The present paper intends to address the impact of COVID-19 crisis upon the consumer buying behavior of fresh vegetables directly from local producers as observed 30 days later, after enforcing the state of emergency in Romania within a well-defined area, namely, the quarantined area of Suceava. The study relies on the interpretation of answers received from the quarantined area (N = 257) to a questionnaire applied online nationwide. The starting point of this paper is the analysis of the sociodemographic factors on the purchasing decision of fresh vegetables directly from local producers before declaring the state of emergency in Romania (16 March 2020). Further research has been conducted by interpreting the changes triggered by the COVID-19 crisis on the purchasing intention of such products before and after the end of the respective crisis. The aim of this scientific investigation relies on identifying the methods by which these behavioral changes can influence the digital transformation of short food supply chains.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus and closing the state borders across the world led to the mass return of the citizens of Serbia immediately before and after the declaration of the state of emergency in March 2020. The measure of placing under health supervision and the obligation of self-isolation, were the key means of mobility management in the situation of the health crisis in Serbia. How were the given measures implemented? How did they affect the citizens who returned to the country? What resources did they have at their disposal and in what way did they meet their basic needs during self-isolation? How was their experience of self-isolation shaped by public media perceptions of diaspora by representatives of the authorities and by their own social environment during the state of emergency? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions relying on the results of the online survey of 305 returnees, conducted during April and May 2020 by the researchers from the Institute for Sociological Research of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.

BACKGROUND Serious public health problems, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can cause an infodemic. Sources of information that may cause an infodemic include Internet searches and social networking services; YouTube, which consists of content created and uploaded by individuals, is one such source. OBJECTIVE To survey the relationship between YouTube regarding COVID-19 and Internet searches in Japan. METHODS We used Google Trends to survey the relationship between YouTube regarding COVID-19 and Internet searches in Japan. YouTube searches were performed on March 6, 2020 (before the state of emergency), April 14 (during the state of emergency), and May 27 (after the state of emergency was lifted), with 136, 113, and 140 sample videos evaluated, respectively. The Google Trends search was conducted from January 22nd to May 23rd, 2020. The main outcome measures were: (1) The characteristics of each video and (2) uploaded video and Google Trends. RESULTS Of the videos evaluated over the three periods, the total number of videos after removing duplicates was 331. Content related to COVID-19 was present in 23.3% of videos, content related to preventing the spread of infection in 20.5%, content related to treatment in 2.1%, and the other category represented 54.1% of videos. Only 9.1% of the videos were uploaded by healthcare professionals. In the periods before and after the state of emergency, with 7 April as the point of reference, there were 2.9 per day and 2.4 per day uploads before and after the state of emergency, respectively. Regarding Google Trends, before and after the state of emergency, there were 29.5 per day and 54.9 per day total searches, respectively. There were more videos of content related to COVID-19 in March than in April or May (p = .03, p = .03). CONCLUSIONS The information on COVID-19 did not indicate a relationship between the number of YouTube uploads and the number of Internet searches. Most of the videos on COVID-19 were created and uploaded by individuals. Therefore, people need to take great care when obtaining information from YouTube before or early in a pandemic, during which time scientific evidence is scarce.

Objective. To identify the number of haemodialysis patients with diabetes in a large NHS Trust, their current glycaemic control, and the impact on other renal specific outcomes.Design. Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study.Methods. Data was collected from an electronic patient management system. Glycaemic control was assessed from HbA1c results that were then further adjusted for albumin (Alb) and haemoglobin (Hb). Interdialytic weight gains were analysed from weights recorded before and after dialysis, 2 weeks before and after the most recent HbA1c date. Amputations were identified from electronic records.Results. 39% of patients had poor glycaemic control (HbA1c > 8%). Adjusted HbA1c resulted in a greater number of patients with poor control (55%). Significant correlations were found with interdialytic weight gains (P<0.02,r=0.14), predialysis sodium (P<0.0001,r=-1.9), and predialysis bicarbonate (P<0.02,r=0.12). Trends were observed with albumin and C-reactive protein. Patients with diabetes had more amputations (24 versus 2).Conclusion. Large number of diabetic patients on haemdialysis have poor glycaemic control. This may lead to higher interdialytic weight gains, larger sodium and bicarbonate shifts, increased number of amputations, and possibly increased inflammation and decreased nutritional status. Comprehensive guidelines and more accurate long-term tests for glycaemic control are needed.

Abstract COVID-19 pandemic poses problems that not only concern the economy but also the health of people all over the world. In Japan, despite the declaration of a “state of emergency”, no lockdown was implemented, and a request for self-restraint and avoidance of non-essential trips was instead issued. After a month, the state of emergency was lifted. Because patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) were forced to stay during the state of emergency, resulting in a lack of physical activity, concerns about their glycemic control were raised. Therefore, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels during different time periods were compared (May 2018, March 2019, June 2019, July 2019, May 2019, March 2020, June 2020, July 2020). We analyzed 165 patients with DM. The mean age of subjects was 67.8 + 11.5 years. Male comprised 67.3% of the participants. The mean body weight was 65.6 + 14.6 kg on July 2019 and 66.1 + 15.2 kg on July 2020. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 24.4 + 3.6 kg/m2 on July 2019 and 24.4 + 3.6 on July 2020. Patients with Type 2 DM (T2DM) comprised 90% of the participants, while the rest had T1DM. Mean duration of DM was 12.0 + 7.4 years. In order to assess the effect of the self-restraint on plasma glucose control, HbA1c levels during these periods were compared: May 2018, March 2019, June 2019, July 2019 (one year before COVID-19 pandemic.), and May 2019, March 2020, June 2020, July 2020 (The last three months during COVID-19). March 2020 is corresponded to a period before the request for self-restraint, while June and July 2020 corresponded to the periods right after the end of self-restraint. We also compared HbA1c levels between May 2019 and July 2020 using the Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) to assess whether SMBG affected plasma glucose control during the period of self-restraint. HbA1c levels in May 2018, March 2019, June 2019, July 2019, May 2019, March 2020, June 2020, July 2020, were 7.32 + 1.23, 7.44 + 1.20, 7.16 + 1.06, 7.01 + 1.05, 7.23 + 1.06, 7.45 + 1.18, 7.15 + 10.7, and 7.11 + 1.17, respectively. Similarly, HbA1c levels between May 2019 without SMBG and May 2019 with SMBG were not statistically different. In this clinical study, we found that the request to avoid non-essential trips as a form of self-restraint during the country’s state of emergency did not affect plasma glucose control of patients with DM. We noted that the patients did not have signs of insulin resistance as their BMI on July 2019 and July 2020 were 24.4 + 3.6 and 24.4 + 3.6, respectively. Unexpectedly, the HbA1c levels were not affected by the absence or presence of SMBG. This could explain why HbA1c levels were not elevated, despite a temporarily sedentary lifestyle and a lack of exercise for a month. In addition, due to the self-restraint, the frequency of dining outside the house decreased, which could have contributed to the non-elevation of HbA1c levels.

AbstractEstimating the percentages of undiagnosed and asymptomatic patients is essential for controlling the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, and for assessing any strategy for controlling the disease. In this paper, we propose a novel analysis based on the birth-death process with recursive full tracing. We estimated the numbers of undiagnosed symptomatic patients and total infected individuals per diagnosed patient before and after the declaration of the state of emergency in Hokkaido, Japan. The median of the estimated number of undiagnosed symptomatic patients per diagnosed patient decreased from 1.9 to 0.77 after the declaration, and the median of the estimated number of total infected individuals per diagnosed patient decreased from 4.7 to 2.4. We will discuss the limitations and possible expansions of the model.

This essay explores the discourse of law that constitutes the controversial apprehension of Cicero's issuing of the ultimate decree of the Senate (senatus consultum ultimum) in Catiline. The play juxtaposes the struggle of Cicero, whose moral character and legitimacy are at stake in regards to the extra-legal uses of espionage, with the supposedly mischievous Catilinarians who appear to observe legal procedures more carefully throughout their plot. To mitigate this ambivalence, the play defends Cicero's actions by depicting the way in which Cicero establishes the rhetoric of public counsel to convince the citizens of his legitimacy in his unprecedented dealing with Catiline. To understand the contemporaneousness of Catiline, I will explore the way the play integrates the early modern discourses of counsel and the legal maxim of ‘better to suffer an inconvenience than mischief,’ suggesting Jonson's subtle sensibility towards King James's legal reformation which aimed to establish and deploy monarchical authority in the state of emergency (such as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605). The play's climactic trial scene highlights the display of the collected evidence, such as hand-written letters and the testimonies obtained through Cicero's spies, the Allbroges, as proof of Catiline's mischievous character. I argue that the tactical negotiating skills of the virtuous and vicious characters rely heavily on the effective use of rhetoric exemplified by both the political discourse of classical Rome and the legal discourse of Tudor and Jacobean England.
