Effects of dietary supplementation with Ampelopsis grossedentata extract on production performance and body health of hens

Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Pleurotus eryngii stalk residue (PESR) on performance, egg traits and oxidative status of laying hens. One hundred and twenty 22-week-old laying hens (Hendrix) were randomly allocated into 4 dietary groups, each containing 30 birds, including 10 replicates per group and 3 birds per replicate. In addition, they were fed diets supplemented with 0 (control group, corn-soybean meal), 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0% dried PESR groups for 8 weeks, respectively. The results indicated that the different levels of dietary supplementation produced no significant differences in production performance among the experimental groups of laying hens. The Haugh unit was significantly higher in the 1.0% and 2.0% PESR groups compared to the control group. The eggs’ cholesterol content of the 1.0% and 2.0% PESR groups was significantly lower than that of the control group at 5-8 weeks. The blood triglyceride content and cholesterol content were significantly lower in the 1.0% and 2.0% PESR groups compared to the control group at the 4th and 8th weeks. Hence, the supplemented 1.0% and 2.0% of PESR groups showed higher levels for serum trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, catalase and superoxide dismutase during the experimental period in comparison with the control group. This study indicated that a by-product of Pleurotus eryngii, PESR, could produce lower-cholesterol eggs and improve the oxidative stability with 1.0% and 2.0% PESR supplementation in laying hens.

Background: Healthy omega-3 fatty acid (n-3FA) enriched poultry meat can be achieved through dietary supplementation of n-3 FA rich feed ingredients like fish meal, linseed, linseed oil, marine algae, etc to broiler birds. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementing linseed oil (LO) in combination with natural antioxidants like curry leaf powder, ginger powder and turmeric powder to explore the additional benefits of these natural antioxidants in reducing meat lipid peroxidation. Methods: Day-old male broiler chicks (n=150) were randomly allotted to five dietary treatments, namely, 2% vegetable oil (C), 2% linseed oil (LO), 2% LO + 0.5% curry powder (LOC), 2% LO + 0.5% ginger powder (LOG) and 2% LO + 0.5% turmeric powder (LOT) for 42 days. Result: Results showed highest average daily gain (ADG) and best feed conversion efficiency (FCE) in LOG group compared to all other groups. The effect of different treatment was not evident on other production parameters. The omega-6: omega-3fatty acid ratio (n-6 FA: n-3 FA) was enhanced in all LO supplemented broilers. Supplementation of dietary natural antioxidants along with LO did not have any significant impact on meat lipid peroxidation which was analyzed by quantifying malondialdehyde production rate. It may be inferred that feeding LO to broiler chicks’ produces n-3 FA enriched chicken meat but the effect of natural antioxidants like curry leaf, ginger and turmeric powder on meat lipid peroxidation could not be established through the present study.

A total of 96 Shaver 579 laying hens of 78 weeks of age were studied for the effects on egg production of dietary supplementation with spirulina (Spirulina platensis). The hens were divided into four dietary treatments with six replications of four birds in each group. Birds of three groups were supplemented with 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% spirulina and one group was kept as control. Yolk colour significantly improved (P<0.01) as compared to control, without affecting any other production performances. It is suggested that dietary supplementation of spirulina at 0.2 to 0.3% levels in aged laying hens enhanced egg yolk colour. Bangl. vet. 2017. Vol. 34, No. 2, 71-78
