhar believed that effective management education required students to have actual plant experience and contact with practicing managers. The interest in educational links to practice related at least in part to whether programs could install proper character in their students. The concern with manager disposition and attitudes related to a contemporary re-evaluation of Taylorism because it shows a humanist tendency to shop management thought that much literature on Taylor neglects. Originality/value The analysis uses a wide variety of published and unpublished sources. It discusses early use of shop management insights in engineering and business programs which are generally analyzed in separate literatures. The discussion focuses attention on the need for contemporary management programs to expand opportunities for practitioner participation in educational development.
