AbstractPhotoresistant laser dyes were trapped in silica based xerogel host matrices to obtain solid state tunable lasers. For this purpose very dense xerogel samples with improved chemical and physical properties were prepared at room temperature by the sol-gel technology. The as-prepared materials were polished to obtain optical quality surfaces and were used as new lasing media.Lasing action of such different dyes as rhodamine, perylene and pyrromethene doping dense sol-gel matrices was demonstrated. Efficiencies of 30 % or lifetimes of more than 100,000 shots were achieved with different new ≤dye dopant/host matrix≥ couples. Their different performances are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract Cerium oxide (ceria) contains two stable states of cerium ions (Ce3+ and Ce4+). The presence of these two states and the ability to swap from one state to another (Ce3+ ↔ Ce4+) by scavenging the highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from radiolysis of water, ensure the enhanced stability of polysulfone (Psf) membranes in the γ-radiation environment. In this study, the ROS scavenging ability of ceria was studied. Ceria nanoparticles were found to scavenge ROS like hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The H2O2 scavenging is due to the peroxidase-like catalytic activity of ceria nanoparticles. The ROS scavenging is responsible for offering protection to the Psf host matrix and in turn the stability to the Psf-ceria mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) in γ-radiation environment. Thus, presence of ceria nanoparticles provides an opportunity for utilizing Psf-ceria MMMs in ionizing radiation environment with increased life span, without compromise in the performance.

AbstractTitanium carbosulfide (Ti2CS) is frequently found as an inclusion phase in Ti - containing steels. It is of considerable interest because, whenever present in preference to the more common manganese sulfide (MnS), it significantly improves the toughness (a very desirable property) of the steel. Currently, to the best of our knowledge, there is no data, either computational or experimental, regarding the structural properties of Ti2CS. This data is needed to understand the influence of the Ti2CS inclusions on the toughness of the host material. In this paper, our results from the ab-initio calculations, using the LKKR-ASA (Layer Korringa Kohn Rostoker method in the Atomic Spheres Approximation) on the equilibrium ground state properties of bulk Ti2CS are presented and discussed. In particular, attention is focused upon (a) the Energy – Atomic Volume curve generated to calculate the equilibrium lattice constant and the bulk modulus, and (b) the density of states calculations. The application of these results to the subsequent study of an interface involving the carbosulfide and the host matrix is also illustrated.

The synthesis and characterisation of 2,5-bis(5′-hexyl-[2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)pyridine (Th4PY) and its use as a blue emitter in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reported. Th4PY was synthesised in high yield using a straightforward Suzuki coupling route with commercially available starting materials. As Th4PY is both soluble and has low molecular weight, blue OLEDs were fabricated using both spin-coating and vacuum deposition thin film processing techniques to study the effect of processing on device performance. OLED devices using a spin-coated layer consisting of 4′,4′′-tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine (TCTA) and 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) as a host matrix together with Th4PY as emitter exhibited highly efficient sky-blue emission with a low turn-on voltage of 3 V, a maximum brightness close to 15000 cd m–2 at 8 V, and a maximum luminous efficiency of 7.4 cd A–1 (6.3 lm W–1) with CIE coordinates of x = 0.212, y = 0.320. The device performance characteristics are compared using various matrices and processing techniques. The promising sky-blue OLED performance, solution processability, and ambient stability make Th4PY a promising blue emitter for application in OLEDs.

Novel proton conducting nanocomposite membranes included binary and ternary mixtures of acid modified nanotitania particles particles with polymers such as poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA),pol (vinyl phosphonic acid), sulfonated polysulfone (SPSU) and poly (1-vinyl 1,2,4-triazole) (PVTri) . The interaction of functional nanoparticles with the host matrix were searched by FT-IR spectroscopy. The homogeneous distribution of functional nanoparticles in the membranes was confirmed by SEM micrographs. The spectroscopic measurements and water/methanol uptake studies suggested a complexation between polymers and sulphonic acid that inhibited the leaching out of acidic units. The TGA results verified that the presence of modified nanoparticles in the composite membranes the thermel stability of the membranes enhanced up to above 200 °C.

AbstractWe report on strong Er3+ luminescence in the visible and infra-red regions at room temperature in amorphous GaN:Er thin films prepared by DC magnetron co-sputtering. The intensity of the Er3+ luminescence at 1.535 μm corresponding to 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transitions is greatly enhanced after annealing at 750°C. In this material GaN crystallites have formed and embedded in the continuous amorphous matrix. The crystallites are 4 to 7 nm in diameter as analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The absorption edge, extending three orders of magnitude in absorption coefficient in the spectral range from 0.5 to 3.5 eV, is superimposed on resonant absorption bands of Er3+ ions. The total photoluminescence spectrum consists of welldefined Er3+ luminescence peaks imposed on a broad band edge luminescence from the amorphous GaN host matrix.
