The planning and decision-making for a distributed energy supply concept in complex actor structures like in districts calls for the approach to be highly structured. Here, a strategy with strong use of energetic simulations is developed, the core elements are presented, and research gaps are identified. The exemplary implementation is shown using the case study of a new district on the former Oldenburg airbase in northwestern Germany. The process is divided into four consecutive phases, which are carried out with different stakeholder participation and use of different simulation tools. Based on a common objective, a superstructure of the applicable technologies is developed. Detailed planning is then carried out with the help of a multi-objective optimal sizing algorithm and Monte Carlo based risk assessment. The process ends with the operating phase, which is to guarantee a further optimal and dynamic mode of operation. The main objective of this publication is to present the core elements of the planning processes and decision-making framework based on the case study and to find and identify research gaps that will have to be addressed in the future.

Purpose Research has shown that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) often fail to appreciate that in their market, donors represent clients. Moreover, the unstable income characteristics of NGOs emphasize the importance of conducting market analysis specific to such organizations. The purpose of this paper is to identify key factors that influence fundraising success for mental health NGOs and determine the most advantageous fundraising approach based on a mixed-methods study that encompass a literature review, two surveys and a case study. Design/methodology/approach Based on a structured literature review, the most important factors affecting NGO fundraising are unified into a decision-making framework. This framework is tested using a triangulation approach by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The former based on a general survey and the latter based on a case study. Findings The results highlight 15 key factors determining the optimal approach for mental health NGOs when fundraising in Denmark. Practical implications The decision-making framework can be used to assess the most advantageous fundraising approach based on a variety of internal and external circumstances. Originality/value While private firms develop exhaustive market analyses, NGOs often lack analyses to cope with fluctuating environments and changing customer needs. This paper addresses this gap by identifying key factors that determine an optimal fundraising approach and proposes a novel decision-making framework for practitioners.

Abstract Intelligent load scheduling is an emerging approach that has the potential to facilitate extreme sustainable data center (DC) operation. However, scarcity of straightforward tools in the public domain challenges decision makers performing quantitative analysis of the DC load planning and its potential benefits. In this work, a novel integrated decision-making framework was developed to address this issue, which provides the basis for the multi-objective optimization of carbon-, water-, and economic-intelligent load scheduling. The proposed framework was demonstrated with a case study DC in California, which showed the usefulness of the proposed framework in informing sustainable DC operations.

This paper presents a framework based on multi-objective optimization that can be used to generate and analyze the most desirable transportation investment options based on their objectives and constraints. The framework, which is based on the surrogate worth trade-off analysis, could be applied to both discrete or continuous decision-problem scenarios. In a discrete problem, a pre-defined set of alternatives is available, whereas continuous problems are not characterized by a pre-defined set of alternatives. This framework was applied with the data generated for a Capital Beltway Corridor investment study. The multi-objective decision-making framework was found to be adaptable to this typical investment case study.
