Applications of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis to solid and liquid samples with a pyroelectric X-ray generator are described. The X-ray generator is driven by a 9 V dry electric battery and small dimensions. It enables compact and portable XRF spectrometer. It has disadvantages in low power and periodically changing X-ray flux. Measured solid samples are briquettes from powdery oxides of Ti , V , Cr , Mn , Fe , Co , Ni and Cu , and sulfide of Zn . Each sample is prepared to contain equal molar metal elements. Liquid samples are solutions of Fe , Cr , Zn , Pb , Bi , Cd . K α and K β lines of all metals in solid samples are detected. Although background level was relatively high for liquids, all metals in the measured samples were detected within 70 seconds, except for Cd . The capability of XRF with the pyroelectric X-ray generator is discussed.

Maninjau Lake is a caldera lake located in Agam, West Sumatra. This lake was formed from the volcanic activity of Mount Maninjau Purba about 60,000 years ago. The volcanic material resulting from the eruption is scattered and deposited in various places, one of which is in lake sediments. Volcanic ash contains various types of elements, including heavy metal elements. This study aims to determine the composition and content of heavy metal in the sediments of Maninjau Lake. The sample analyzed was MNJ 18-41B with a core length of 440 mm, focusing on specimens 148 mm and 376 mm. The selection is a specimen based on the magnetic susceptibility value obtained from the measurement meter susceptibility of the MS2E. Specimen 148 has a value susceptibility low of 2.1 × 10-8 m3/kg, while the 376 specimens have the highest value of susceptibility, the highest 141 × 10-8 m3/kg. The content of sediment elements was determined using the results of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) measurements. The measurement results showed that the mineral-forming elements in the sediments of Lake Maninjau were dominated by Si, Fe, Rh, and Zr. In contrast, the highest heavy metal elements are Mn, Fe, Sr, and Rh. Based on the elemental composition and mineral oxide compounds in the sediments of Lake Maninjau derived from volcanic ash.

Geochemistry characteristics of rare metal elements of No.15 Permian coal seam in Changzhi coalfield, such as concentration, distribution, occurrence, and mining value were investigated by low-temperature ashing prior to powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The results showed that the ∑REE concentrations ranged from 19.12 to 268.21 μg/g, with an average value of 91.74 μg/g; the average concentrations of Ga, Ge, and Th were 11.03, 1.96, and 15.09 μg/g, respectively. The concentration of rare earth elements (REEs), Th, Ga, and Ge, are all below the minimum industrial grade. However, the concentrations of rare earth oxides and Ge in high-temperature ash of some coal benches are higher than the minimum recoverable value and are thus potentially recoverable. The vertical distribution of REEs is uneven, with a maximum value adjacent to a minimum value. The source of the different layers of REEs was stable and influenced by seawater. Moreover, the ∑REE, Ga, and Th are enriched with the inorganic minerals and correlated with kaolinite. Ga and Th are also correlated with illite. Significant fractionation of REE is observed during the process of combustion.
