This paper studies the compound effect of liquid medium and laser on the workpiece and analyses the law of material surface temperature change during the processing. Taking 7075-T6 aluminum alloy as the research object, the surface temperature field of aluminum alloy processed using water-jet-assisted laser machining under different process parameters was simulated using finite element software. In addition, the temperature field of the material surface was detected in real-time using the self-built water-jet-assisted laser machining temperature field detection system, and the processing results were observed and verified using an optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and energy spectrum analyzer. The results show that when the water jet inflow angle is 45°, the heat-affected area of the material surface is the smallest, and the cooling effect of the temperature field of the material surface is better. Considering the liquidus melting point of 7075 aluminum alloys, it is concluded that the processing effect is better when the water jet velocity is 14 m·s−1, the laser power is 100 W, and the laser scanning speed is 1.2 mm·s−1. At this time, the quality of the tank is relatively good, there are no cracks in the bottom of the tank, and there is less slag accumulation. Compared with anhydrous laser etching, water-jet-assisted laser etching can reduce the problems of micro-cracks, molten slag, and the formation of a recast layer in laser etching and improve the quality of the workpiece, and the composition of the bottom slag does not change. This study provides theoretical guidance and application support for the selection and optimization of process parameters for water-jet-assisted laser etching of aluminum alloy and further enriches the heat transfer mechanism of multi-field coupling in the process of water-jet-assisted laser machining.

The hydroforming process of the aluminum alloy panel was simulated by the software DYNAFORM. The effects of process parameters (blank holder force, depth of panel and height of draw bead) on springback of the aluminum alloy were investigated. The max springback of the panel was analyzed by weighted scoring method. Then the process parameters were synthetically optimized for the max positive and negative springback. The results showed that the height of draw bead affects obviously the comprehensive springback of the panel. The optimization of the process parameters obtained by the orthogonal experiment can effectively reduce the max springback of the panel.

This chapter presents the friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminum alloy AA-5083-O using vertical milling machine. In present FSW experimentation, effects of different process parameter namely tool rotation speed, welding speed, tool geometry, and tool shoulder diameter have been determined on welding quality of two pieces of AA-5083-O using response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal sets of process parameters have been determined for weld quality characteristics namely tensile strength (UTS) and percentage elongation (%EL). In present experimentations, a specially designed tool made of high carbon steel with different shoulder diameters (15mm, 17.5mm, and 20 mm) having constant pin length (6 mm) were used for FSW of two pieces of aluminum alloy. The ANOVA and pooled ANOVA were used to study the effect of FSW parameters on UTS and %EL. Multi response optimization has been carried out using desirability function in conjunction with RSM to obtain the optimal setting of process parameters for higher UTS and lower %EL.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of laser surface transformation hardening (LSTH) of 4340 steel spur gears using regression analysis. The experimental work is focused on the effects of various LSTH parameters on the hardness profile shape and the hardened depth variation. The investigations are based on a structured design of experiments and improved statistical analysis tools. The experimentations are carried out on AISI 4340 steel spur gears using a commercial 3 kW Nd:YAG laser system. Laser power, scanning speed, and rotation speed are used as process parameters to evaluate the variation of the hardened depth and to identify the possible relationship between the process parameters and the hardened zone physical and geometrical characteristics. Based on the experimental data and analysis of variance, the direct and interactive contributions of the process parameters on the variation of the hardness profile shape and the hardened depth are analyzed. The main effects and the interaction effects are also evaluated. The results reveal that all the process parameters are relevant. The cumulative contribution of the three parameters in the hardened depth variation represents more than 80% with a clear predominance of laser power. The contribution of the interactions between the parameters represents 12% to 16%. The resulting hardness values are relatively similar for all the experimental tests with about 60 HRC. The evaluation of the produced regression models for hardened depth prediction shows limited performance suggesting that the predictive modeling process can be improved.

PurposeThe objective of the paper is to evaluate the fabrication process and to study the influence of process parameters of friction stir processing of 6061-TiB2-Al2O3 Aluminum alloy surface composite on microhardness tensile strength, and microstructure.Design/methodology/approachFriction stir processing method is used for attaining the desired mechanical properties, and selectively processed reinforcements to fabricate the samples. The Taguchi technique was used to optimize rotational speed, travel speed and volume percentage of reinforcement particles to enhance the mechanical properties of 6061-TiB2-Al2O3 Aluminum alloy composite.FindingsThe fabrication of surface composites through FSP allows new inventions in terms of material with enhanced surface layers without changing the base metal.Practical implicationsTo examine the behavior of the surface of the composites in the different zones, the practical implication consists of the use of different characterization techniques like optical microscopy and scanning microscopy for microstructural behavior and the measurement of hardness and tensile tests for mechanical behavior.Originality/valueThe research work consists of tool design and process parameters, which can affect the final product (microstructural changes), and the performance of the modified surface layer behavior was studied and presented.
