Changes in weight gain, digestive and metabolic enzyme activities in Labeo rohita fingerlings in response to multiple stress exposure and dietary nutraceutical

Aim: The present experiment was undertaken to compare digestive, metabolic, antioxidant enzyme activities and immuno-biochemical responses in Labeo rohita fingerlings to some commonly used phytogenic feed additives. Methodology: Eleven experimental diets were prepared by supplementing fennel, coriander, cumin, fenugreek seed, turmeric, black pepper, peeled ginger, bay leaf, peeled onion bulb or peeled garlic clove meal at 1% inclusion level along with a control diet. Four hundred and ninety-five fingerlings (average weight 6.45±0.01 g) were distributed randomly in eleven experimental groups in triplicates with a stocking density of 15 fish per tank (400 l of water). Results: Turmeric, garlic or ginger meals appeared to be more effective than onion, fenugreek, cumin, coriander, fennel, black pepper and bay leaf meals for enhancing digestive, metabolic, antioxidant enzyme activities and innate immune functions. The physio-metabolic effects of phytogenic feed additives tested in Labeo rohita fingerlings were in the order of turmeric > garlic > ginger > onion > fenugreek > cumin > coriander > fennel > black pepper > bay leaf meal. Interpretation: The enhanced digestive and metabolic enzyme activities, antioxidant function, glucose homeostasis and improved innate immune function through modulation of the haemato-biochemical profile of Labeo rohita due to feeding of specific functional compounds present in turmeric, ginger and garlic meals compare to other phytogenic additives.

Abstract We have evaluated the effects of different fish feeds on the body composition, growth, and enzyme activities of Labeo rohita (Rohu). In total, 240 fishes between the average weights of 24.77±2.15g were studied. The treatments were applied in a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments of 60 fishes each. Treatments consisted of four different fish feeds [Oryza (T1), AMG (T2), Aqua (T3), and Supreme (T4)]. Body composition, growth performance, and enzyme activities were evaluated. There was a significant variation in performance of fishes fed with different type of feed; as fishes having Oryza feed showed the highest weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and best feed conversion ratio (FCR) as compared to other groups that were considered to be significant (P ≤ 0.05). High net weight gain was obtained in T4 when compared with T2 and T3. FCR value of T4 was less than T1 but higher than T2, T3 and T2, which showed the lowest values. The specific growth rate was recorded as average in T4, but T2 led a high SGR than T3. Similarly, crude protein level and digestive enzymes activity was recorded significantly highest in fed with Oryza (T1) as compared to AMG (T2), Aqua (T3), and Supreme (T4). Water quality parameters were recorded significant in all treatments except pH and DO of treatment (T1), significantly different from other treatments. It was concluded that Rohu (Labeo rohita) could show a promising growth rate and protease enzyme activity when fed with the Oryza feed of 25% protein.

The efficacy and suitability of dietary whole wheat flour supplementation was evaluated on the growth performance and survival of rohu (Labeo rohita). The study was conducted in 12 experimental aquaria at the Wet Laboratory, Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. A total of 180 fingerlings of mean initial weight of 1.744±00 g were stocked at the same stocking density (268 fingerlings/m3). Four different treatments (T1, T2, T3 and T4) each with three replications were performed having different level of whole wheat flour such as 0% whole wheat flour (T1), 5% whole wheat flour (T2), 10% whole wheat flour (T3) and 15% whole wheat flour (T4). Feeds were supplied at 5% body weight twice daily in the morning at 9.00 am and in the afternoon at 5.00 pm throughout the study period. The rations were adjusted every week when new weights of the fish for various experimental aquariums were determined. At the end of the 63 days study period, the growth performance parameters such as mean final weight (g), weight gain (g), percent weight gain (%), specific growth rate (%/day) and the best feed utilization in terms of food conversion ratio were found highest at treatment 4 where fishes were fed with inclusion of 15% whole wheat flour and lowest was found at treatment 1 (fed with inclusion of 0% whole wheat flour). Water quality parameters were within the acceptable range and survival rate was found 100% in all treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that treatment 4 (highest growth performance and survival rate of L. rohita with supplementation of 15% whole wheat flour containing diet) can be chosen by fish farmers for commercial culture of this species.
