In this paper a regulation of the terminal voltage of synchronous generator (SG) has been developed. Here, the nonlinear model of the SG is used directly without requirement for a linearized mathematical model of the generator. A proportional integral PI-controller is used to adjust the duty cycle of the DC chopper of step-down type for controlling the field voltage and consequently the output voltage of the generator. Furthermore, Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed as an optimization technique for tuning the optimal parameters of the PI controller (Kp and Ki). This is achieved by the minimization of the quadratic output error between the reference voltage and the output voltage calculated from the adopted model at the same time. In order to test the performance of the PSO-PI controller, results are compared with the genetic algorithm (GA). Moreover, to reduce the overshoot resulting in the response of the terminal voltage, a varied reference voltage is adopted. Results obtained show the superiority of the varied reference voltage to decrease the overshoot versus the fixed reference voltage.

A method for optimizing the parameters of a modular half-speed synchronous generator with permanent magnets (PMSG) and the generator voltage control system with a neural network-based algorithm are proposed. The basic design scheme of the modular half-speed PMSG is considered, which features a compact layout of the generator main parts, thereby ensuring the optimal use of the working volume, smaller sizes of the magnetic system, and smaller mass of the active materials used in manufacturing the machine. Owing to the simple and reliable design of the generator, its output parameters can be varied in a wide range with using standard electrical circuits for voltage stabilization and current rectification along with an additional voltage regulation unit. Owing to this feature, the design scheme of the considered generator has essential advantages over the existing analogs with a common cylindrical magnetic core. In view of these circumstances, the development of a high-efficient modular half-speed PMSG as an autonomous DC power source is of both scientific and practical interest; this generator can be used to supply power to a large range of electricity consumers located in rural areas, low-rise residential areas, military communities, allotments etc. In solving the problem of optimizing the generator’s magnetic system, the main electrical machine analysis equation is obtained. The optimal ratios of the winding wire mass to the mass of permanent magnets and of the PM height to the air gap value for achieving the maximum specific useful power output have been determined. An analytical correlation between the optimal design parameters of a half-speed modular PMSG and its power performance parameters has been established. The expediency to develop a neural network-based control system is shown. The number of load-bearing modules of the half-speed PMSG is determined depending on the wind velocity, load factor and the required output voltage. The neural network was trained on the examples of a training sample using a laboratory test bench. The neural network was implemented in the MatLab 2019b environment by constructing a synchronous generator simulation model in the Simulink software extension. The possibility of using the voltage control system of a half-speed modular PMSG with a microcontroller for operation of the neural network platform of the Arduino family (ArduinoDue) independently of the PC is shown.

Abstract The variable-speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) attracts the maximum power from wind, but voltage-regulation and frequency-control of the system in standalone operation is a challenging task A modern-control-based-tracking of power from wind for its best utilization is proposed in this paper for standalone PMSG based hybrid-WECS comprising Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). An Adaptive Synchronous Reference Frame Phase-Locked-Loop (SRF-PLL) based control scheme for load side bi-directional voltage source converter (VSC) is presented for the system. MATLAB/Simulink model is developed for simulation study for the proposed system and the effectiveness of the controller for bi-directional-converter is discussed under different operating conditions: like variable wind-velocity, sudden load variation, and load unbalancing. Converter control scheme enhances the power smoothening, supply-load power-matching. Also it is able to regulate the active & reactive power from PMSG-BESS hybrid system with control of fluctuations in voltage & frequency with respect to varying operating conditions. Proposed controller successfully offers reactive-power-compensation, harmonics-reduction, and power-balancing. The proposed scheme is based on proportional & integral (PI) controller. Also system is experimentally validated in the laboratory-environment and results are presented here.

The conventional droop control is a widely-used technique in load sharing among Distributed Generator (DG) units in islanded DC Microgrids (MGs). This method provides Plug-and-Play (PnP) capability for DG units; however, poor load sharing accuracy and unregulated voltage are two shortcomings of that. This article proposes a novel control system in islanded DC MGs to provide simultaneous regulated voltage and accurate load sharing. The method utilizes a modified droop control technique in a decentralized manner. The proposed control system injects a superimposed AC voltage to the network that carries a frequency proportional to the master DG unit output current. The injected voltage adjusts an added a term to the conventional droop control named as the voltage compensation term in order to cancel voltage changes. This term adjusts terminal voltage of DG units proportional to the frequency of the superimposed AC voltage. The performance of the proposed control system is validated via a set of simulation studies using PLECS, and the experimental results confirm the viability and feasibility of the proposed control system.

For the proper operation of electrical equipment, it is important to have input voltage within permissible range (230V±5%). The input voltage supplied by the utility is generated by alternators. It is a well-known fact that the alternator terminal voltage decreases with an increase in load. In order to meet the consumer’s requirement, one needs to regulate the voltage of an alternator. This paper proposes the manner in which the design of the alternator can be modified to minimize the voltage regulation of an alternator.

Self-Excited Induction Generator (SEIG) offers many advantages such as low cost, simplicity, robust construction, self-protection against faults and maintenance free in today's renewable energy industry. However, the SEIG demands an external supply of reactive power to maintain the constant terminal voltage under the varying loading conditions, which limits the application of SEIG as a standalone power generator. The regulation of speed and voltage does not result in a satisfactory improvement although several studies have been emphasized on this topic in the past. To improve the performance of the SEIG system in isolated areas and to regulate the terminal voltage STATic COMpensator (STATCOM) has been modelled and developed in this dissertation. The STATCOM consists of AC inductors, a DC bus capacitor and solid-state self-commutating devices. The ratings of these components are quite important for designing and controlling of STATCOM to maintain the constant terminal voltage. The proposed generating system is modelled and simulated in MATLAB along with Simulink and sim power system block set toolboxes. The simulated results are presented to demonstrate the capability of an isolated power generating system for feeding three-phase resistive loads.
