AbstractKnowing the relationship between size, morphological traits and swimming performance of fish is essential to understand the swimming capacity to successfully surpass these obstacles and the selective pressure that barriers in rivers and streams could exert on fish. Northern straight-mouth nase, an endemic potamodromous cyprinid fish species from the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, was selected to carry out volitionally swimming performance experiments in an open channel against three different flow velocities, using telemetry and video cameras. The use of thin-plate spline, on 10 landmarks, evidenced unknown patterns linked to velocity barriers. At lower flow velocity, size is the main factor explaining the swimming performance; thus, large individuals swim up more efficiently. In contrast, at high flow velocities, shape becomes the essential explanatory variable; thereby, streamlined body shapes with a higher relative position of the tail and a narrower caudal peduncle are more efficient. The obtained results show the existence of a relationship between fish morphology and swimming performance, with potential consequences due to selection pressures associated with velocity barriers and their implications on behavioural and dispersal processes. To sum up, velocity barriers could exert a selection pressure on nase populations, so the fishway design and removal should be (re)considered.

Research on stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic has been dominated by the cases of healthcare workers, students, patients, and their stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the relationship between the amount of stress change under the COVID-19 pandemic and demographic factors (age, sex, occupation, etc.) in residents of a large city and a rural area of Japan. A total of 1331 valid responses were received in June 2020 from residents of Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagano registered with a private research firm. We were able to identify 15 statistically significant variables out of 36 explanatory variables, which explained the significant increase in stress compared to the pre-pandemic period. Multiple-factor analysis showed that the relationship with people is a more significant explanatory variable for the level of increase in stress than the difference in environment between big cities (Tokyo, Osaka) and rural areas (Nagano), the type of housing, and the decrease in income compared to the pre-pandemic period.

This paper presents an experimental method to investigate the attenuation performance of stress waves in concrete structures embedded in piezoelectric ceramics. To get the research objective, a series of test were hold. The relationship curve between the frequency and the attenuation coefficient was fit. The calculation method for propagation distances of stress waves with constant amplitudes and frequencies in the concrete medium was proposed. The research results show that the relationship curve of attenuation coefficient and frequency conform to the cubic polynomial function approximately. The attenuation performance for the concrete structure embedded into piezoelectric ceramics is relevant to the frequency, the amplitude and the medium character, and the frequency is the main factor. The research results of this paper can provide an effective evidence for correctly placing transducers.

Friction happens everywhere. Abrasives generated in tribological process will result in secondary wear. Abrasive wear is a kind of rather common but harmful wear, which is the main reason for the damage of fifty-percent mechanical components by friction. Surface texturing is an effective method to improve the tribological and lubricating performance of tribo-pairs. In this paper, with different-size diamond particles added into the lubricant and a surface of the tribo-pairs textured by different parameters (diameter and depth) with femtosecond laser, the relationship between the surface texture and the abrasive wear was researched, and the influence of the texture on the abrasive wear was analyzed. The friction experiments were carried out on UMT3. The microstructures were tested and analyzed by SEM, microscope and White Light Interferometer respectively. The experimental results showed that the size of the surface texture, compared with that of abrasives, is the main factor which determines the friction coefficient. As the size of the surface texture is much bigger than that of the abrasives, the texture can accommodate the abrasives efficiently, and thus the friction coefficient is reduced efficiently.

Background/Aims: Paclitaxel (PTX) is one of the most effective anti-cancer drugs. However, multiple drug resistance is still the main factor that hinders the effective treatment of cancer with PTX. Several factors including YAP over-expression can cause PTX resistance. In this study, we aimed to verify the role YAP plays in PTX resistance, explore the reversal of PTX resistance by verteporfin (VP) and investigate the effect of combination therapy of PTX and VP on the PTX resistant colon cancer cells (HCT-8/T). Methods: To study the relationship between YAP and PTX resistance, a stable YAP-over-expression or YAP silencing cell line was generated by transfected with YAP-plasmids or siYAP-RNA. WST-1 assay was performed to detect the cytotoxicity of PTX on HCT-8 and HCT-8/T cells. Clone formation assay and Transwell assay was preformed to determine the cell proliferation and invasion ability respectively. Immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis was performed for protein detection. Results: YAP was stronger expressed in HCT-8/T than in HCT-8, and PTX resistance was positively correlated with the level of YAP expression. VP, a strongly YAP inhibitor, could reduce the PTX resistance on HCT-8/T cells without light activation by inhibiting YAP. Beside, VP and PTX combination therapy showed synergism on inhibition of YAP and cytotoxicity to HCT-8/T. Moreover, verteporfin and PTX combination therapy affect the invasion and colony formation ability and induce apoptosis of HCT-8/T cells. Conclusions: VP can reverse the PTX resistance induced by YAP over-expression in HCT-8/T cells without photoactivation through inhibiting YAP expression.

The presence of microplastics in aquatic systems is mainly due to the anthropogenic activities such as domestic waste dumping. Undeniably, rivers either in urban or suburban areas are always a waste dumpling sites from the surrounding residences. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between microplastic abundance and different degree of urbanization across Kuching in Sarawak. Three sampling locations with different degrees of urbanisation had been studied across Kuching. A total of 137 pieces of microplastics were collected along the study and analysed using stereoscopic microscope for the shape identification and FTIR spectrophotometer for functional groups present in the microplastics. Filament was the most abundant microplastics shape found, whereas the IR results showed that ethylenevinylacetate (9%), polyamides or nylon (15%), polypropylene (42%), poly(methylmethacrylate) (16%) and polystyrene (18%) were found in the study. The most abundant microplastics in the water samples was polypropylene (42%), whereas ethylenevinylacetate (9%) was the least. The degree of urbanisation does not directly relate to the microplastic present in the river system in Kuching City, but the anthropogenic activity is the main factor that affecting the microplastic abundance in the river.   Keywords: anthropologenic activity, FTIR, microplastics, polymer identification, urban, sub-urban

Background: Modification of food presentation is one way to attract toddlers to increase their appetite with attractive colors or cute shapes to increase the child's appetite. Modification of food presentation can also affect appetite changes in children under five, so it takes a unique and exciting food creation that can be an attraction/pleasure for children under five to increase appetite. Children's stability under five depends a lot on their parents or caregivers because the parents must be the main scourge / main factor in increasing the child's appetite. So, it can be said that the development of children under five is very dependent on how their parents manage their child's food—providing a variety of foods, especially vegetables, which children usually do not like so that they become liked by them. There are many things or ways to attract toddlers to like vegetables, namely by adding side dishes that have been mixed with vegetables and rice that can be cooked and mixed with coloring from the vegetables themselves. Objective: To explore the relationship between food presentation modification and appetite changes for children under five at Puskesmas Mojo Surabaya.Method: Analytical Cross-Sectional Observational Research DesignResult: Most of the modification of food presentation for children under five at Puskesmas Mojo Surabaya received it well. Changes in appetite for children under five at Puskesmas Mojo Surabaya are mostly changes in appetite.Conclusion: There is a relationship between modification of food presentation and appetite changes for children under five at Puskesmas Mojo Surabaya.

PurposeThe objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between leaders' forgiveness and organizational performance using radical innovation as an explanatory variable.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted in a sample frame of 11,594 Spanish companies. A total of 600 valid questionnaires were obtained. The structural equations were used to validate the proposed hypotheses.FindingsResults confirmed the hypotheses proposed in the model: the authors provided, through structural equations, empirical evidence of the relationship between leaders' forgiveness and organizational performance, mediated by radical innovation. Leaders' forgiveness promotes radical innovation and, in turn, performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample of companies is heterogeneous in terms of firm turnover, size and age. The study is focused on radical innovation.Practical implicationsThe present study may help to develop more humane policies to manage human resources, by taking into account employees' feelings and needs.Originality/valueThe business field is closer to competitive values and has traditionally underestimated the importance of leaders' forgiveness. This is one of the few studies that empirically analyze the consequences of leaders' forgiveness within organizations.
