The availability of thin titanium film laser modification for precise loss control in lithium niobate optical waveguides was demonstrated. A simple ray model of the interaction between a nanosized metal cover on the top surface of a Ti-indiffused channel waveguide and orthogonal optical waveguide modes with changes in optical losses up to 0.95 and 1.05 dB/mm for TE- and TM-polarized modes respectively in case of 5 nm titanium film covering was suggested. The consistency between obtained theoretical losses and results of optical film modification by a 976 nm laser beam with the threshold intensity up to 1 kW/mm2 was demonstrated. The suggested method was applied for precise balance of optical field intensities in arms of Mach-Zehnder optical modulator; an associated increase of the extinction ratio from 30 to 48 dB was achieved.

In this work, the self-assembled monolayers of γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane and octadecyltrichlorosilane were prepared on titanium films, radiated and solidified by ultraviolet radiation/ozone photochemical process. The characterization and friction properties of titanium film, APS SAMs, OTS SAMs and the radiated APS SAMs, OTS SAMs were explored by atomic force microscopy and friction force microscopy. The effects of functional groups, sliding velocity, load and ultraviolet radiation/ozone photochemical process on friction properties of SAMs were analyzed. The experimental results show that the titanium film coated with SAMs, especially under ultraviolet radiation/ozone, is exhibited with a good friction property. The friction property of APS SAMs is better than OTS SAMs under or no ultraviolet radiation/ozone. The friction force increases with the increasing of sliding velocity and decreases with the increasing of load.

The well-controlled nitrogen doped graphite with graphitic nitrogen located in the zigzag edge and/or vacancy sites can be realized using the low energy nitrogen sputtering. The doping mechanism of nitrogen ions is also discussed.

This paper presents the results of observation of sputtering of neutral molecules and ions from the crystal adenine surface induced by fourth-harmonic Nd:YAG laser radiation with a pulse duration of 30 ps. The energy fluence of laser pulses was in the region (1–3) × 10−4 J/cm2. The kinetic energy distribution of the sputtered molecules spreads up to 0.7 eV. The experiment shows that the threshold of adenine molecular ion sputtering is connected with absorbed energy density in upper layers of the crystal surface but not by laser radiation intensity.
